Malefor's Name Origin (possibility)

I've just had a thought...

I don't know if anyone's heard the Evanescence song Whisper, but at the end there is a latin chant that goes, Servatis a periculum, servatis a maleficum meaning Save us from danger, save us from evil.

Maleficum (meaning evil) sounds almost identical to Malefor, so do you think that his name derives from that?

What do you lot think? xx

Re: Malefor's Name Origin (possibility)

Yeah, there are a few similar words that denote something being bad, and it's safe to say that served as the base for "Malefor".

Could be malificium, but it's probably from malicious or malice. Or both.

Malificium? What does that mean? Something similar to evil obviously.

Yeah malice means evil in a way...

btw, Evanessence ROCKS

Yeah I know. They're my third favourite (after Within Temptation - don't hurt me Aicebo! - and Nightwish).

Re: Malefor's Name Origin (possibility)

Well, the prefix "Mal" means "bad" so that might have something to do with it.

Re: Malefor's Name Origin (possibility)

Stand back! I know Latin!

Malus does mean bad or evil. Also, I can't believe I know Latin.

Re: Malefor's Name Origin (possibility)

well, if we look for the root word, i have to guess malefor comes from malevolent (i'm guessing evil, or wrong doer. or something)

Yeah I once thought that but that was before I heard the song. Now I have two views!

Re: Malefor's Name Origin (possibility)

To be honest, it reminds me of the mythological demon and a duke of Hell, Valefar. Plus, break his name down into parts. Mal is in the romance languages, meaning "bad" or "evil (male in Italian, for evil, mal in Spanish and French for evil)." "E" is Italian for "and," and "for" stems off of the Italian word "forte" and the French word "fort," meaning strong. It could also stem from the Italian word for "strength;" forza (strength in French is force). So, to break his name down word by word, it would be "Evil and strong," in Italian, or "Evil strength." It would also be the same in French.

I take French and Spanish in high school, and I've also been looking into Italian on the side.

Re: Malefor's Name Origin (possibility)

It may sound a little out of the water here, but here goes...

Some half-talented writer thought it sounded cool. It has no real meaning.

On a side note, the first summonable aeon to join your party in Final Fantasy X is called Valefor as default. He's not very good, Shiva or Bahamut are seriously superior.

Re: Malefor's Name Origin (possibility)

Ha ha! I used to think that Aceedwin, but it sounds too cool to just be made up. Plus it's been linked with many references on this topic.

Valefor... that probably means something else. Either that or it has the same meaning but they just wanted it to rhyme.

Good ideas though.  wink

I didn't know that Malefor was the Dark Master's name until I saw previews for DotD.  roll

I just thought it was a cool name for a mountain.

Re: Malefor's Name Origin (possibility)

Malefor isn't cool. It's much less cool than, say, Sauron.
