Re: What does the Spyro community in general think of this game?

I actually just got this game today in the mail ( big_smile  big_smile  big_smile ) and have thus far only played up until meeting Elder Magnus (and he kind of bugged me. What was up with him calling Spryo "sweetheart"?).

The main points of my interest so far are:

-Controls: Mmm. Okay. I liked the "tighter" gameplay of the first games and the hover maneuver, but overall Spyro, moves pretty well. I really like Sgt. Byrd's gameplay revamp, with the rocket boosters and all.

-Moneybags: It's strange; I miss the snobby, pay-now-or-regret-it additude and attire of the original, sophisticate Moneybags, but at the same time, I kind of like the jolly "come-inside-my-friend-and-buy-something" Moneybags.

-Worlds and Dragon Elders: Well, I'm sure I speak for all of us when I say I miss the portals of the old games. On another note, while I think they look cool (and elderly), I would've liked it more if they did a rehaul of the dragon adults from the first game for the dragon elders. For example, Thomas in this game is an old, blue dragon who lives in a cave. Thomas in Spyro the Dragon is a tan (and relatively young) Artisan who was found outside. Magnus, a swamp-dwelling, pink, and in-touch-with-his-feminine-side elder was originally a large and tough, brown-speckled Peace Keeper.

-Etc: Lots of the voice-overs sound either bored or overly exaggerated (I had thought that Ember was going to be cute, not hair-rippingly annoying) and the humor seems forced. I like the large, detailed environments, even though they don't really look like the Dragon Homeworlds. The new ability/powerup-gaining system is neat. Exposition was very abrupt. I liked it better when Sparx's mouth and eyes bulged when he swallowed butterflies.

I could rant on and on about what I like and don't like so far (sheesh, I haven't even played halfway through the dang thing yet!) but I'll stop myself before I do. Anyways, here's my opinion.

Re: What does the Spyro community in general think of this game?

yeah, if a few things were improved in this game it would be better. The Levels are too huge, now im not a big fan of clostraphobic levels but theres SOOO much backtracking and it confusing where you have to go (ETD had the right exact how big levels are)

Re: What does the Spyro community in general think of this game?

The levels weren't too big. They seem too big because you had to do a lot in it. But backtracking is annoying.

Re: What does the Spyro community in general think of this game?

they were much to big for a spyro game. The backtracking didn't annoy me in spyro 2, that was because Spyro 2 levels were easily navagatable.

this game is average. I liked it in some parts but not in most others and it was a bit of a disapointment for me

Re: What does the Spyro community in general think of this game?

I loved this game big_smile it brought me back to the old days of the original Sypro games. i found the part with the hyena in the volcano laughing that shes so miserable to be the best part of the game as in screwed up humour. reminds me of Spyro 2 without all the portals and less levels.

Re: What does the Spyro community in general think of this game?

I had absolutely HATED this game when I had played it when it first came out years ago, due to:

1.Blink's minigames being, annoying as heck.

2.The overall atmosphere of the worlds giving me a feeling like something was wrong or missing from the game.

3.Lack of Dragons
*I don't count those fake elders as dragons, especially that one elder who was a little too Tra La La for me[as in gay, no use pacifying sentences]

4.Lack of a good plot.
*That was a horrible way to bring back Gnasty back, and the revamp of his appearance was like looking at a PBS character [and even THOSE characters look, better than he does.]

5.Most of the minigames were a chore and a huge burden to do.
*Looking at you Cannon games. Talk about wanting to break your controller. Sheesh.

6.Lack of good character development, or good characters at all.
*Ember and Flame were not needed at all let alone as skins. If they HAD to be there, at least give them a bigger part or role instead of just a one time cameo.
*Sgt. Byrd did not need a jet pack.
*Bentley was just pitiful, he could've taken those yeti out by himself. He's a wuss in this game. At least in the YotD he was the "heart of gold, gentle giant" that still kicked butt. Case in point, when he found out that another yeti was picking on his little brother, he donned some boxing gloves and took action.

