How good do you think this game is on its own?
I noticed that whenever Spyro is mentioned as an example of a great 3D platformer, people always either discuss the trilogy as a whole or only mention the sequels as the defining games for the series while other franchises like Mario, Crash, Zelda Sonic, etc are always remembered for their first outings. Plus, ironically, I've seen alot of reviewers bash this game for simplicity and calling it "average" and "underwhelming", then only doing a heel-face-turn and calling it a great game once they finish playing the post-insomniac titles. It doesn't make sense how an "average" game could end up being so popular and considered one of the best games on a system like the PS1 as shown here?
So my question is, if Spyro the Dragon was the only Spyro game ever made, would you have become a fan? Do you think it would have spawned the level of popularity that it had? How good do you think this game is in its own right?

To be honest, we're all here PARTIALLY because of nostalgy. But at it's own, i think that Spyro was still a great platformer.
Never ask what I'd do for a klondike bar. No one wants to go down that road.
