Disable Pictures/Videos
Kinda an idea for the site, if it isn't possible to do this atm.
Basicly, for users, like myself, who has dial-up should be allow to disable pictures and videos cause they lagged our computers a lot, and sometime crash us. I don't care about JPEG pictures cause they are small enough but for other pictures and videos, maybe just turn them into links instead of showing them on the thread?

Re: Disable Pictures/Videos
i've often wondered why people just HAVE to post videos directly, instead of just putting a link.
images, it depends. sometimes it's more relevant to the discussion to actually have it posted.
but what it comes down to, i think, is people just changing their ways a little bit. hopefully nobody will have to take administrative action over something like this.

Re: Disable Pictures/Videos
There was a few times where I almost crashed and one time when my PC froze and I had to restart it so ya.. I think this option will be helpful.

I don't mean to be a jerk, but don't you think it's time for a new computer and/or better internet connection? Jpeg images and youtube videos do not require that much power and speed to run them.

My PC is fine, it runs pretty well and fast. Just only internet connection I can get where I live is Dial-Up and there are millions of others the same and I just think it'll be fair if we can disable videos/pictures and they'll just be links for us. I mean I'm okay with loading icons and few JPEGs but most stuff, normally over 1MB, takes too long to load that it can crash my internet.

Re: Disable Pictures/Videos
You're definitely in the minority not being able to load videos or even jpeg images. You're not going to be able to visit many modern websites at all with a connection like that.
Even if it were possible to implement something like this with this forum's software (I'm not sure if it is), honestly, nothing ever really gets done around here in the adding new features department since the only one who can make those changes is the admin. The best suggestion I could give you would be to block images and flash from this website on whatever browser you have, because the forum itself is probably not going to make this change just for one person.

What's the internet without pictures and videos?
That's like a Spyro game without Spyro in it.

It can load, jsut takes too long and I hate the lagged a lot. And I'm prolly not the only person, most people who goes to these sites with my connection don't even try to make an account cause they don't want to use time up to come back.

Re: Disable Pictures/Videos
Most people with that bad of a connection probably aren't on the internet much at all, much less think they'll be able to post regularly on a forum without problems. This site really isn't that bad with flash and huge images and stuff everywhere. You're the first person I've heard of who has problems with loading JPEG images.

Re: Disable Pictures/Videos
If you have Internet Explorer 8, follow these instrutions:
- Go to Tools/Internet Options/Advanced
- Scroll down to Multimedia
- Uncheck "Show Pictures"
- Uncheck "Play animations on webpages"
- Save
That should [will] reduce the butthurt from your connection.

Re: Disable Pictures/Videos
Doesn't DeviantArt put extra CPU usage on the computer?
I don't use it enough to know, but I do know that some websites generally
cause the CPU usage to rise up, depending on the page contents.
DA, as I see it, has similar weight as this website.

to be honest, I don't know about that. DeviantART works fine for me and I only get on the chatrooms, rarely exploring the site itself, because of lagg.

Re: Disable Pictures/Videos
I use to have a Dial Up connection and it was a royal pain when it came to images and such yes, but I'm not sure if the admin has any software to deal with that kind of situation, so I just had to get along with what I had and disable images and such. Sorry that it's such an annoyance to you but hey, at least you can get online.

Well, depending on my job I have phases. Right now I'm working every day of the week so my basic schedule usually revolves around going to work then coming home and falling asleep while I watch a movie, so I haven't had much time, but I hope to remain pretty steadfast in my commitment to the forum
