Re: Spyroforum`s First Impressions of Skylanders
While a fan of this game, I'll also agree that Skylanders is not really a "Spyro" game in the same way the Legend of Spyro is not really a "Spyro" game. Skylanders is a completely different series with its own unique style of gameplay. However, that doesn't mean it's automatically "bad," just "different."
[https://www.fanfiction.net/u/5597209/spashthebandragon] I've got fanfics for Spyro, Crash Bandicoot, Frozen, and Spectacular Spider-Man. Err, separately, I mean. Not some weird crossover thing. Those are all separate fanfics.

Re: Spyroforum`s First Impressions of Skylanders
So, i just found out about this game and browsed through all the available media and data..
My first impression was like "WHAT THE HELL??? >:( I don't even... -=THIS=- thing is Spyro?" The very first thing shocking is the redesign of Spyro which carried with me through all the rest of research and couldnt get any better.. This... is.. atrocity.. it reminds me a pug dog.. and a gremlin at once.. I couldn't have imagined it worse. How can you take a perfect design and screw it up so bad? The huge part of Spyro success was not only the game mechanics but how _appealing_ the character looks. Now it just disgusts me. I'd play any other of those random freaks over him.. Not to say they are good either. And this was the job a dreamworks employee?? What was it? Someone's kid, or an intern?
Well, whatever, i continued reading and watching, and my righteous rage was not fading not an inch.. I know what you guys are saying, this is not release yet yadda-yadda, but i DO know a lot about activision-blizzard, and quite deep even from development standpoint. And i can tell you.. They arent gonna change anything. The game is almost ready, the rest is bureaucracy stuff, you would be surprised how long it actually takes. The game shall be released with this butt-ugly spyro, no amount of your feedback can change that. Especially your feedback. Activision's policy is to completely ignore player/fan base (has developed like that in the last few years only). Now they pretend that we dont exist, even though they are making the game for -=US=-. Why would you use a mascot character otherwise if not to attract its fans?! There is only one tiny chance exist that they will revamp the design at this point, that is if one of "the guys upstairs" would personally descent from the high heaven to check out the game and wont be "happy"(tm) with it. They usually are "happy"(tm) with everything they do, btw. Arrogance at its finest.
This game is blatantly using Spyro's name as an extra weight to sell it, and if it doesnt work (activision doesnt trust in spyro it seems) welp not a big deal - there are a whole lot of freaks to play this game with. This is not a spyro game, this is a game with spyro - toys hot-swapping should have convinced everyone. It can not be a spyro game if you can pick the toy at any moment off the disk and replace. The whole general IDEA, the game's very perk is encouraging toys-swapping, playing with anything but spyro.
Next, the game itself.. This is gonna be a flashy disneyland-park with monsters and platformer puzzles, there is no universe, and it isnt Spyro universe. And thank god - it would be even worse if the band of toy-freaks would be running around avalar/dragon castle/etc.
Moving on to the trailer.. What the hell is going on with the graphics? Is this supposed to be nextgen console? Loks more like playstation-2.. Spyro is moving like a wooden macabre, animation is not smooth, is not convincing, even in playstation-1 Spyro it was better
Some characters are ripoff from another activision-blizzard game, world of warcraft -> night elf rogue and murloc marine(gill guy) /sigh..
And on top of that the money syphon that this game is supposed to be.. Yeah right, Robert Kotick, you can take your toys and shove them up your...... ... fine fine, im cool, im fine.. I just wont be buying it, that's all. If you are being so honest, mr. Kotick, to admit that the only reason of console gadgets like this is to suck out the blood.. i mean money from the customers, then at least offer a quality merchandise. I have seen a lot better plastic figures for like 1/3 of the price, china-made ones, mind you, why couldnt you do any better? They look bloody-awful -_-
Activision doesnt deserve my money for what they've done. Im pretty sure this game will soon get Hx'd and i'll pirate it just to see for educational purpose. A rare case when i wouldnt feel guilty for doing such a thing(dont point fingers, okay? i bought all the other spyro games licensed, even two copies of TLOS-3 to support the title). You know, if i wanted a non-spyro game, i'd be already playing it. But dont try to cheat me, abusing my fan feelings by a spyro lable slapped on it. THIS is what keeps the rage rolling in. Not only the fact of making a bad spyro, not even "enter the dragonfly" has ignited such a feeling inside me. It's the fact that they treat us, spyro fans, like complete morons that will swallow every piece of cheap trash if you slap spyro name on it, even if it's not spyro game at all..
Well, that's all i have to say for now.. And here, Kotick's ugly-*bleep*-spyro is waiting for your money -
PS: I realise it's quite an emotional post, and it might hurt some people feelings, people that liked this upcoming game for some reasons. You know, there will ALWAYS be someone defending/liking even the worst/weirdest possbile thing you can ever imagine, because people are so different. Well, just keep in mind that it is, exactly, my first and fresh impression. And emotions drive a lot of it. It is your right to desagree with me, i wont be even arguing.

