New account verification proceedure
Hey all,
Just been noticing some more spam recently, and have implanted a new account verification procedure.
Any account made prior to March 9th will not be affected.
Starting today, all new users who signup can still signup just how they always were, but when they go to post an image or link in their post for the first time the forum will prompt you to fully activate your account. This new activation procedure will send a text message to your phone with a secret code, and you must enter that code into a text box on the activation page. Its completely automated and should take about 2 minutes maximum to complete. Users can still post regular posts without verification, but if there is a link or image in the post that's the only time it will disallow it and prompt you to verify. Verification is a one time thing, once your verified you will not be asked to verify again.
As I said before, OLD ACCOUNTS ARE NOT AFFECTED.
Have a good one,
SR

What about those that don't have phones?

Re: New account verification proceedure
You probably have a family member who does. I assume if you have a computer, you probably have someone in the family with a cellphone.
Worst comes to worst, shoot me an email.

Re: New account verification proceedure
So it will prompt you for a cell number when you go to post the img/link, I take it? Or is that part of the sign up form? lol 'cause I totally don't remember a phone number for that... lol...
I understand why you're doing it, but wouldn't an email make more sense. Phone activations are so inconvenient, especially since a lot of parents won't be inclined to let their kids borrow their cellphone to sign up for a Spyro site, you know what I mean, right?
Just putting that out there...

They can still sign up and post; they just won't be able to post images or links. If they try, they will be prompted for a cell phone number. It's optional.
As Spyrorocks said, if they don't have access to a cell phone, they can PM him to fully activate the account.

At least the admin here is willing to activate accounts for those who are without cellphones. *cough* Facebook *cough*.
I am kind of neutral on this idea, because email verification is... everyone has a email. Wtf are you doing on the internet without one? Cell phone verification, not everyone has texting. And then you end up with parents who block all inc text messages.

Not run up a bill...
I guess this isn't so bad, but how will this stop spam? Most of the spam is text anyway...

Re: New account verification proceedure
I didn't used to have a texting plan on my phone. It costs extra and some people just don't want to pay for it.
But like I said, I don't think it's a problem since there's an alternate way to verify if you can't get text messages.

I still don't have a text plan. I also got charged $25 for incoming messages received this month from spam and friends who didn't know I was without a text plan.

It will stop spam because automated spam bots don't know that this forum needs text activation in order for them to post links, so their post wont go through. Manual spammers will be annoyed to have to do this activation thing and its not worth it to them, and even if they do their phone number will be blacklisted from ever registering again and its more of a pain in the butt to get a new phone number just to post a message on a forum than anything else.
Just because you receive text messages that may be spam has nothing to do with text message activation.