7. Where were the other characters from the past games??
*No Sheila. No Agent 9. No Handel and Greta. No Elora. No Bianca.
They could've added to the story in a way that MIGHT have made AHT more bearable. But noooooooooooo. *rolls eyes*

8. Speaking of character revamps. Moneybags.
*Whyyyyy??? Why would you try to change something that was so perfect??? Moneybags was a character that would be someone that you can love and hate for numerous reasons. Now he just tries to get you buy stuff from his Qwik-E-Mart instead of teasing you (and your enemies in Ripto's case) with something that can help you progress further into the game for...ahem...a small fee.

9. Sparx is not supposed to talk!!!
*His kazoo voice paired with his subtitles were what made him funny in the first place. Now if you want to give him a voice, give him something that's believable, please? Nice try but his minigames suck as well, go back to YotD and take notes.

10. Biggest mistake was taking out the portals.
*All it did was make the game even more confusing and frustrating, and the crappy design of the map helped none.

11. Lack of unlockables (that ppl cared about) and secrets.
*Again, take notes from the original 3 Spyro games.

12. Hardly any replayability value whatsoever.
*The only reason anyone would go back to play is if they forgot to get an egg or LG, or they needed a reminder of why they stopped playing in the first place.

Overall: -1/10

Now, that was my score for it back then. When I dug it out from some old junk in the basement a couple of weeks ago, I had a fleeting feeling in the back of my head that it was supposed to be worth squat. But I had to play it again to be reminded why. I still have the same view of it as I had so many years before, but with a more maturer sense. As I am a developer-in-training, I started thinking like one, and how the game can be improved instead of hating how it came out:

1. Some of the new abilities were brilliant.
*Double Jump was great for ppl who was always kind of annoyed at missing the platform in the original games (even though half those said platforms usually led you to a secret)
*Ledge Grab was also great for when you needed that extra inch to get where you are going. (Something that could've been very useful in the old games.) etc etc

1i. How it Can Be Improved:
*Bringing back some of the old school ways of receiving new abilities could've been a fun and nostalgic addition to the game. (Ex. getting kissed by those fairies you rescued in Haunted Towers in the first Spyro game. To me it was cute, funny, and gave a wierd feeling of accomplishment when Spyro gets awarded. It's almost like the classic feeling you get when Mario finally rescues Peach except on a smaller scale.)
*A totally new concept of Spyro using himself to solve puzzles. (Ex. He could maybe use his horns to drill through rock, or screw something in. Just trying to think of something creative.)

2. Blink.
*When I played as Blink again, I saw how I (and many others) would have perceived him as annoying to play as, though he has something to him that I think could be expanded upon and explored deeper to bring out his full potential.

2i. How it Can Be Improved:
*To put it bluntly, 1. Blink needs his own game. His character just screams that to me. 2. He needs better abilities (that much I agree on), more of a bigger role in Spyro's life than just fetching him collectables (maybe help with a boss fight or something a-la YotD), and a backstory (maybe to explain why he's got fresh-air-a-phobia, lol.).

3. Portals. We needs 'em.
*AHT has proved that we portals to properly locate levels without the confusion.

3i. How it Can Be Improved:
*For those who are like "Noooo omg. We don't need no stinking portalz!!110101" That's fine. Just have signs hanging around that show the way to different levels. (Ex.

                ___________________
              /  Cloudy Domain         |
              \___________________|

Something like that ya know?)

4. Map needs to be executed better.
    *Self explanatory

4i. How it Can Be Improved:
*At least have markings on the map that tell where the levels are.

5. Characters.

5i. How it Can Be Improved:
*I believe Hunter was a step in the right direction, but a few slight adjustments here and there with his look would make him an awesome character to work with.
*Ember and Flame need to have more of a role as I've said before. Perhaps they could teach you a new ability or award you with something for every task you do for them. (which'd make things more fun and interesting.)
*Replacing Spyro with Sgt. Byrd in the Speedways was not necessary nor needed, Byrd could've been useful elsewhere. Since he is an air force sgt. he could've played a part in a minigame where he could take down foes in the air. (maybe even fight a boss of his own, speaking of which I'll expand upon later.)
*Sparx minigames needs to go back to the YotD concept as the AHT version is a bit harder to use, it can be improved upon without switching back to the old concept by making it a side-scroller minigame to make it more interesting.
*Gnasty Gnorc's look needed to look tougher like in the first game instead of overly dumb, more like a brute to be exact who'd like nothing more than to crush Spyro for his previous defeat.
*A recall of some old characters would have been more enjoyable along with adding to the wit and humorous nature that the game originally was supposed to have. Come on, who doesn't like Agent 9 and Mr. Laser making some enemies dance? Or Elora popping up now and then to give you tips or reminding you that you may have missed something? The characters just need a chance to show how they can contribute to the game.
*Red's story was ok, but needed to be deeper. His look needed to be more evil like.
*More NPC's asking for help, saying random things, with frequent appearances would have been nice.

