The Legend of Spyro: The Rise of the Golems

Story Summary: In a world where the Golems of the Deep roam free, in which the legacy of dragonkind is threatened, a band of survivors learn that a certain purple dragon with abilities others cannot wield may save their world from destruction and help them to survive.

Disclaimer: I do not own Spyro and other characters from the Spyro the Dragon and the Legend of Spyro series. Some of the young dragons that are in the story are grown-up, but are baby dragons from the Year of the Dragon game.

Re: The Legend of Spyro: The Rise of the Golems

Prologue

Our world has been devastated for over twelve years...overruned and nearly dominated by the Golems of the Deep, who were brought back from the depths of the earth to cause destruction through the dark magic of the long-dead Dark Master, Malefor. Ever since that day, the Golems began rampaging around the world, destroying and killing anything they come across and left no stone unturned in their wake. They kept doing this, killing and destroying, until the world nearly became nothing but a wasteland of fire and ash. Food and water became scarce as the flames and lava seared and dried up almost every bit of life and substance we need to survive.

Only a small group of us survived the chaos, taking refuge in the only place the Golems never knew about, within the endless caves and tunnels of the Underground City. Every day we live in fear of our hiding place being discovered and being killed and devoured by the Golems. We are forced to go aboveground to look and hunt for food, risking our lives for the ones that are in need. Some of us barely make it back safe and sound, while others weren't so fortunate.

Day after day, we're starting to loose hope...

The Golems grow more furious in trying to find us, while we're becoming desperate to obtain enough food for us to remain underground long enough to avoid them.

Though I've heard stories, rumors, and legends, of another purple dragon that was born somewhere in the world. Destined to save our dying world from becoming a cursed haven for the Golems of the Deep. However, most of us have doubts that he or she will end up like the deceased first purple dragon and use the Golems to destroy the world completely and wipe us out from the face of the earth like he did long ago. Whether he or she is alive or dead...we may never know, but one thing's for sure...

Our world is going to end...and life must go on...for all of us...

The Legend of Spyro: The Rise of the Golems

Chapter 1

Within the Burned Lands...

Rivers of lava flowed down through the mountainous regions of the lands, with geysers of lava shots out from the shore, spraying wildly around their positions. Down at ground level, the air was too thick with the ash lingering about, though the inhabitants were able to live in these harsh conditions. Unfortunately, the only times they are reminded of their once lushful and beautiful planet was when they are hitching a ride on the grass-filled and environment-like backs of the Golems that are gentle and non-threatening. Having been hunting and living in the Burned Lands for years since the Golems of the Deep were resurrected, they struggled to survive in their now alternate and slowly dying world where the monsters still lurk around on every corner.

Out in the thick-aired, open landscape of the Burned Lands, a small group of dragons circled around a dangerous Lava Worm, trying to overpower it after catching it alone.

A small and black, young dragoness, named Cynder, lead the group of young females their attack on the Lava Worm. She had a beak-like snout that was thinner than her head and had shiny gray-black scales that are said to almost gleam, along with with a red scaley underbelly. She has six, white horns on her head: two short ones at the bottom of her head next to her neck, another two short ones on the sides of her head, and finally, two longer horns on top of her head. A connected ridge of gray spikes grew from the back of Cynder's head until it stopped near the base of her neck. Her wings came out of her shoulders, starting out thin and widening greatly at the first joint and are of moderate length for her size with a spike growing inwards from the first joint of her wings. Her tail was longer in length than the other dragon's, ending with a leaf-shaped bony blade. A silver helmet glistened around most of Cynder's head, marked with curled lines crafted along with a pair of large eye sockets for the black dragoness to see with her green, misty-gray eyes, also leaving the back of her head bare for her six horns to be visible. She was also equipped with a pair of silver bracers placed around her front ankles, along with a silver plate of armor on her back to protect her if she was attacked from behind.