I totally get where your coming from. It clearly looks like Activsion wants money for this game, especially the way they have targeted to children with the whole figurine "portal thing". It just doesn't apeal to me at all. It seems to me that Activision doesn't want any fan apeal at all, they just want money. And that sort of angers me. It's not just all about money, its also about fan appeal.
I'll probably look at what the critics say before I buy it because I just have no idea how good/ bad it will be.
And also I'm just stating my opinion and if some people really like the idea, it doesn't bother me at all. We're all individuals and like different things.

Don't worry, you haven't said anything to "hurt people's feelings." Given the extremely limited amount of info about the game right now, whether or not you like it is completely subjective.
That beings said, I disagree with you on 99.99% of this post. You've highlighted the three most common complaints I've heard about this game, but really it all comes down to opinion:
1) Spyro looks ugly
2) This isn't a "real" Spyro game, they just slapped Spyro's name on it to sell more.
3) Buying toys to unlock characters is a blatant scam to get money.
Well, bearing in mind this is just my random opinion, here's my response (Not trying to prove you wrong, just putting the 180 of your arguement onto the table):
1) Spyro looks kinda cute, actually. So do pugs.
2) Legend of Spyro did the same thing, and you said you bought two Dawn of the Dragons to support that series, you shameless hypocrite.
2) (again) I accept that Activision just slapped Spyro's name onto a random video game idea. This doesn't bother me, and I will still buy this game.
3) You're right, congratulations, have yourself a cookie! Personally, I think that if the developers spent the time designing a game, the least I can do is pay for it, especially since buying figures besides the ones that come with the game is optional. I'll buy like 4 toys then stop. Worst come to worst that'll be as expensive as buying a second video game, and won't that just be the end of the world as we know it? (Note: I'm guestimating. I didn't use any math here.)
So yeah, just my opinion. Don't worry, you haven't offended anyone.
^This. Yeah, a lot of Spyro fans have been saying the same thing you said about this game, Kodar. So it's no big surprise...

This also applies to Trigger Happy, only multiplied times 10. He is very good at making things blow up.

Re: Spyroforum`s First Impressions of Skylanders
At first I was unsure but when I saw Spyro's design, I felt more negative. Whatever that thing is in Skylanders, it's not Spyro.
What annoys me the most is that the game would work fine on it's own. They're just using Spyro's name to rake people in.

I agree, activision are just milking the spyro brand as they know it has a fanbase, it used to be about Spyro, now its all about money making.

Agreed. I consider it a continuity reboot or reinterpretation of Spyro. A purple dragon in some form is better than no purple dragon. (Plus you could just not play with the Spyro toy and then Spyro technically wouldn't be in the game, so are you happy, complainers?

Even if you don't play as him, Spyro is still in the title being used to sell more copies despite having nothing to do with any previous Spyro titles. This is one of the same complaints I had about LoS.

Couldn't you say the same about all of those cartoon racing games? I mean, they are all the same karting game with obstacles and weapons and the characters are thrown in to sell the game. What's the difference?

Re: Spyroforum`s First Impressions of Skylanders
The difference is that everyone knows that franchises that get thrown into kart racing games aren't going to have their continuity completely destroyed. In other words, they're not going to only be kart racing games forever. People are angry about Skylanders because they liked Spyro how it was before, and now it's another reboot.
That's probably why there are so many "Super Smash Spyro" comments floating around. People are hoping this will be a one-time thing before they go back to making more TLoS games or whatever. (Which is funny, because TLoS did exactly the same thing as Skylanders is doing now. But that's a discussion for another topic.)

Mario Kart is an offshoot game featuring Nintendo characters as cameos, it isn't a reboot of the story that will lead us all to have to think of Mario as a new character with the same name.

Re: Spyroforum`s First Impressions of Skylanders
Well, speaking of Mario, that franchise has it's own "Slap his name on it so it will sell" title. It was called Super Mario Bros. 2. And even though it wasn't as good as the others (depending on who you talk to) they still sold millions of copies and the game was enjoyed a lot.
And anyways, Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage could have easily been somebody else's game. Just replace Spyro and Sparx with a different pair of hero personalities and replace words like "dragon" and "torch" and you have a completely different game, or same game.
IMO, the whole argument of them using Spyro's name to sell games is the whole reason why any of the Spyro games (other than the first one) exist. Insomniac could have made another platformer with a different hero, but they decided that Spyro would continue to sell so they went into that direction and slaped his name on G2G and YotD.
I know this sounds ridiculous, but it makes sense when you realize Spyro 2 could almost stand alone. I am almost willing to believe that the "avalar" concept was thought up several years before the game was made, and then Insomniac bought the rights to it to turn into a Spyro game.

