Trailer and information about "Skylander's: Spyro's Adventure"

Shocking.

Skylandersgame.com doesn't seem to be up yet.

Also, this game looks to have the fun factor.  So I would encourage everyone to have an open mind about it.

Santa Monica, CA - February 11, 2011 - Activision Publishing, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI) announced today the worldwide debut of Skylanders Spyro's Adventure, an entertainment breakthrough for the toy and video game industries. Through an innovative use of technology, the game allows players to transport real-world toys into virtual worlds of adventure through the "Portal of Power." These "toys with brains" can come to life inside the game in connection with multiple gaming platforms, as well as on handheld gaming devices, mobile devices and on the web, remembering achievements and level-ups wherever they go. This marks a wholesale change in the interaction between toys and video games, opening up new possibilities and revenue streams for both industries.

"These are more than action figures. They are inter-action figures," said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing. "By pairing world class character design, world class video game design and world class story telling into one entertainment experience, we've given players a whole new genre that bridges the gap between the real and virtual worlds. From the first time a kid picked up a stick and pretended it was a sword, toys have unlocked kids' imaginations. And how often have you wanted to bring those toys to life, to see them become animated and take them on an adventure? Skylanders Spyro's Adventure does just that."

This new interactive experience will make its worldwide debut and be available for demos at the American International Toy Fair (Booth #3055), which takes place February 13 - 16 at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in New York City.

Activision brought its gaming expertise together with top Hollywood creative talent to bring Skylanders Spyro's Adventureto life. The game and technology was developed by Activision's Novato, California studio, Toys for Bob, led by creative director and studio head, Paul Reiche. The adventure driven story was penned by two of the Academy Award nominated writers of the original Toy Story movie, Alek Sokolow and Joel Cohen. The result is a line of highly collectible characters, an engaging story, and an immersive interactive entertainment experience.

There are many unique and innovative elements to this experience, including:

Each Character Has its Own Unique Powers- In addition to the highly collectible design and personalities of the toys themselves, each character has different powers and abilities, opening different experiences inside the game. Players can drop in and out of each level with as many different characters as they like, making each players experience unique.

Toys With Brains - Each toy/character remembers the player's shared experiences. Achievements and leveled up capabilities earned in the game are embedded inside the toy and travel with the toy. Wherever the toy goes, its experiences go with it.

Portal of Power - The Portal of Power serves as the gateway between our world and the amazing world of the characters in Skylanders Spyro's Adventure.

jsimag0859.jpg

Play With Friends - By placing two characters on the Portal of Power at once, players can team up together for cooperative play, or face off in player versus player battle arenas utilizing their leveled up characters.

Diverse Experiences on Diverse Devices - While the toys can be used with gaming consoles to play the disc based game, completely different gaming experiences await them on the mobile app and inside the Web World, each of which were designed specifically for those platforms. The result is a remarkable number of different gaming experiences in one game.

To support the launch of the game, Toys "R" Us will join forces with Activision for a global marketing partnership in which stores across the globe will feature several Skylanders Spyro's Adventure exclusives this fall.

"We began discussing this concept with Activision and immediately knew merging the world of toys and video games together in Skylanders Spyro's Adventure would capture the imagination of a wide range of consumers, including kids, toy collectors and video game enthusiasts," said Jerry Storch, Chairman and CEO, Toys"R"Us, Inc. "We believe this product line is among the most exciting and unique offerings that will be seen at Toy Fair this year, and we are excited to partner with Activision to bring Skylanders Spyro's AdventuretoToys"R"Us stores this fall."

Skylanders Spyro's Adventure lets kids take on the role of a powerful Portal Master, who can control over 30 different characters, including the beloved purple dragon Spyro. Each of these heroes is a protector of an amazing, mysterious world, but they have been ejected from their world by the sinister Portal Master known as Kaos and now they are frozen in our world as toys. Only the players of Skylanders Spyro's Adventure can get them back into their world, by embarking on a fantastical journey where they will explore mythical lands, battle menacing, outlandish creatures, collect treasures, and solve challenging puzzles as a part of the quest to save their world.

What did I just watch?

The other "characters" look like generic bug-eyed monsters. I doubt they're characters so much as in-game avatars without personalities.

I never expected this. It does look like a combination of AHT and a bit of LOS - and yes, I can't resist "treasure collecting" but...

Spyro looks weird. Other than that, I hope the gameplay will be good.

Re: Trailer and information about "Skylander's: Spyro's Adventure"

I think the game play looks pretty cool.  And I bet this is going to be a really fun game. Of course, Spyro's design.... is a bit... trollish, and the game really seems to have nothing to do with any other Spyro games.  I'm a bit disappointed with some of it, really, but I'm definitely going to buy it and try it out.  I'm not going to say in R.I.P. Spyro nonsense until I try it our myself.  Like I said, this seems nothing like a Spyro game, and I hate to see Spyro go down this way, but, despite all of that, the game actually does look fun.  I'm more of an original Spyro fan then a LOS fan, though. I can't imagine what the LOS fans are going to feel about this.  I have a feeling it's not going to be good... I can't imagine what's going to happen when Cynder doesn't return... *hides from angry mob* Anyways, I guess what I'm trying to say is, I'm going to keep an open mind about this.  I've been a Spyro fan since I was 5 and I'm not just going to put him in his grave this quickly.

Re: Trailer and information about "Skylander's: Spyro's Adventure"

I thought Spyro was officially ruined...until I found out that it granted my wish for LOS and Classic Spyro to come together.   :-|

I had enough of the collecting items things from the Eye of Judgement. That's why I got a bit angry. I hope that all of the characters will be able to move quickly and easily (unlike ANB Spyro's fighting  mad ). And the music should be good.
But I will not go crazy over the toys. Just three is enough for me.