Ember, a pink dragon just about Cynder's size, circled cautiously around the Lava Worm, wearing a yellow necklace around her neck that ended with a heart-shaped pendant. She had a yellow tan scaley underbelly and has two rows of purple crests: one row appears on the top of her head to the back of it, and the other grows from the middle of her tail and ending near her heart-shaped spade. Yellow horns grew out from the sides of her head, curving upwards, as her pink wings were folded gently against her body. She wore a slender gold helmet with green layers of emerald around the circular edge of the gear, as well as wearing a pair of bracers around her front ankles with the same color as her helmet, and a yellow plate of armor placed on the middle of her tail.

A young blue dragoness named Ami, a little smaller than Cynder, kept a safe distance from the Lava Worm, cautiously looking for a weak point. She wore dark purple helmet that was a little too big for her head, as it clattered gently against her white horns. Purple bracers clicked against her front ankles as it walked on the warm, hard surface, and her wings were purple with their webbing lighter than her scale color.

The fourth dragoness, a young Magic Crafter named Rikki, was growling at the Lava Worm to try and catch its full attention. Her scales were dark blue with a large mystical symbol marked on her back. Her scaley underside was green, but suddenly changed to purple starting from the base of her tail until it ended near the tip of the tail. The skull of a long-dead Lava Worm was worn on Rikki's head, serving as her helmet, as the bones of its spikey backbone served as her back protection in battle.

The fifth and last dragoness, a young Dream Weaver named Ruby, was around Rikki's age and height, and was her close and constant companion. Her scales were slivery gray, and her horns were dark gray. She wore a solid brown helmet, and brown bracers were placed on her front ankles as part of her armor. The young Dream Weaver circled the Lava Worm along with Cynder and Ember to try and confuse the Worm.

These five dragons were doing their best to overpower this large specimen of Lava Worm to bring it back to their underground home, where they can eat safely along with the others that are waiting.

Rikki growled softly, then hurled herself at the Lava Worm with a pump of her wings, aiming for the Worm's exposed underbelly. However, the Lava Worm raised and lashed out its sharp pincers, knocking the young Magic Crafter away, only to see her flipping over and landing on the ground on her four paws without further injury. The Lava Worm then spewed out a dart of lava at Rikki, and the little Magic Crafter responded by leaping out of the dart's aim.

Before the Worm could attack any further, it was suddenly tackled to the side as Cynder did a swift full-body tackle right into its chest and quickly sank her toothy beak into the Worm's exposed underbelly. The Lava Worm screeched and groaned in agony, then started swiping its pincers across Cynder's helmet to make her release her death grip on its weak spot, but the black dragoness refused to release her kill. Ember, Rikki, Ruby, and Ami quickly joined in on the attack and latched onto the Lava Worm for dear life, grabbing the nearest flesh they could get their claws and teeth on. After what it seems to have been a long battle, a loud, dying shrill pierced the ash-filled air.

The lifeless body of the Lava Worm finally slumped to the ground, and Cynder and Ember slowly stepped off their kill, with Rikki, Ruby, and Ami still holding their death grip on the Worm to make sure it's fully dead.

"It put up a good fight." Cynder breathed, wiping the Worm's blood from her beak with a quick wipe of her paw.

Ember nodded and said, "Yeah, it nearly bit me a couple of times too."

"This one's heavy..." Rikki grunted, lifting up the Lava Worm on her back with the assistance of Ami and Ruby.

Ruby remarked with a giggle, holding the Worm up with her shoulders as Ember and Ami lifted it up, "Yeah, but it's big enough to fill us all up till tomorrow."

"Let's hurry." Cynder announced, "The sooner we reach the underground city of Warfang, the better. I bet the boys are whining by now."

With a quick heave, Ember, Rikki, Ruby, and Ami lifted the heavy dead Lava Worm off the ground and steadily began making their way through the burned landscape as quickly as they could.

Cynder walked forward to follow the girls, but then stopped in her tracks and slowly turned her to the lava filled mountains that laid in the far distance. She stared at it for a moment, then sighed deeply, "How long are we going to live like this...?" The black dragoness then followed her friends, but trailed a little, though still keeping up with them.

