Spyro to go back to the old loved dragon?
Just wanted to post my thoughts on this subject of what will happen to Spyro.
Something that completely confuses me is the fact that Spyro's games were loved by the majority back in the playstation one days, that was because the games were amazing. Loved worldwide.
But then the fomula changed, Spyro lost a lot of fans because of the different direction he took. The majority who loved Spyro are now the minority. I mean, if the old games were re-made and refreshed, if they were pulled off well by the developers and makers then they would be very fun games, they would have character like they used to and they would be lovable.
Surely it's obvious to see by reviews, the loss of fans etc etc. I'm not saying the new games are awful, it's just there not what Spyro should be and it's obvious. The minority could easily be turned in to the majority again with an amazing Spyro game.
Thanks and remember this is an opinion.

Re: Spyro to go back to the old loved dragon?
I'm one of the new likers, but the problem is that now everyone is all in this "1st Person Shooter games [like Halo and Gears of War] and Sport Games [like Madden]" junk now. That's also could be the cause of it.
Back then, why Spyro was so popular because those games wasn't made, another reason why we lost most of the Spyro population.

Re: Spyro to go back to the old loved dragon?
Guess I would be a new liker of the series too wasn't really into spyro until april of this year mainly due to only having nintendo systems so i pretty much ignored the series until the lack of wii games so I started trying different series i normally didn't play and Spyro was one of them was addicted instantly. I'm a Big platform game fan and well basically thats most of the titles I play. I'd definitely like to see spyro return to his original series but with devlopers who excel at platform type games but since the series went through a reboot its just not gonna happen.

Re: Spyro to go back to the old loved dragon?
I like the new Spyro games but I LOVED the original three for the PS1. I think it would be amazing for the originals to be remade. |3 Especially if they added Cynder and the Guardians into the remake somehow. I think a possible reason for the change was to keep the original followers. Since the original fans were growing up, they changed Spyro in hopes of making the change in video game tastes of the fans. That's just my opinion though. I still would like to have the old platformer Spyro games back though.

same as Xander, the new ones have got a certain draw to them, even though I'm generally an old!Spyro supporter if I'm made to choose
again, same as Xander, it'd be cool if they could add Cynder and the Guardians to the mix somehow, though I don't think the originals should be tainted with them
oh let's just face it; a mixture of Insomniac Spyro platforming and characters from TLoS would be good, doncha think?

Well, I don't particularly like the characters in LoS...I think the old ones were much more lovable.

perhaps I should have been more specific, since I don't like a lot of the new characters either
I quite like the dragon Guardians and depending on my mood, I either tolerated or liked Cynder
I also liked Flame and Ember from AHT XD shoot me now
on the other hand, TLoS Spyro is a whiny bugger >.> and don't even get me started on how much I prefer classic Hunter to TLoS Hunter

Re: Spyro to go back to the old loved dragon?
LoS Spyro himself was my biggest gripe about the characters. He really had no personality. It was always I-must-do-this-it's-my-destiny or I-must-always-do-the-right-thing-because-I'm-a-boring-and-dry-Gary-Stu. The whole thing was just filled with cliches.
As for Sparx, it was kind of a love-hate relationship. I loved how he pointed out the cliches ("Oh, great, I was afraid we were going to have to spend the rest of the night without any more DOOM!") but it did get old. When that's all that ever comes out of his mouth (and he talks a lot), it stops being funny and starts being downright annoying. I think Spyro should have had a less extreme version of Sparx's personality anyway; it would have made the games much more tolerable.

I agree with you there. Sparx was alright in the Eternal Night I suppose, but in the others he was so...darn...annoying!

Sparx was one of the things i liked about TLOS. But I only wished Spyro would have had sparx personality, and sparx was buzzing, or had spyro's personality.

I agree big time. The whole Spyro being the whole I-have-to-because-I-was-born-for-it-and-I-am-always-the-hero-and-you-are-not really did get annoying. If they wrote the characters a little better the game would have been pretty decent. I think there could have been a double version of the game. You know in games like Crash Team Racing they have a adventure mode and then a time trial mode... I think it would have been cool of they had the adventure version and then a "Original" like version. Collect the gems and kick butt with headbash and all those original goodies. The new spyro powers are wayyyy tooo OP imo. I mean come on. How much can you overdo beating things up? You have physical attacks and then you get "Lightning Fury" and all this and that... Ugh. That almost makes me think of hacking some RPG, getting uber stats so you 1 shot everything. *Cough* guilty *Cough* Diablo 2 *cough*.

