3/13/11 update!

DEVELOPMENT: Michael Graham (involved in A Hero's Tail, Shadow Legacy, and the Legend of Spyro) is confirmed to be working on the game as a associate producer. It's unknown if he's working either with Toys for Bob, or Activision Publishing.
DEVELOPMENT: It is noted that Activision will release the rest of the playable characters (may or may not packaged in one of the two packs) will be periodically after the game hits stores from then to 2012. Who ever thought Activision is going to release all 32 characters in one package when the game releases?
PLAYABLE CHARACTERS: Corrected 2 character identification errors; pointed out by Aura24, and riverhippo respectively. As of now, there are 18 characters revealed, only 5 have the full bio.
PLAYABLE CHARACTERS: Expanded the character appearance images! In order: figurine, game screenshot, promotional art, and concept art. It took a lot of work gathering images but it's worth it
PLAYABLE CHARACTERS: Also updated some of the older ones such as the Ignitor, Gill Grunt, and Prism Break figurine.
OTHER CHARACTERS: Huh? A new section you say? When the first details of the game have been revealed, a bunch of us have been scattering for the new Spyro info in that short period of time. We overlooked one thing, and here is this: there's a concept art of a dragon character - it is unknown if it is a playable character, or not.
REFERENCES: Added three source links - two of them preview articles (Palgn, and BuzzFocus), and a video (The Quarter Bin).

yeah, I believe it's time to consider possibilities that there are on-playable characters that are to like about the new game.

Elora and Hunter in Spyro 2, the four dragon elders in LoS, and Ember and Flame are perfect examples of characters that really aren't playable, yet they are loved by the Spyro community. (I don't consider Ember and Flame playable, they're just bonus game mods, really)

Maybe a reveal about Ignitus, Cynder, maybe even new characters, and others as non-playable characters will put an end to people complaining about the lackluster quality of the current revealed characters.

Also, Legend of Spyro characters + Skylanders characters = Mood whiplash. The original characters (Hunter, Elora, Bianca, Sgt. Byrd) would work better.

Honestly, I don't think I have enough character expertise to predict the limitations of which characters could work in Skylanders, it's possible they could make anything work. As as far as the mood whiplash, it really only applies to people who reject this game for all it's worth.

No, I mean Legend of Spyro was much darker and plot-heavier than Skylanders, so characters like Cynder or Malefor would be out of place in the Skylanders world.

LoS was a little dark. But the characters themselves aren't really that dark. We know that SSA Spyro is 'based' on the old Spyro. But it wouldn't suprise me to find a few LoS elements in his character. Just like when they redid Hunter.

It's very possible that as Skylanders becomes the new wave of Spyro' gaming, LoS will gain a touch of credibility. To new negative previews of the next Spyro game, it allows previous games to be more liked, or in the words of those haters: "LoS wasn't so bad after all."

Yeah, but from what I can tell the only people who hate this game are fans of previous Spyro games. Most of the previews and reviews have been positive.

3/27/11 update!

DEVELOPMENT: I will confirm that Micheal Graham works in Activision Publishing, not Toys for Bob. Since Sierra Entertainment (former property of Universal/Vivendi) merged with Activision Blizzard (under ownership of Vivendi, a French multi-industry company with a 52% stake as the biggest stockholder), it would make a lot of sense.
DEVELOPMENT: Added info regarding Ignited's involvement with setting up the Activision Booth, along with links containing images.
PLAYABLE CHARACTERS: XSparxX has showed me an image of the scan of the preview of the game from the NZone German magazine of the dragon sketches, confirming that the pencil sketch was indeed the earliest design of Spyro; and thus the "Other Characters" section has been kaboomed. I really want to add a reference link, but the image was deleted. Fortunately, by seeing this by myself, I can confirm this.
REFERENCES: Added - one image gallery page (IgnitedUSA), and two of them videos (Atamaii.com, IgnitedUSA).

I feel like sharing this info of what XSparxX told me when I asked if there's a bit more info for the preview of the game from that German NZone magazine. When I asked for the additional scans, XSparxX did not respond back. Here is what the user told me:

Activision commissioned Workshop Events to design and produce the Australian launch of Activisions’ innovative new game -Skylanders Spyro’s Adventures.

Globally, the game has been deemed a breakthrough in entertainment for the toy and video game industries and ultimately involves a new collection of characters, an engaging storyline and an immersive interactive experience. Activision, eager to bring the experience of the game to media and retail partners alike wished to create an event that would bring the characters and world to life.

As if stepping through a monitor or console, guests entered the building via a custom built screen-like facade at the entrance and were thrust into a world of black. Moving up the stairs and to the landing, creeping ivy adorning the stairwell barricade, stepping stones over a blue river, and ivy covered walls led them across a drawbridge and into the world of Skyland.

Entering Luna Park's Ted Hopkins Room guestswere greeted by soft, low lying fog, clusters of giant white balloons with cloud effect projections, creating the illusion of floating through the clouds. Beautiful topiary trees positioned around the room alluded to the sensation of flying over a forest.

The stage set and rear projection screen were positioned towards the front of the room, set against an expansive printed fabric backdrop of blue sky and clouds and framed with the tops of the Skylanders’ stone wall castle. Ghost chairs and white organza ceiling swags added to the magic of the space.