Eventually, the small group came across a small canyon with a few paths and turns. Still ahead of Cynder, Ember, Rikki, Ruby, and Ami passed underneath an arch that stood above them in the canyon, and eventually emerged from the shadows to move on. After a few minutes of silence, Ami decided to start a conversation. "You know, this Lava Worm is a lot bigger than the others we've killed." She said.

"It's like a crab and a lobster." Rikki stated, "The longer it lives, the bigger it grows." She moaned as she felt the weight of the dead Lava Worm weighing down on her back, "Are we close to the Underground City yet? This kill's getting heavy."

Ember lifted the Lava Worm up a little for Rikki to rise up and groaned, "In times like this, the Ancestors could've built the ruins a little closer."

A few yards behind the conversing group, as Cynder was just walking out from beneath the arch, still in deep thought, when a dark shadow slowly loomed over the back of the black dragoness as the massive head of a magma, snake-like Golem leaned down from atop of the arch and leered at Cynder from behind. Its sinuous body is made mostly out of molten rock, its underbelly was composed only of magma, and two pair of black crystals, radiating with dark magic, were sticking out of its forehead, gleaming and pulsing with an evil and sinister glow. On the top side of its body behind the dark crystal head spikes, grass and lush greenery grew vividly on the back of the snake golem, showing that the monster might had been living above ground long enough for plant life to grow on its back where the heat is not too severe. Its eyes gleamed like orbs of the flames of amber, though they were lifeless and displayed only anger and rage, and its tail ended with a molten rock, feathered-like formation, dotted with dark crystal spikes that pulsed along with the dark horns on the Golem's head.

A low hiss escaped the jaws of the Snake Golem as it slowly opened its mouth to reveal a pair of long fangs made purely out of lava...

Cynder perked up, hearing the hiss emiting softly from behind her, and whipped her head around only to be knocked backwards when the Golem pushed her back with its nose to knock her off-balance. The black dragoness stumbled backwards on a few ledges that laid behind her, eventually crashing on the ground on her side at the bottom of the canyon where the others are.

Ember, Rikki, Ami, and Ruby turned their heads to Cynder, who was climbing back to her feet, only to widened their eyes in terror when they saw the Snake Golem advancing towards them through the canyon. The Lava Golem hissed aggressively, its eyes sharply following Cynder's every move as she slowly stalked backwards to keep a safe distance from the Golem.

Cynder kept her eyes on the Snake Golem as she continued step away from it. She looked back at the corner of her to Ember and ordered calmly, "Ember, take the girls and the Worm and run for it. I'll lead the Golem away, and meet you guys back at the Underground City."

"Cynder, you're not going to do anything foolish, are you?" Ember responded from a safe distance.

The black dragoness replied, "Ancestors forbid." With a quick leap, Cynder pumped her wings and took to the air, soaring by the Snake Golem's head at a very low altitude to tempt the snake to follow her. Just as she predicted, the Snake Golem's head turned around to follow Cynder before it quickly trailed after her at alarming speed.

Seeing the Snake Golem pursue Cynder, Ember quickly urged Rikki, Ami, and Ruby to carry their Lava Worm kill as fast as they could to their destination, making their way through the Burned Lands to get to their destination before anything other Golems comes along...

00000

A few miles away, Cynder flew swiftly around the corners and ledges of the black-soiled canyon she was in with the Snake Golem in hot pursuit. The black dragoness looked back to the Golem at the corner of her eye, and saw the beast hissing out to her while briefly showing its fangs. She scoffed softly and resumed flying away as fast as she could to loose the Snake Golem. However, when Cynder took a sharp turn, she suddenly stopped in mid-flight and landed on the ground, finding herself looking straight at the face of a cliff and noticing a large pile of rocks lying against the rocky wall in front of her.

"Great..." The black dragoness muttered, realizing she was cornered. She then turned her head around and saw the Snake Golem slithering threatenly towards her out from behind the corner of the canyon, ready to attack.

