Re: Spyroforum Fan Game!

While I think we should focus on this project and give it the love and attention as if it was our last, and like to observe that a natural progression if we did more could be: 2D -> Isometric -> webGL 3D.

Re: Spyroforum Fan Game!

Well, here are a few very loose ideas (all of which can be tweaked):

1. An new villain has risen and has found the power to hypnotize the adult dragons. Spyro must rescue them by defeating them in battle (all would be moderately easy to defeat, until we get to a boss level/the guardian of that homeworld).

2. Something strange is going on in Avalar, and the only one who can help them is an old foe (Gnasty, Ripto, Sorceress, etc.). They agree to help but on one condition - That you free their minions, who have become trapped somehow (perhaps not crystal, to avoid too much repetition). The ending could either go the cliché route that the villain was behind it all along and just trying to stall Spyro  (perhaps, if it were Gnasty, the Gnorcs could then turn on him - Which would explain their friendliness to Spyro in Spyro 2), or maybe another new villain really is causing them grief, and Spyro needs to team up with him/her somehow.

3. Spyro and the other dragons are all gathered for a celebration, when suddenly a strange gust of magic causes them all to disappear (minus our hero, for one reason or another). Spyro needs to find out just what happened, and work out how to get them back (why yes, I am listening to the Ecco the Dolphin soundtrack - What made you ask?).

So, thoughts? I can come up with some other ideas if people would prefer. I'm partial to number 2 myself, since I'd love to 'connect' the first and second game like that.

Re: Spyroforum Fan Game!

I like the gameplay possibilities of your option 1, RadSpyro, though I like option 2 aswell as that was the time period I liked, could we combine them?

How soon could our programmers craft a prototype? It may be best if the story takes que from the gameplay, rather than the other way around.

(I'm currently imagining Spyro Orange [ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jUwB5ftJrng ] style based on the general consensus for 2D, and I agree it would serve as a gentle start as we get to know one another.)

Edit: Saw and played Sheep's prototype. Comment on it below.

Re: Spyroforum Fan Game!

I like ideas 1 and 2. Now I'm not making the story or anything, but I just had to get my idea out there smile

Timeline: Shortly after YotD

During a party (at somewhere high) for the discovery of a "Super Gem" (the dragons from the first game, maybe with some of Spyro's friends from the 2nd/3rd as well are there), Gnasty froze all the Adult Dragons again, but this time he made the mistake of coming in person. Gnasty's stupid, I'm pretty sure. Gnasty realises the mistake, he tries to run, but fall's off a cliff behind him, into white nothing(?) (like Ripto falling off the cliff after the boss battle with Gulp). Spyro hear's Ripto yelling somewhere near, and he turn's a corner, and see's Ripto. [Insert conversation where Ripto awkwardly admit's he lost his scepter after absorbing some of the "Super Gem's" power, and lost it to [new enemy that Ripto created] that betrayed Ripto, along with all of his other new minions, all suddenly.] Spyro says that the power could destroy everything, including the user, if the user was not careful. Ripto agree's, and yell's at Spyro to get it back. Spyro say's that Ripto will not get it back when Spyro get's to it. Ripto panikly yell's that he doesn't care, and to just not let him get destroyed. Spyro ask's why he should let Ripto go, and that things don't add up. Ripto give's Spyro [insert something very useful], and run's off.
Each world would have a single frozen Dragon that, when freed, will reveal a return home portal. In each boss world would have brand-new bosses wielding a little power from the Super Gem, that, when defeated, would have a short message for Spyro, giving clues to the new antagonist.
When Spyro reach's the final boss, there's Ripto fighting the new antagonist, and Spyro entering the arena would distract Ripto, and Ripto would get knocked down. Spyro attack's [new guy], and Ripto hide's in/on some kind of flying thing, and help's out from above during the battle, throwing sheep, powerup orbs (as [new guy] would only be able to be hurt by powerups), ect. When Spyro finish's off [new guy], Ripto grab's his scepter [new guy] was holding, summon's his now under control minions, and is about is kill Spyro, thinking himself smart, when one of Spyro's friends come's by with the powerless Super Gem, and absorb's the power back, then help's Spyro make a quick escape.

...I just realised I used up about 2 hours of my time writing this... o.O

Re: Spyroforum Fan Game!

Does anyone know of a free htlm5 game tutorial(for Windows, not Mac)? I'd like to learn more about the tool the programmers will be using.

I like the idea Burst. And I like the idea of young writers, they keep things imaginative and fresh. Ever heard of Axe Cop? A writer can also mean a concept writer too. So grammar and such would be the responsibility of the narrative and dialogue writer, such as myself.

By the way, I support having voice acting, Spyro's dialogue is more viseral when spoken, and we have a few volunteers(can anyone load up a clip of their best Spyro impersonation?). I think it would be easy to add, and I think text only didn't flow well in Spyro Orange, an action game, anyway.

The demo is fantastic, Sheep! Well done! Yes it is simple and that is ok. Can you add item collection next? And sound effects?
I noticed while you have a sidecrolling sprite there is no gravity, is that something you can easily add? If not perhaps we should make a top down game... and that may BE the simpler option. Spyro could jump over chasms and lava, and change to a gliding sprite with a maximum timer before turning back to walking, or when glide button is released.

spyrooverhead_zps160c8586.png

This is what I see as possible based on Sheep's prototype. No gravity, it's not isometric either. Might this be better than sidecroller, in addition to not needing gravity? Better for exploration?

Re: Spyroforum Fan Game!

