Re: Ip adress question

Any device has to be assigned an IP address before it can connect to the internet, so yes, your phone does have one. I wouldn't be able to tell it's a phone just by looking at the IP, though.

The forum logs the IP address used for each post in the moderator control panel, so when I ask for the IP address of a post, it tells me that information along with a list of every IP the user has ever posted from. It also lists if another user has posted from that IP address before, which is useful for seeing who might be using more than one account.

Re: Ip adress question

If you preform a reverse dns lookup of an IP address assigned to a mobile device, you can usually tell if the hostname is mobile due to plain english clues that are usually there. You won't be able to resolve every IP to hostname though, but a simple whois can give you more clues as to the ISP.

For example, take the IP of my phone right now: 74.198.150.246

There's no reverse dns record, but we can whois it http://www.ip-adress.com/ip_tracer/74.198.150.246 and see its owned by Rogers Wireless.