No no no, your point is right in theory, but Spyro 2 was building on gameplay concepts from Spyro 1, which is what sequels are all about. Both LoS and Skylanders are reboots, not a sequel, so they can completely rework concepts and add or throw out old ones if they want.
That does not mean, however, that Skylanders is a bad thing. Heck, the whole arguement that "The designers just did X so the game would sell more!" is invalid anyways. You might as well say "The designers of Spyro 1 made him a dragon so it would sell more!" or "They put in high quality graphics and gameplay so it would sell more!" or even "They decided to make a video game just so they could sell it!"
Well, yeah.. they DO want to make money. As passionate as Spyro developers may or may not be, bottom line is they have to earn more than they spend on a game. And if creating a new continuity, gameplay, ect, while still using the same maskot means money, so be it. If they thought old Spyro would keep the franchise alive they would've kept it that way, and so long as it's a good game, who cares?
I mean, the game isn't old Spyro, but it's also not trying to be. Personally while I would love it if they made another good classic-style game, I don't want EVERY game to just be "Spyro 3 + New Shiny Stuff." After the 20th game building off of old concepts with nothing radically new, it'll stop being fun to me (*coughcough*Pokemon*coughcough*).

Re: Spyroforum`s First Impressions of Skylanders
Riverhippo, the point is they still kept the continuity from previous games up until TLoS came out. There are mentions of previous games even up to Shadow Legacy. At least one character from the other games reappears in every single game and the gameplay remains mostly the same. I haven't played Super Mario Bros. 2, so I can't argue about that part, but I'll bet they didn't completely redesign Mario and change pretty much everything about the world he's in and how the gameplay works. Also, just as a sidenote, Insomniac never had the "rights" to anything; they were just the developers. When they developed the Spyro games, the rights were actually owned by Universal, who payed them to develop the games.
And Spash the Bandragon, I'm perfectly aware that developers have to earn money. I have no problem with this and actually it annoys me when people use "they just want to make money!" as a bad thing. It's just unfortunate in my opinion that if they have to use Spyro, they couldn't have at least keep some of his old continuity and had to resort to yet another reboot. I don't even see how Spyro could make them that much more money anyway; it's not like there's much of a fanbase left and most of the fanbase doesn't seem too happy about this.
All I'm saying is that since this has nothing to do with anything we've ever known to be Spyro at all, I don't see why this had to be a Spyro game. Surely we can all agree on that.

First off, let me highlight something you said:
"I haven't played Super Mario Bros. 2, so I can't argue about that part, but I'll bet they didn't completely redesign Mario and change pretty much everything about the world he's in and how the gameplay works."
This just made me chuckle a tad since you don't seem to know what you're talking about. It's not your fault, but... Okay, I'll explain: SMB2 was a completely unrelated game from SMB1. Nintendo wanted more money, so they switched main characters to Mario sprites to make it to sell. And it was nothing like SMB1.
But back on topic here, I would like to see a game set in old contnuity, just like you. The difference is that you dislike the new continuity, whereas I accept it. So (hopefully) I will get a fun new video game to play whereas you will presumably move on with life or buy some other video game or something. I dunno.
Also, I think I should point out that in my humble opinion, no game company besides Insomniac itself would be capable of recreating a classic-style Spyro game as good as Insomniac. As much as I would love to see a "Toy Story 3" of the Spyro franchise, I doubt any attempt would amount to much besides "Spyro A Hero's Tail 2."

Re: Spyroforum`s First Impressions of Skylanders
After giving it some thought, I do believe the fact that Skylanders is not a "Spyro game" is valid. However, it should not be confused with my general interest in getting this game.
I embrace change, and even though Hunter, Elora, Cynder, and other Spyro characters wont be in this game, I still get excited for the new adventures the purple dragon will face, even if he does it with other characters.
Wake me up... when September ends is here...

Skylanders is a simple continuity reboot. Just like all those Megaman spin-offs, or Yugioh GX, 5d's, and Zexal. Heck, Legend of Spyro was a reboot, too, and I think it was okay. (I mean, it did have Spyro, Sparx, and Hunter, but they were basically different characters.)
I mean, I'd love to see another Classic Spyro, but I don't think it would ever be good enough to top the games I played in my childhood.

Re: Spyroforum`s First Impressions of Skylanders
OK, yeah, I had no idea what I was talking about with Super Mario Bros. 2. Probably just shouldn't have said anything. XD
And I agree we'd never get anything on the level of the original three games and it would probably be something like A Hero's Tail again, but I liked A Hero's Tail, so that would be fine with me. I'm more indifferent to this anyway since I've pretty much given up on Spyro games, but I just wanted to throw some opinions in there.