My "prototype" wasn't intended as a prototype for the actual game, just as a sort of testing environment when making things like keyboard input, drawing functions and a audio/sound system. But yes, adding gravity would be as simple as giving Spyro a yspeed(for movement along the y-axis) variable, and each step add a small value to this variable before adding yspeed to Spyro's y coordinate. Adding collision with a level would be slightly less simple.
Sound effects is the next thing I'm planning to add, and Gekoncze has added mouse support smile

I like both 1. and 2. of your story idead, Radspyro!

My enthusiasm gets ahead of me, but is no sweat I draw concepts like that. Perhaps we could meet up (all of us participating) for an hour a day in the chat? To allow for more free flowing communication. I am pacific (GMT -8). I could meet up almost anytime if scheduled in advance smile

Re: Spyroforum Fan Game!

Sorry I haven't actually composed any music yet, I was having some trouble in FL and I've also been at my dad's house this weekend. I come back wednesday, so I'll try to compose a track by the end of the week, hopefully. I've been pretty lazy, lately. Trying to recreate the original Spyro sound is harder than you'd think.

Re: Spyroforum Fan Game!

Thanks for the complement GameBoyBlue. I have great ideas all the time. I just have a small bit of trouble with putting it together into an actual written story. I wrote this a few months ago: http://www.spyroforum.com/viewtopic.php?pid=409693 I don't have much time to write stuff like that, so I haven't for a few months. I don't know if I'll get back to it at all. Maybe. Probably not.

Re: Spyroforum Fan Game!

GameBoyBlue, since people seem to like both ideas, I wouldn't mind combining them somehow. The dragons would get hypnotized by a new/old foe, and perhaps Gnasty is the only one who can help out - But on top of saving the dragons, Spyro needs to do some favors for Gnasty (which could perhaps weave in with the dragon saving - Maybe each boss dragon is guarding a Gnorc)?

Re: Spyroforum Fan Game!

Perhaps the giant gem is being used by the new villain to control the dragons.

I'm going to offer everyone meet up in chat in 1 hour from this post. If you see this and it's too late, please let me know a time that would be better for you.

I think more than story, we need to iron out the gameplay. I personally favor overhead 2d over sidecroller 2d, and I'd like to talk about that with the programmers, or who ever shows up.

http://www.spyrochat.com/

If we have sidescrolling, the game is more likely going to be about exploring caves, jumping on rooftops and mountaintops, that kind of thing. If its overhead, we'll be able to have more of the traditional environments.

Re: Spyroforum Fan Game!

Yes I was an hour early and just taking a peak.

Alright here is what was discussed on the SFG Meeting of 6/17/2014 on http://www.spyrochat.com/

We voted on sidescroller or overhead

gameboyblue: overhead
gekoncze: sidescrolling
flapjacks: sidescrolling
searsburst: sidescrolling
neoreaper: sidescrolling

While this only represents 5 of 19(13 without QA) of the team, it represents 2 of the 3 programmers. Both wanted sidescroller, and based on sheep's explanation of 'how easy' it is to add gravity, I'm assuming he wants sidescroller aswell.

If our programmers prefer sidercroller, I think we should allow them to work with the style they are most comfortable and passionate to work on. So I will change my vote to sidescroller aswell.

Any thoughts?

We are planning to meet again tomorrow, 3 hours earlier than the time of this post(initial, not edit). 1PM PST, 4PM EST

Could sheep or geko get a gravity update of the prototype up? With like a floor and platform to jump on? I'm sure we want to hear everyone's opinion on overhead vs sidescroller, yet if gravity can be added easily.... why not have a look?

Re: Spyroforum Fan Game!

If we make a sidescroller, it may end up looking better than Spyro Orange as result of the medium we are using. If not as long as that game. It's fitting, Spyro was created to be something to test the playstation's hardware, now Spyro is helping test a fan community to make an easily accessible web game.

I'd hope it'll look better than Spyro Orange; the faces in that game still give me nightmares.

Re: Spyroforum Fan Game!

I'm only on Q&A team but anyway I also think sidescroller is better. It offers more platforming than top view (And platforming is what I expect from a Spyro game). But as I am only in Q&A I leave the decision to programmers big_smile

So here was Sheep's concept for terrain. We could have floating platforms like these like those seen in Dream Weavers and various other worlds.

Storm, would you put Sheep's newest demo/prototype in the OP, for quick reference to our groups most current work? It maybe nice to have a section for that for QAs, people checking it out, or for people on the team to be sure to see the newest items!

It seems Sheep has a lot to offer, not only in programming, but also art, assuming this was made himself.

Looking good.

Also, I'll try to get a more complete version of the story soon. Has anyone been thinking about what types of levels we'll be having yet? Returning to the Dragon Realms, or a brand new world?

Re: Spyroforum Fan Game!

Great, Gekoncze smile
I added a grid terrain and camera object to your gravity:
http://host-a.net/u/Greenblizzard/Spyro … tforms.zip
I commented out your screen edge collision and replaced it with some code to collide with the terrain. Not entirely sure if how I made the view affect drawn things was the best way to do it, but meh tongue

I'm in favor for sidescrolling of some kind, but I do like GameBoyBlues top-down concept. It's much better suited for the free-roaming and exploration from the 3d games, but the platforming would suffer, and I'm personally not very comfortable with how top-down(completely top-down, not like A Link to the Past etc, I like those) looks in general.

GameBoyBlue: Yes, I made that, except for the stone texture, which I could have made myself, but I just wanted to make the illustration really quick tongue

RadSpyro: I certainly want something that at least looks similar to the Dragon Realms.
