Ever hear of "Pax Romana" or Roman Peace? Ever read 1984? The basis of 1984 is that the government takes over the every-day lives of each citizen, down to making certain thoughts into crimes (known as thought-crime), effectly hammering down any conflict. While I'm not saying this will happen, it goes to show that it's not impossible (nor does history say it doesn't work) and that if there was a singular ruler on the earth, any small factions that stood against it would be crushed by the majority.

Loneknight, During the Pax Romana, there still were minor conficts in the Roman Empire. China was constantly at civil war. Today, historians are saying we are in the Pax Americana, "American Peace." We are at war in Iraq. There are wars in Africa. There will always be war in one place or another. You can't get around that.

As for a global empire, as long as religion exists, it won't happen. That's why we can't win in Iraq. All we're doing is putting a line of soldiers between the Sunni and Shiite. They HATE each other. No government can ever stop that.

Come on, you are not saying that that is the cause of lack of global unity...

Yes, it is. People believe they are doing what they think is necessary for them to get to "heaven" or achieve enlightenment or reach Nirvana. There are people in the U.S. who hate each other due to race.

Racial stuff can be solved, come on! (No offense, my opinion) It's like judging a car is better than the other because it's painted this or that way.

You really need to visit the southern United States. Gangs hate each other due to race, religion. I live next door to someone who hates Muslims and Mexicans. Racism will never be eliminated.

Ooh, yeah. I live in Georgia. There's plenty going around.
But Georgia's nothing compared to South Carolina and Mississippi. Those 2 states probably hold the most hatred.
Mississippi even still has the Confederate flag in their state flag!