Re: Spyro to go back to the old loved dragon?
I don't think people realize that entertainment demand changes. What would have worked very well in 1998 wouldn't work at all in 2008. If the original spyro game hadn't been released until 2008 (even with upgraded graphics) No one would have touched it. Back in the day it was an awesome game, I still remember it being one of the very first video games I ever played that wasn't 2D (I had a NES until PS1 was old news)
I adored the old games, and I adore the new games. Times change, and the story needs to change to get new fan base. You can't really on the old fan base to keep it working. Yes a lot of people stick to it, but more grow out of it, or loss interest. This way we get more and more Spyro fans giving the series new life.
In truth, people of today's market are much different to impress then the older market. use to be all you needed was a cute story and lovable characters, now that only works when you waaaay over do it.
I do wish they would add back in some of the original gameplay, but in truth I like playing the new spyro games more then the old ones. The old ones may have been more well thought out, and the characters may have been more deep, but gameplay wise, the new Spyro games are rather enjoyable. Enemies propose a real challenge now, rather then a small annoyance, the bosses don't fail epicly, (seriously, Gnasty Gnorc was an awful boss fight you have to admit) even if a lot of them are a bit to easy.
I still get the same feel from the though. They are easy without being to easy, hard without being frustrating, and give you plenty of reasons to explore and replay the game over and over.
Though, if it wasn't for Cynder, I wouldn't even have got into the new Spyro games. I heard of her character, and wanted to play it just to see their relationship play out. I always wanted Spyro to find a girl, and Cynder is exactly what I pictured. ( I think there was a pink dragon in one of the other games, I remember she annoyed the crap out of me. Glad they ditched her)
I typed this at 2am, I doubt I made sense and I am deeply sorry for my blabbering.
That's when I realized this whole world was flawed.
I saw opportunity to live up to my full potential and give everyone in sight and sound the prettiest painting of all time.
A fresh canvas we could work on together, where creativity flows freely and is withheld from no one.

Re: Spyro to go back to the old loved dragon?
I loved Sparx in the LOS series, but Spyro was just at total wet drip. He just mucks around wittering on about his destiny and Cynder. SpyroXCynder was a total no-chemistry relationship - and there's already enough of them. Spyro is meant to be arrogant and cocky, not some boring guy who fights to save the damsel in distress and falls in love, for christ's sake.
I SHIP IT

Re: Spyro to go back to the old loved dragon?
I personally like the newer games rather then the originals. Good story, bit more action, memorable characters (well, the original had them too...). But if they were to go back to the original series, where would they go? I mean, I don't really think they can get any new ideas to an old series...unless the somehow found a way.
Best idea would be a merge of the LoS series with the original, as in have the games take place in the LoS universe but have the events of the Original series take place. LoS's storyline combined with the original's adventure and exploration as well as collecting would do the series good, in my opinion.
And this is coming from someone who creates storylines 24/7...

Re: Spyro to go back to the old loved dragon?
ACtually, all of the characters were sterotypical and the plot was copy-paste of LotR with minor alterations. Everything else came from every other fantasy thing ever made except it lacks the charm that the other had. In all, it just seems...forced and bland
the originals were so much better. Was playing them the other day. Yes you die very quickly but there was so much to explore...and the character's personalities were actually on their way to being well developed!

Re: Spyro to go back to the old loved dragon?
True, the storyline in LoS was based on LotR...but how many other fantasy/adventure games were as well?
Ignitus I enjoyed the most, being someone who is interested in those sort of characters. As for storyline, I didn't really enjoy the originals a lot since every game was like 'bad guy comes and takes ITEM A, enslaves the new character's world, Spyro has to find and grab ITEM A, B, and C to complete the game.' In the first game it was freeing dragons, beating all the levels and collecting gems and eggs. In the second it was getting talismans, beating all the levels and collecting gems and orbs. In the third game it was collecting dragon eggs, and beating all the levels and collecting gems. It was...kinda repetitive. o.o Sure I enjoyed the storyline when I was younger, but now I am a person who is trying to be a game developer, and I consider the storyline to be a main focus.
That and replay value, games must have some replay value.

Well yes, the originals were somewhat straightforward in that direction. But the humor and, as previously stated, character development made up for it.

Exactly.
Not to mention you had the different characters to play as in YotD. You had the Sparx levels, hidden Hunter sections, vehicles to ride, skill points to uncover, find that one gem you missed, beat that skateboarding record...
In the Legend of Spyro it's just fight, cutscene, rinse and repeat. OH! You can level up your abilities, which makes fighting even faster!
Yeah.

Re: Spyro to go back to the old loved dragon?
True. I guess I am more into LoS because it is a darker game. With me being 19 and all and playing games such as Halo, Gears of War, and all those gritty games, I could tell why I am into it. That, and I like Ignitus
But both the original and the LoS have their good sides and bad sides. Can't just say that everything in LoS is bad.
