I need help switching from ice to fire on Eternal Night!

For those of you who have played The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night, I need your help. I am up to the pirate ship place and I just killed all those dudes including the ones that came on the tiny boat. I know I am now supposed to light the fuse with fire but for some reason it is not letting me switch from ice mode to fire mode to do this. I am getting completely frustrated and have even had to put the TV on mute so I don’t have to listen to Sparx taunt me as I try.

Help?

Hi there, welcome to the forum!

I haven't played this game for a while, but what console are you playing it on?

I had the PS2 version, and I think I remember the directional buttons switching breaths.
