Well, SR, the forum I used to get ideas from for our forum has a whole "New People" board. Maybe a big board might be more easily spotted than a thread...I notice people posting "Hi I'm new here posts" everywhere from the site suggestions to the dawn of the dragon boards. Having a board would be more noticeable than a thread.
