Why do you think they made spyro purple?

because every 10 thousand years or so a purple dragon is born, i have no clue why they made it purple, probably because its an awesome colour, spyro wouldnt look right if he were green big_smile

I thought everyone knew the answer to this.

Spyro was meant to be green, until they realised that he'd just blend in with some of the levels in the first game (such as the Artisans, Stone Hill etc.). They tried pretty much every colour until they realised the only colour that wouldn't camoflague him was purple. So they made him purple. smile

You can change Spyro's colour in Year of the Dragon, though, which is pretty cool.

yep, as Scarlett-Fear-Dragon said, it's because he was supposed to be green but he blended in too much etc.

and also, because purple stands out! they could have just made him blue or something, but there are a lot of blue dragons. how many other purple dragons do you know of? =P

Is there a slight possibility that after realizing they couldn't color him the same as the background that they decided purple would even the dragon tension in the Spyro character, a character which, in the first game, was just being introduced. I couldn't imagine him being black or red, he would look too demonic.

Would any female here admit to being more interested in the first Spyro game because of his purple color? Not saying it's a only a feminine color, but I can't help but think that it may have expanded the Spyro fanbase to people who are big fans of purple, and not just dragons and platformer games.

Interestingly enough, I don't relate to any of those. My Spyro fandom is kind of a phenomenon.

Because of Spyro, purple is now one of my favorite colors. And I use to hate purple.

Insomniac wanted to restore the awesomeness of purple, which was not an easy task because of Pedosaurus-Rex. Fortunately, a small talking convertible was able to help restore purple's awesomeness.

They wanted to make him memorable. Who would remeber a red or orange dragon. Purple is a rarely used color and since nothing really is purple they wanted to make his be associated with something seen everyday. You name something other than Spyro that's commonly associated to be purple?

I agree with cornys, purple is such an odd, hardly used color. It makes Spyro really unique, and plus, it doesn't tie into just one element, since he's a master of all of them. At least, that's my idea for LoS.
As for the earlier games... like it was said, green would blend too much. Purple stands out. There weren't a lot of purple dragons in the first game... Spyro was always very colorful.

I reckon because its kinda an odd colour, maybe because nobody would expect and awesome dragon to be purple. But i glad they didnt change his colour half way through the series.

Imagine if they'd made Spyro red or black? Or even rainbow?!, Purple is a color you don't usually see on dragons which I like. I do think if they'd made Spyro green, he would of been confusing cause he would blend in with everything else green.

He was going to be green as said however the dev's changed it to purple as it he pretty much Cameo to the background and levels

If he was red, blue, green, or black, people won't recognize him.

But with him purple, people will remember him, like "hey, you remember that purple dragon", then people will get an idea who it is.
