All Talk Sparx vs. Action Sparx

Does anyone think that Sparx isn't really playing a big enough role in the spyro games? In the beginning games and up through to AHT, sparx represented spyro's health. Now in ANB, sparx is nothing but just a commentator and a comedian. So other than acting as a critic and a joker, there really wasn't any point in sparx being in this game. So, do you think sparx should be getting in on the action more and be equipped with some powers as well like in AHT where you could play as sparx when there were small holes in the walls/rocks and he could blast enemies that got in his way? I think sparx should be given some powers too because the game would definitely be much more enjoyable if sparx had powers to blast and pummel enemies into the ground just like spyro. What do you think?

Re: All Talk Sparx vs. Action Sparx

I agree. There needs to be more to him then just a wise craking gnat. They talk about this on sierra all the time. Also, you ever notice, that about 75% of the time, David Spade wasn't doing the role justice? He needed to put more emotion into it, and that's why Sierra's not using him anymore.

Re: All Talk Sparx vs. Action Sparx

In the old Spyro's, he actually served a useful purpose as an active member of the team. The new Spyro's have just turned him into an annoying *bleep*.

I liked the non-talking buzzing Sparx better. I hate what they've done to him.

Re: All Talk Sparx vs. Action Sparx

Though some of his lines were funny, he did get quite annoying after some time. It was nice when he actually served a purpose, but now he's all talk and no bite.
Pretty useless if you ask me.

Exactly.
And he doesn't even look like a dragonfly anymore... and his parents?! Sparx isn't even supposed to have parents!!

Re: All Talk Sparx vs. Action Sparx

I haven't played ANB yet, actually. But Sparx only talking sounds useless and I think most of his levels in the older games were fun (besides the major purpose he served).

I don't think they should give a million different powers to Sparx and make him almost as good as Spyro, but maybe give him a few new moves to help Spyro out might be cool.

But I still want him to be all witty and everything. He was awesome in ANB. tongue

Yea, awesome at being funny and not doing anything to help spyro. Just wish he had powers like laser shooting in AHT.

Re: All Talk Sparx vs. Action Sparx

We have to bear in mind that his role in the series had to get a change due to Spyro now having a separate health bar. Heck, he even had a health bar in Shadow Legacy, and Sparx was completely useless and had very few lines at all, and even if he did speak he was mainly just sticking up for his dragon companion. In a place where a serious crisis is occurring (i.e. a potential rise of the Dark Master), there is bound to be something witty to help make the game not fall into the direction of "too upsetting to play from start to finish", so I think the witty Sparx worked well in A New Beginning.

Nevertheless, I agree that he could do with gradually building character to become just as courageous as Spyro. I mean, let's take another franchise for that kind of comparison.

In terms of reaction to incoming enemies, Sparx marks a similarity to Murray, the pink hippo in the Sly Cooper videogames. In the first game (Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus), Murray is just seen as a light-hearted van driver, whom like Sparx shows fear when he faces an enemy ambush (hence him needed cover fire from Sly in a turret during his missions). And then as the series progresses we see him become a confident fighting machine as well as becoming a soulsearcher in Australia. By the time of the third game (Honor Among Thieves), Murray is seen as one of the most worthwhile characters in the Cooper Gang.

My conclusion is thus: Sparx may have started out as a wisecracking dragonfly with no need to be around, but I'm sure he will gain some additional character development that will make him more worthwhile as the trilogy develops.

Re: All Talk Sparx vs. Action Sparx

Sparx is heaps cool in old games.
He explains speedways
He Takes hits for spyro
In spyro 3 he had 4 playable stages
he collects games
He's a good sidekick, i like his crazy look and his buzzing noices.
He was really cute and cool in the old spyro games, now hes just plain annoying.
This is why i'm debating whether sparx should talk in my spyro game (if i ever make one)

Re: All Talk Sparx vs. Action Sparx

It kinda hurts being a sidekick. Sparks just spits "sparks" out in the other games. What else can he do? He's better off buzzing out what he says than talk cleanly. I do like Sparks sarcasm a bit. I'd keep it but not too much.

Re: All Talk Sparx vs. Action Sparx

i keep on telling people, all it needs is a new collectable, new minigames, better graphics, new characters, maybe a bit harder, and maybe some new abilities.
then spyro would be great

Re: All Talk Sparx vs. Action Sparx

A Hero's Tail had all that. And that made me lose a lot of hope with the Spyro series, my reasoning being the complete change in style to something ridiculously kiddish, the lack of Stewart Copeland and the regular voice actors, changes in personality that came out of nowhere, lack of development FOR those new characters (Ember, Flame, Blink... Red might be an exception) and the fact that Spyro is seen more as an arrogant jerk. So no, a new Spyro game doesn't need additional mini-games, graphic enhancements, new collectibles and whatnot to be good.

I aslo agree with you entirely, thoguht on the final part, I'd like to add, that as long as the items aren't too numerous and aren't extremely difficult to find, then theycan be verry helpfull to the game.

Also, I'm glad that I devloped Ember and Flame's past a bit more when I made my second story. I'm finishing that one tonight.

There you go. I was just proving that it doesn't need improved graphics, new collectibles, new minigames and new characters to be a great game.

Re: All Talk Sparx vs. Action Sparx

I dont know is AHT is a great game or not, i've never tried it, who knows, maybe it is.
But anyhow i hated the characters in AHT, how many dark gems were in AHT? because if there werent much it really isn't a collectable (and you cant count the dragon eggs cause hey we've already had them and why even did those theifs steal it), i hate the idea of spyro being such a Jerk, i never supported a kiddish game and what are the minigames like in AHT??

Re: All Talk Sparx vs. Action Sparx

Well I can't help Eternal Night cause I too haven't played Hero's Tail yet, though I know a lot about it from video footage from The likes of Dazzy and Rexy along with quite a few others.

If they made Sparx a little more a part of the game I would be less annoyed by the fact he is...different.
