thought on glitches

we rarely ever find completely useless glitches in Spyro games. they usually end up serving some kind of purpose. what i'm thinking is, what if these glitches we're always finding were intentionally put there by the developers? i'm thinking so they could test out various things in the games more easily.

like in Spyro 3, the doorway in Haunted Tomb conveniently works so you can reach the end of the level just by standing on the first door.

Zoe just happens to be at the right spot to zap you in Dino Mines so you can do the swim-in-air glitch and get to that hidden area.

in Fireworks Factory, the box just happens to give you a proxy jump that lets you reach a *solid* roof where you can easily get to another hidden area.

in Lost Fleet, you can go really high up and the path up is completely solid.

in Seashell Shore, it's possible to jump over the wall in Sheila's area and do the challenge without being timed.

it's past 4 AM as i'm writing this, but you guys get the general idea. it seems like a lot of this stuff was intentionally placed. what do you guys think?

Re: thought on glitches

Oh this was definitely planned by the developers. They wanted to add an extra replay value -- and it worked. We're still finding glitches to this day.

Re: thought on glitches

From my own experience with making games, I know that glitches or loopholes in the game's level boundaries or gameplay mechanics pop up all the time, and becoming aware of and fixing all of them is next to impossible. Just making sure that what the player is meant to do works properly can be difficult. Testing the game and it's different elements and objects in all the different ways and orders that it is not strictly intended to be played is pretty much hopeless.

They made the game(Spyro 3) in a little less than a year, so they didn't have a lot of time for testing. We players on the other hand have had many, many years tongue

I must admit though that I've played with the idea of them putting the glitches in there knowingly, since most of them are fun and don't ruin the experience, but I really doubt it. Maybe they were aware of some of them, but left them in because they didn't really hurt, and focused on just rooting out the bad ones instead.

Re: thought on glitches

some of them seem more practical than fun, like the one in Seashell Shore that turns off the timer. it's also an easy way to get to the room where Sheila talks to Spyro and do stuff there.

also in Icy Peak, you can climb the big ice crystals which helps you get various places.

you're probably right about them just not having time to fix all of them. the original Spyros were *huge* games, figuring out every bug would be really hard.

by the way, there are examples of this in Spyro 2 as well, i just couldn't think of any. the gem near the ladder in Glimmer, and the conveniently-shaped mountains that let you get inside the hockey room in Colossus are two examples.

Re: thought on glitches

I don't think that they would put glitches in the game intentionally. But it is possible that they found them and didn't fix them because the glitches were kinda cool big_smile (For example: swimming in air glitch).
