Well, what about the upcoming game Skyrim? That's a huge world, and im sure that a Windows 7, or a Playstation 3 would easily run it. If there were to be such a Spyro gamne, it would work better on consoles IMO. Spyro has always been a console game, i can't see him on a PC.

Re: Skylanders was originally going to be a darker Spyro Game

Well, what about the upcoming game Skyrim?

Well, it's going to be as big as Cyrodiil in Oblivion. But compare Oblivion's game map with the map which I posted above - and there's a huge difference. Some people actually put the game Morrowind into Oblivion's engine - but Oblivion's engine is "overheating" when the player is in Morrowind and it can't deal with Morrowind's huge landscape the way it can run Cyrodiil.

I was actually thinking larger, spaning several continents. So big that several new races and great secrets are revealed, and so big that it spawns it own Mythos. It would be great if the game was long.

It can be done, actually. Heavy coding (with a huge use of maths) can do it. Here's how it works.
Let's say you want to build the continent of Africa, detail-by-detail. One level won't cut it but around 400 of them will and everything can be put together with teleporting codes as if it's one big level. It's a bit hard to explain, really.
The big issue is space, though. It can be done but on a huge-size Blu-ray disk for the PS3 and 10 DVD disks for the Xbox 360 and PC.

Maybe that's to much to

Not now but maybe in 3-4 years. Technology moves really quickly.  big_smile

You can split the world into different games. One province per game is usually what the big RPG developers do (except for Daggerfall where two provinces were made).

Re: Skylanders was originally going to be a darker Spyro Game

Im not really pointing towards a Spyro RPG, just a LoS game in which more of the world is explored.

I just can't get enough of fantasy worlds when they are presented in non RPG games like Elder Scrolls of Fallout.  When i saw Spyro and Cynder wheeling through the sky at the end of DotD my reaction was:

" No.No! NOOOOO! YOU DO NOT LEAVE ME HANGING ON A SEMI-CLIFFHANGER! I NEED CLOSURE GOD DAMMIT! "

Im a sucker for epilogues, i don't like to see my favorite characters in video games ending with and uncertain and unspecified future. I need something tangible and solid, not a cheap cop out.

It's like Harry Potter. You feel sad it ended and you don't want it to end, but you feel closure as you know the characters futures and you have no need for frustration as everything is over and well.

DotD left us with unanswered questions. Where are all the dragons? Are they in hiding or nearly exterminated? What happens with the world afterwards? Do Spyro and Cynder reunite with the rest of the characters? Does Sparx and the rest even know that they are alive? Oh, and 2/5th's of the world is floating in space after it was nearly ripped in to shreds, what about that?

Dotd isn't the only game with unanswered questions. This PS1 game called Tombi 2 had a cliffhanger ending as well. The main character is given someone's boat as a reward and he drives off in the horizon. He then seemingly drowns. Did he really drown in the water? What about the boss who said he'll be back? A Tombi 3 never happened and those questions will never get answered.

Not to mention Legacy of Kain: Defiance. You best check it out yourself, the series is complicated, and it might not get a sequel as the aforementioned game bombed at the box office.

If you are going to make a cliffhanger and leave unanswered questions, you have to make sure that there will be a sequel, or at least make sure those questions are answered, one way or another.

But the problem is that with LOS, they didn't know there wouldn't be an LOS 4. The developers honestly thought that LOS would continue on and so did I. I even had massive ideas for a fourth game. A demon Ripto would be the main villain and sets up Malefor in the end because of his hate of dragons. No more Malefor but Spyro and Cynder must save the world from the Dragon World version of the Oblivion Crisis.

And the Professor would help Spyro and Cynder along the way. The mole is the last remaining mole in the world and feels isolated but he is very wise about the dragon world and its complex history. A strict LOS fan who hates the Classics told me he liked that potential plotline.
And Bianca and Elora would come back as main characters too, as well as Bentley and even Sheila (though the LOS fan said against including her).

Re: Skylanders was originally going to be a darker Spyro Game

In your idea, would Ripto have a comedic element to him? I hope not, they had a good thing going on with Malefor, even if they did screw him up royal.

And, yeah, old, reimagined characters would be awesome smile

Re: Skylanders was originally going to be a darker Spyro Game

In your idea, would Ripto have a comedic element to him?

Ripto wouldn't be like he was in Spyro 2. He's more clever in my idea and in fact really sly. He would trick Malefor into teaming up with him. Actually, Malefor wanted a partner so he summoned a Ripto from another dimension, which was a decision that Malefor regretted when he was destroyed by Ripto.

On the gameplay side, it would be a free-roaming world with treasure collecting like in the Classics (truthfully, it'll be more Ratchet than Spyro) which can unlock new abilities and stuff like that and with the combat system of Dotd.