Seeing Cynder cornered by a cliff face, the Snake Golem slowly slinked its way towards the black dragoness until it stopped in its tracks. It kept a short distance from Cynder while keeping its eyes on her, its head lifted high above its body, poised and ready to strike at the black dragoness with its fangs.

Cynder slowly got into her fighting stance, spreading open her wings and her tail lashing about behind her.

As it kept its deadly gaze on Cynder, the Snake Golem opened its toothy jaws and bellowed out a screeching hiss that was loud enough to shake the earth, then suddenly struck its fangs out at the black dragoness. Cynder quickly jumped to the left side of the canyon, narrowly avoiding the deadly bite from the Snake Golem as she glared at the monster, ready to dodge another bite attempt. As the black dragoness stalked about slowly, the Snake Golem kept its eyes solid on Cynder, its head slowly moving to the left as it followed her every move.

Suddenly, the Snake Golem roared again, signaling Cynder of its next move. As the Golem struck its fangs forward for Cynder again, the black dragoness quickly veered out of the way just in time to see the Golem smashing its head into the pile of rocks that laid behind her and also inflicting damage to the horns of dark crystal on its forehead that was connected to its brain. The Snake Golem screeched and writhed in agony, quickly drawing its head back and shook it furiously to shake off the pain, then returned focusing its attention back to Cynder.

"Heh..." Cynder smirked, nearly laughing at the Snake Golem's own cause of injury.

Enraged, the Snake Golem emitted another ground-shaking screech to Cynder and launched its head at the black dragoness with its fangs bared for the killing blow. At the last moment, Cynder's eyes gleamed and she leapt over the head of the Golem with a few pumps of her wings, landing right behind the Golem's dark crystal horns. She then ran down the sinuous length of the Snake Golem's back, bounding across the debris and greenery until she was near the Snake Golem's dark, gem-encrusted tail. As she ran, Cynder concentrated most of her powers of Poison to her tail for her Scorpion Strike technique and slowly felt the venom building up completely within her tail, making it pulse rhythmically in a sickly green glow. With her venom ready to be unleashed, the black dragoness lunged for the snake's dark gem-encrusted tail with a roar and struck it with the poisonous slash of her tail blade, hard enough to break off the dark gems into shards.

Almost instantly, the Snake Golem screeched in agony and reared up violently, lashing its tail about and unexpectedly knocking Cynder off its back in the process.

Cynder was flung straight into the air for a short moment, a bit dazed, as she started to fall towards the ground. Fortunately, she quickly flipped over and landed on the ashy ground on her four paws. She resumed glaring at the Snake Golem, her wings flared open as she stood in front of the enraged monster. The black dragoness quickly and briefly glanced back to the pile of rocks that laid behind her against the cliff, then stood in front of the pile before focusing her attention back to the Snake Golem. A smirk was formed on the corner of her mouth, as she knew what she was planning to do when the Golem strikes again.

Hissing loudly, the Snake Golem bared its sharp fangs and launched them for Cynder again, but the black dragoness leapt out of the way, tricking the Golem to strike its deadly head straight for the rocks again. The Snake Golem painfully slammed its head into the cluster of rocks again just as Cynder predicted and quickly drew it back to screech in pain, this time causing the rocks to crumble down from the pile to reveal a hidden passageway.

Cynder looked back and saw the passageway. Noticing how deep in it was, she figured it would possibly lead somewhere. Without hesitation, she turned and quickly ran towards the cave.

As the black dragoness scurried into the mouth of the passageway, the Snake Golem slithered after Cynder to follow her into the passage, its fangs bared to strike again. However, it stopped at the entrance and looked up, quickly drawing its head back in time to see a few large rocks crumbling down from the top of the cliff by the snake's headbutt , as well as completely blocking the cave Cynder went into. Once the landslide subsided, the Snake Golem hissed angrily while glaring into the cave through the tiny spaces between the rocks. Emiting a screeching hiss of rage, the Snake Golem turned and slithered away, disappearing into the vast open landscape of the canyon to find other prey...