PS. Looks like Yotd with Dotd graphics  big_smile

Re: Trailer and information about "Skylander's: Spyro's Adventure"

It's starting to sadden me to see all these people looking negatively on this game... are people really going to give up on Spyro that easily? It seems like every video I see people are talking about how stupid it is and how Spyro is going down the toilet.

All I have to say now is... LONG LIVE SPYRO!

Re: Trailer and information about "Skylander's: Spyro's Adventure"

I'm not sure what to think of this... really.
To me it doesn't look like, eh, a spyro game. It looks like... a random game that *happens* to have Spyro in it. Especially since it's called Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure.
If it was called Spyro: Adventure in Skyland or something then.... yeah that would be better.
From the trailer it looks like he's the only dragon in it. (no Cynder or Elders? ~forever alone~)

And his looks, just, wtf. We've gone from cute and cartoony, to more realistic, and now we have SPYRO THE DEMENTED CHAMELEON.
I really.... don't know anymore. It's like Activision saw how many fans were raging over how DoTD was too serious and things and that they wanted old cartoony spyro back ,but Activision took it too far and made it too childish. Eek! I know I'm 12 (13 this year) but honestly... I don't think it's gonna attract 6-12 year olds. 3-10 maybe.

The toy thing is sorta cool though.

One thing I want to know. Does it have multiplayer co-op like DoTD? If not, I will go die somewhere.

If you look closely, you can see other dragon-type characters in the toy shots.  One looks to have horns that resemble malefor's.  No confirmation that other LoS dragons are in it, but in Moneybag's SHop, I'm placing a bet that Cynder WILL be in the game.  Any takers? find the thread.

If this didn't have the toy-to-game gimmick and there weren't 32 other characters, this would be awesome. Even if Spyro looks ugly.

I wasn't very happy with the augmented reality either.  But I guess we'll see how it goes.

Here's what looks to be the portal and the spyro figurine:

IGN wrote:

Here's how it works. When sold at retail, the game will come bundled with a special "Portal" peripheral as well as three different character figurines. The Portal plugs into the game console, and when players place a figurine on the portal, that character appears in the game. As long as the figurine remains on the portal, it saves everything the player does in the game. The player can then take the figurine to a friend's house and pull the character into his friend's game, complete with all the details and stats he accomplished in his own game. The use of the toys is less of a gimmick than in some other games because the fact that the characters are tiny frozen figurines is weaved into the game's mythology.

skylanders-spyros-adventure-20110211081123086-000.jpg

Additional figurines (more than 30 total) will be sold separately. Each of them will represent a different character, and all of them will play differently in the game. Players can switch characters on the fly by simply placing a different figurine on the portal. And from what I saw, the transition was instantaneous. In addition, the prototypes of the figurines I was shown looked pretty cool. They stand about 2-3 inches tall and feature colorful, creative designs. Since Activision expects them to retail for $10 or less, they seem to be good quality for the price.

While the toy angle seems cool, the actual gameplay is a little bit more of a question mark. During my demo, I didn't actually get to the play Skylanders, but what I saw appeared to be a pretty standard third-person adventure game with plenty of enemies to take out and some puzzles to solve along the way. It looked OK, but I didn't see anything that really impressed me. Skylanders will feature both cooperative and competitive multiplayer, with the player vs. player looking to hold the most promise, as it will require strategy in selecting which characters to use against your opponent, as well as leveling them up.

Woah, woah, woah! I just realized something.  So... is Sparx not going to be in the game at all... because of all characters, Sparx has ALWAYS stuck around. That's going to be weird...

Hey, its still a prototype. Spyro's appearance can change, and most likely will change, as well as possibly them adding more characters we know and love. It has some promise, as it makes me think of those good old days with the interactive playsets that connect to the computer and all that.

riverhippo, what about Sparx? If Sparx will appear in the game, I'll be really, REALLY happy.  big_smile

This is starting to actually look promising. I hope they won't go too far with the figurines like the cards at... *cough The Eye of Judgement *cough

But Sparx has always been by Spyro's side in ALL 13 Spyro games. No appearance of Sparx would indeed be weird.  hmm

Best way they could implement Sparx in the game is put him alongside Spyro or make him one of Spyro's abilities. Or something like that.

On a side note, I think that the Spyro's Adventure subtitle is because its that, Spyro's Adventure. Pretty much it sounds like each character would have some story of their own, and that Spyro would be included for the first character to be collected, that or an expansion at least. So technically it would be called Skylanders, but I guess Spyro's Adventure is the first character and story to be released for this game.

Powers and abilities != personality. "Personality of the toys" (which could mean just about anything) != a good character in game.

I mean really, if there are going to be 32 characters, what are the chances that they'll actually have any depth? Not likely.

But still, don't knock it till you've tried it I guess. I'm going to give it a chance (if I can find it for cheaper than $70....); I'm just... not impressed so far.

Re: Trailer and information about "Skylander's: Spyro's Adventure"

We still don't know much about the game besides the fact it will be based on toys, each character has their own powers and abilities, and thats it. Like i said in my 'rewritten' post before, it seems as though Spyro's Adventure would be the first part of this Skylanders game. So therefor, Spyro will be the character exclusive for this part, it will involve something around him and maybe his world. I dunno just yet, but things for these games are bound to change. Just look at Epic Mickey and so on.

Re: Trailer and information about "Skylander's: Spyro's Adventure"

I sure hope so, but (I hate to keep bringing up the age range thing again...) the first thing I thought when I saw the characters is that they remind me of toys on a commercial you'd see on TV that's obviously aimed at young boys.

Which is apparently their target audience. So I'm doubtful that it'll change too much at this point.
