Spyroforum Fan Game!
Welcome to the Spyroforum fan game project! This is a collaborative game project inspired by all the game ideas that have been popping up lately. Clearly the community wants something like this, so we're going to try to make it happen! This may not get anywhere, but it's worth a shot, right?
The plan is to create a short game (maybe three levels at most for now) similar to the GBA Spyro games. It will be a browser-based Javascript/HTML5 game as this will be the most accessible platform for everyone. The question is whether it will be 2D (sidescrolling) or 3D (like Season of Ice/Flame). I'm including a poll, leaving it up to you guys to decide!
Here you can sign up for positions. To show that you are serious, please briefly describe any experience you may have in the area for which you are applying. Go ahead and take multiple positions if you think you can handle it, but not too many! If I missed anything, let me know.

Re: Spyroforum Fan Game!
Agh, I would've helped but I do not work with browser-type games since I mostly play around with Game engines like I got the Unreal Engine 4 recently and I love this engine. It. Is. Brilliant, spectacular and dam I will actually say this shows the "jaw-dropping" effect of graphics and physics. I will watch this thread though.

Re: Spyroforum Fan Game!
The idea with making a browser-based game is accessibility. This way, you won't have to download anything or have a "gaming" computer to play or even to help out with development. Even if you don't want to sign up as a programmer, you could always take one of the other positions.

Re: Spyroforum Fan Game!
I guess I'll sign up as a programmer, then
Not sure what to vote for yet... Both options have their pros and cons.
A sidescroller would be the easiest to pull off by far, with only two dimensions to worry about. Water and swimming/diving shouldn't be much of a problem. We would only need one sprite for most animations as they could just be flipped over... On the other hand, it's the most different from what the Spyro gameplay usually is, with a significantly different type of level structure.
A 3d(isometric?) one would be more Spyro in terms of gameplay, but would need lots of different sprites for all eight(?) movement directions, unless we do it with 3d models. Programming this would also be more complex, with possible depth sorting issues(if we do it with 2d graphics and not models) and the level designers would have to avoid creating optical illusions that trick the player. I guess a less grid based sort of level structure would also be possible, like in Shadow Legacy, with the visual part of the "terrain" being a big, painted image, as opposed to being composed of smaller tiles.
Having decided on html5/javascript, there is still the option of using webGL or not. It would be essential for anything real 3d stuff like 3d models, but it requires a capable graphics card and is only partially supported in IE.

Re: Spyroforum Fan Game!
Great, I've got you on for programmer then.
I'm thinking isometric if we were to go the "3D" route. I'd rather deal with sprites than full 3D models, seems much simpler.
I'd be interested in learning webGL, but again, I'd like to keep this as minimal as possible.

Re: Spyroforum Fan Game!
I have decided, I will join (Deciding between Level design and Programming) But on one condition, I will actually start doing stuff after next week because that is my last exams week and its also the busiest one.

Re: Spyroforum Fan Game!
I think that's going to end up being my vote as well. Although 3D would be more fun and Spyro-like.

Awesome, that's completely fine! If you think you can handle it, you're welcome to take two slots.

I would prefer 3D as you probably now know I love shiny things.

Re: Spyroforum Fan Game!
I'm voting for 2D.
If we do 2D now and there is a next time, we can still do 3D then, with more experience, and can probably (if not the code directly) re-use some part of the the game system
Uhh... sign me up as an artist as well, I think I can handle it

Re: Spyroforum Fan Game!
I Do like to write.
I'm very good at storyline writing and a very good writer at all.
I Vote 2D Because I think we need to give it a push. It's very fun!
Update: Maybe this question is dumb, but I really need to know: Is the story based on the explain of the level or just the whole story?

Re: Spyroforum Fan Game!
2D is good enough for the first time for practice
I Do like to write.

Show us some
I might join as a programmer, but I'll first take a closer look at javascript. It shouldn't be a problem, but I just want to make sure I understand it a bit before joining. I tried it once when I made a sliding box

I could write a storyline, it's not a problem, but what's the main game's idea? Who the characters? Who's the enemy? I need the basic info before writing a story.

Well, it's the job of the writers to figure all that stuff out. There isn't a story yet.

Re: Spyroforum Fan Game!
Alright then, just a few things to keep in mind:
Writers' grammar and spelling must be perfect or near perfect. The script (and your position) will be rejected if it is not.
Judging by the poll so far, it looks like it's going to be a 2D sidescroller, so we don't need the story to be complex at all. It will also be very short, like maybe three levels. Don't write a huge epic; just a short little adventure similar to, say, Spyro Orange.
I'm tentatively putting you all on for the positions you've expressed interest in.

*Thinks about writing it for an R4 card for DS* What are we using to make the game?

Like I said in the first post, it's going to be browser-based. HTML5 and Javascript.

Re: Spyroforum Fan Game!
Hey, I was wondering if you'd show up! All three programming positions are already taken, but I can put you on for art. I think you'd probably be pretty good at level design or writing, too, honestly.

Re: Spyroforum Fan Game!
He's only banned for a day.
We're not using a game engine; like I've said, it's a browser-based sidescrolling game.
As for what it's about, that's up to the writers. There's no set story yet.
Try reading some of the other posts before posting, please.
