After Flapjacks mentioned the Spyro subreddit, I decided to go check it out and found this:

why did old Spyro ads have nothing to do with the games themselves? except Spyro's face popping up.

Probably the technique where they try to get you to go "What is this about?" so you'll read the content of the ad.

also that commercial is terrible, haha, that's what i mean, this one and the other Spyro commercials i remember (except DOTD i think) all had nothing to do with Spyro except for a few little glimpses.

DotD had commercials? I wouldn't have guessed any of the LoS series had much advertising at all.