And, yeah, old, reimagined characters would be awesome

In my idea, the playable characters from Yotd come back reimagined for LOS with their own personal elemental attacks. Agent 9 would be an old-style agent like the Blades in Morrowind and would use a crossbow instead of a laser gun. Sgt Byrd would master the power of flight and his rocket launchers would be made by the wise Professor.
They would all of course be adapted to LOS, in terms of looks and personality.

Re: Skylanders was originally going to be a darker Spyro Game

I have several ideas about the gameplay. Old co-op with Spyro and Cynder or multiple characters ( Hunter and the rest ) and that you can switch to them and even play it online with friends.

Always wanted to play Hunter from DotD. Jumping like a maniac and shooting arrows....even if he was horribly acted and was kind of useless in the entire game.

But a part of me says that the game should be about Spyro and Cynder alone. Having five characters that you can play as whenever you want seems a bit to much. I don't know.....

Re: Skylanders was originally going to be a darker Spyro Game

@OhWellIfYouSaySo To be honest, I'd rather see a good storyline, solid gameplay and the charm that was present in ANB than playable characters in LOS.

That's just my opinion, though.

You are absolutely right man, but i like to take everything in account, because when everything is balanced, it makes for a solid and enjoyable game.

But yes, those are the high points, something that most games today don't have. That's what makes TF2 so special to me.

Re: Skylanders was originally going to be a darker Spyro Game

Don't forget music. Music is especially important to games. It makes those memories which last with me forever. LOS had awesome music and has now stuck in my head. Valley of Avalar looks and sounds amazing.

The Elder Scrolls also has great music, but Morrowind's music is better than Oblivion's. I dunno if that's just the nostalgia talking, though.

On a side note, I like your avatar. It's very cool. smile

Yes, the music was pretty good, and i was suprised by the quality of the lyrics in "This Broken Soul". "Guide You Home" is more of a guilty pleasure to me. It has a great feel, great rythm, sounds fantastic, but the lyrics remind me of some teenage pop song.

I have to be honest, i have never played The Elder Scrolls, but i have listened to the music after i saw the trailer for Skyrim.

I thought you played them? Anyway, Morrowind is a great game if you can get into it. The game with its expansion packs Tribunal and Bloodmoon will give you around 620+ hours of gameplay for around $10.

And that's excluding unofficial mods.  smile

More great music comes from Medal Of Honor: Frontline and Red Dead Redemption.

Bottom line, i liked the LoS Soundtrack. Got really epic by the third game.

True, it did get really epic in Dotd despite the re-using of songs sometimes but that's fine because the Classics did that as well.

In Spyro 3, Insomniac re-used songs from the beginning of the game in the last few levels (not so good for motivation!). And in the Elder Scrolls, you only have 7 exploring songs, 7 combat ones and some title music (but the composer Jeremy Soule charges $1,000 per minute per track).

Voice acting (if there's any) is very important as well. ETD had bad voice acting and in LOS, it was decent but you can kinda hear that the voice actors and actresses were a bit...sleeptalking? Elijah Wood and co could have done a better job, imho.

Yeah, i was pretty suprised when i learned that Sirius Black and Frodo would be lending their voices in game. I found that Gary Oldman was a wee bit to quiet and Elijah was fairly decent, although when it came to dramatic parts he failed, which is suprising considering what a good job he did on LotR. Also, why did they change Cynder's voice actor so much? The first two were fine, but Cristina Ricci? Her voice was so flat you could of used it as a coffee table -.-

Maybe the original voice actress for Cynder refused to do any more voice work herself? Or maybe she demanded an atrocious sum of money?

LOS had so much potential but the developers refused to find a balance between great gameplay and good charm. Combine the charm of ANB (and get the original voice actors and actresses back!) and the gameplay of Dotd and that would be the ultimate LOS game.

ANB had such a clunky combat system, it was unbelievable. It wasn't smooth at all. A little bit more tweaking and the game would have been perfect in my opinion. Oh well, what's done is done.  :-|

I found the gameply in DotD to be clunky and slow, annoying and copied from GoW, obviously trying to cater to the fans of GoW style gameplay.

I actually breathed a sigh of relief that I could actually get through the game without saying to myself "This is so frustrating! 50 enemies and I'm still not done yet?!?!".

I was frustrated with the ANB and TEN's combat system. I don't know why, though. And in that tiki level (forgot the name, it was in ANB), I loved pushing the enemies off the cliffs. That was classic!  big_smile
And the train and flying levels were awesome too. Wish there was more flying levels in ANB.

Yeah, the levels were pretty awesome when they had cliffs! My favorite way to get rid of enemies was to equip electricity and then swing them off the clifs with it XD....ehhhh.... Good times...

But the combat in TEN......Crikey, that was impossible! That pirate captain dude was harder than the last boss! Hell, even some minor enemies were harder than the final boss, like the wolves and those massive undead floating skeletons.
