Re: Skylanders was originally going to be a darker Spyro Game

With Activision at the helm, who knows what the future holds for Spyro. I personally would like the story from LoS to continue but a mature rating is too far. Blood and heavy violence just isnt Spyro. However, I could see a scene potentially where Spyro sacrifices himself for Cynder then goes into a purgatoryish state, kinda like what happens after Voldemort kills Harry Potter in Deathly Hallows. Then Spyro comes back and saves the day again

Re: Skylanders was originally going to be a darker Spyro Game

even though i feel like anything would be better than todays skylanders i am interested in seeing what they would have done to spyro in a more mature sense. I wonder if we could find some of that concept art! that would be really cool if someone could find that!

People who care about Harry Potter still haven't read the last book? How? XD

Anyway, I don't think that would be a good idea; I'd rather them do something original for once.

Re: Skylanders was originally going to be a darker Spyro Game

If you ask me, there are A) games that a dark feeling works for, B ) games that a cartoony playful feel works for, and C) games that can survive a nice mix. Spyro fits under options A) and C). I'm a bit biased here, not having played the TLoS games, but I just do not see that as Spyro, it feels like it takes itself a bit too seriously, and like I said, that works for some games, I just don't see it working for Spyro. Skylanders seems like it fits into option C), which is nice.

Classic had at few times dark themes, like tearing off wings off baby dragons.

And some characters died (mostly villains, but still...). The difference is Classic Spyro also had cartoony stuff in it, whereas Legend of Spyro was mostly dark. Skylanders has an E10 rating, so we'll see how dark it is (although it doesn't look too dark so far).

Re: Skylanders was originally going to be a darker Spyro Game

LoS wasnt really that dark, it was just more dramatic.

It was dark in comparison to Classic Spyro.

Re: Skylanders was originally going to be a darker Spyro Game

Created a blasted profile so i could post this here.

Anyway, i think that a mature Spyro game ( prefferably a LoS Sequel ) would be great.  Spyro is a part of my childhood and i want my memories to grow old with and mature with me.

I don't necessarily mean that it should have gore, swearing, or, Odin forbid, M rated material o_O , but mature characters and a well developed story.

Things that also come to mind, is actual GOOD humor by Sparx, not stupid, gut churning comic relief and inventive and wondorous enviroments and briliantly designed enemies.

I found the enviroments in TLoS:DotD to be mostly well made, but not really well named, and i hold much scorn for The Burned Lands which only confirmed my suspicions that every snigle person that worked on the team read The Lord of the Rings as they had no immagination.

Sparx was pretty cool in ANB. His personality was ruined in TEN and DOTD, imo.

Imo, LOS didn't quite work out as well as I'd hoped. There was so much potential that was left uncovered. If that was the best that Sierra/Activision could do, I guess this is for the best.
I like the LOS games but basically:

-ANB had great charm to it but clunky gameplay. Didn't mind the repitition at all.
-TEN was more challenging but some of the original charm of ANB was gone.
-DOTD had great gameplay but the charm which I loved in ANB was all gone.

that every snigle person that worked on the team read The Lord of the Rings as they had no immagination.

I can't say they had no imagination. Developers had to rush Dotd so they took the nearest inspiration and built it from there. Trust me, I'm a game modder and I know why they did it.

True. David Spade really was a good choice, but his voice was... well..... flat.  There really weren't any emotions, but i guess that's his deal, and i think he's great.  When i was younger, Sparx cracked me up. Now? Nope.

In DotD, Sparx was a disaster.  Horrible acting and just obnoxious and annoying.

If a T Rated Spyro game were to come out, at least they should make Sparx in to a worthwhile character who actually makes you laugh, and not make you facepalm like you just watched a Dane Cook or Carlos Mencia skit. Imagine Stephen Colbert as Sparx, that's what im talking about.

Honestly, the voice acting wasn't co-ordinated properly in ETD or in the LOS games. AHT was praised for "great voice acting" though.

Like Daxter in Jak & Daxter? That'd be great. smile
But I miss Sparx and him not appearing in this game was a bit disappointing. To think that Sparx has featured in all 13 Spyro games, including handheld and console, and now he disappeared. He shall come back one day, I hope.

Yeah, or like Rachet and Clank smile

In detail, this is what i have in mind.  I would love it to take place in the LoS world, due to the abaundance of characters, and the fact that it is a more mature Spyro game. Also, im a sucker for high fantasy, and the world of LoS hit the mark for me. I fell in love with it's tangibility and the prospect of another unexplored world in which a new Spyro universe can thrive.

A mature, well crafted story.  Inspired by the utter *bleep* i have for The Legacy of Kain series, it would be really great if it had a great story.  It doesn't have to be completely original, just well crafted and interesting, and it would be great if it made you think about something (life, death, love etc.). Also, to be frank, in my spare time i had some fun so i crafted a possible screenplay or something, i may use it for a story of my own.

The story could be both dark and uplifting, but bottom line, mature.

Well designed enemies and enviroments.  The enemies in LoS were good, but still could have used more varied ones.  As for enviroments.  I want something ALIEN. This is a different world we are talking about. We need something mesmrizing, surreal and magnificent. Sea shores that glow like diamonds, mountains that swirl in to impossible proportions, strange creatures etc., and maybe some reamed locations from the original trilogy. And, as i said, if they are going to create a place where the main villian resides, don't turn it in to a word for word copy or Mordor.

It doesn't need to have blood. That actually might be to much, i mean this is Spyro we are talking about, we don't want him to rip out spines and disembowel people and have random threesomes like Kratos.

Maybe im asking to much though.

Re: Skylanders was originally going to be a darker Spyro Game

@OhWellIfYouSaySo Man, your idea sounds awesome. Such a world would be beautiful to explore. smile
But knowing that not even today's game-making software could make such a world run, saddens me. Too bad, I would have paid top money for such a game. But people still have trouble running a 2002 game in a modern game engine. It's playable but is plagued by random crashes and stuff like that (it isn't finished yet either). It's this huge, though:

MW-Map-Vvardenfell.jpg

I don't how big the world you described to me is. Is it as big as that island above? Or bigger? Or smaller? Really would like to know.  smile