6. Dragons are the main focus of the game remember?
*The lack of dragons was disappointing, and the behavior and look of the ones we had was even more disappointing.

6i. How it Can Be Improved:
*Finding a way to have the dragons around yet not take too much attention from Spyro can be done by having them around for a sort of missions like system. (Ex. Like with Ember and Flame, have the dragons reward you for tasks with non-collectables that may be used to purchase things like secrets and stuff.)

7. Moneybags shop is a good idea.
*But still not executed to it's full potential of course.

7i. How it Can Be Improved:
*This is where the dragon's system ties in, Moneybags shops could be stationed in main places while his minishops could be run by his own team of employees that are just as greedy as he is(hence the difference in prices from the minishops and the main ones). Now Moneybags has gotten used to Dragon Currency so that is what you have to give him to get at the items in his shops. This way is easier for those who don't like gem collecting, but it gives them a challenge while meeting the demands of those that like to collect gems.

Speaking of which, Gem collecting should NOT be a problem for you guys. As starting with Ripto's Rage, Insomniac added in an extra feature to Sparx. By holding all the top buttons on the controller, Sparx should point to where the nearest treasure is. Making it easier for ppl having trouble. So don't give us that excuse for not finding the gems, you lazy ppls.

8. Secrets and Unlockables.
    *Do want.

8i. How it Can Be Improved:
*They are usually what gives a Spyro game some of it's replay value (Ex. the unlimited fireball powerup), it'd be a must to add those in.
*Unlimited flying powerup is probably unlikely but would be great to have.
*Unlockables could be skins of different characters, complete with each of their own special abilities, allowing you to play them outside of their minigames wherever and whenever you want.
*As for the Ember and Flame skin? That's easy. Give Ember longer flight and Flame a longer range of fire. (For those that played Smash Brother's Brawl, think about the differences between Fox, Wolf and Falco besides how they look, especially with their final smash attacks.)
*Secret minigames like maybe a boxing match with Bentley, or a shooting gallery with Agent 9.
*Heck, it could even be set up where you cannot get to use some secrets without completing the secret minigames. The Secrets of Secrets, man.

And as a note. There needs to be more minibosses in the games, that'd make things more interesting. Like Byrd taking down a raptor during flight or Blink bombing a giant cave beetle or centipede.

Ya know, for the epic win and all.

TL;DR AHT sucks badly, but can be fix'd.

That's all I have to say for now. Bye Spyro peeps.

Re: What does the Spyro community in general think of this game?

To me it was a really good game, i cant get enough of it, yea its a bit easy but its really fun to play (to me) the attacks and elements are good, the levels are good, and the bosses are fun to kill, and collecting eggs and light gems are real good fun and sort of a challenge at the same time well to me it is.

In general i think Spyro a Hero's Tail is a really good game and anyone who loves Spyro should go out right now and go and get it and never sell it because it is one of the most awesomest Spyro games that i have ever played and i will never ever ever ever sell it. A big 10/10 for being one of the awesomest Spyro games ever out!

Re: What does the Spyro community in general think of this game?

The graphics were beautiful in the game, I give graphics 9/10. They might've been able to of been better.
Music:I don't remember most of the music, but some of it was to 'happy' for me.
Gameplay was fun and very challenging in parts, like the last world place.
Charaters seemed more fun in this game. I REALLY hated seeing Gnasty Gnorc for two reasons: one, I ALREADY KILLED U IN THE FIRST GAME, 2, he's butt ugly tongue I'm so nice.
The story was good in my opinion, but not my favorite.
