Re: Spyro to go back to the old loved dragon?

Wait, LoS has replay value? Explain. Seeing the same cliche cutscenes and fighting the same annoying monkeys over and over again doesn't seem like replay value to me.

And like Scarlett-Fear-Dragon said, LoS is actually quite repetitive. Most video games are; I just found LoS to be worse because there was never any variety in the gameplay.

I said this on a different topic.

I do believe that the LoS games have some replay value.
I love the story, so everytime I play it I seem to see something I didnt notice before.  That's just me though

Re: Spyro to go back to the old loved dragon?

I'd rather nothing happen to Spyro tbh. The franchise died after YoTD and then they did the Crash/Spyro colab which was absolute crap. TLoS was average, we all know what they're going to do next, they're going make another TLoS game to fill the crater sized gaps they left after DoTD. They should make another TLoS game just to fill in the gaps then just leave it, the franchise is dead so leave it. But we all know that Sierra and co. are dumb enough to make more.

Re: Spyro to go back to the old loved dragon?

I believe you lot may be overestimating the adoration for the original games, somewhat.

Even when platformers were in vogue, a lot of people either didn't care for or hated the original games. Possibly due to the fact that it took a staggeringly large amount of elements from the main market leader, in their eyes (as shown from the dip in sales between Spyro 1 and Spyro 2, 5 million units to 3.5 million units!). Platformers are now way out of vogue, but the series is still selling nicely despite this. I'd say the new series is doing about the same as the old series, therefore.

Exactly.

Not to mention you had the different characters to play as in YotD. You had the Sparx levels, hidden Hunter sections, vehicles to ride, skill points to uncover, find that one gem you missed, beat that skateboarding record...

In the Legend of Spyro it's just fight, cutscene, rinse and repeat. OH! You can level up your abilities, which makes fighting even faster!

Yeah.

Great comparison. People these days are just lovers of violence, so it seems.

Re: Spyro to go back to the old loved dragon?

Seeing what happened to both Sonic and Rayman (and Crash Bandicoot with his kart racing), I think going back to the originals is possible but only on places like the PSN, Xbox Live, Steam and maybe the iPod Touch as well. And it would be in Wii graphics (I can dream, can't I?).

This pattern with gaming heroes is emerging and has been done with different IPs which have been feeling down lately - Crash, Sonic and now Rayman (I have found out that he is going back to his original roots just today - http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3180259). It is inevitable that the Spyro series would follow suit but it is a matter of when, not if. Oh, and the TLOS series would thrive with a good developer and will finally be a success.

In other words, brace yourselves for an original Spyro episodic platformer, bound to happen.

Re: Spyro to go back to the old loved dragon?

I'm hoping they would be tri-platform if it happens.  I'm not about to drop $300 for a PS3, no matter how obsessed I am with the Spyro series.

As for the thing about Rayman, I don't think his story rebooted with Raving Rabbids.  Ubi just introduced the Rabbids and got sidetracked until Rayman was no longer Rayman.  Now he is back in his own game.

Kinda like that, Raman raving rabbids was going to restart the new series of games however during early production they decided to change to minigames.

Re: Spyro to go back to the old loved dragon?

If it ever happens, I hope it is light-hearted, with a handful of TLOS-ish dark points in the story. (sorta like the Mother series)
Prior to TLOS, the darkest point in the Spyro series was when the Sorceress wanted to kill all of the dragon eggs.  Ripto was just a Napoleon, and Gnasty just froze the dragons in harmless crystal.  TLOS had suspense, and the classics could benefit with suspense and darkness.

Re: Spyro to go back to the old loved dragon?

I think it would be a great idea for the original Insomniac company to get their old skeletons for the first 3 games and make new, XBox/PS3 smooth skins for them. I don't even think they deserve to be remade, just make the graphics better. That way, its not as much work because they can use all their old movement physics ect just make it look great!

Re: Spyro to go back to the old loved dragon?

Just update the models, animations, sounds, and textures, keep the helpful "D-Jump" and "swim-in-air" glitches in their respective games, fix the completion-preventing glitches, and add a few difficult bonus levels.

Insomniac (unfortinutely) will not be taking Spyro back. They already have their path set... And since Spyro is now a 'major character', there is no way a smaller company like Insomniac could buy him back.

If anything I think they need to do a Spyro and Crash crossover. But done CORRECTLY. (We all know Fusion was fail) If they could have some darkness and suspense with some actual story... Not the story of 'you are the legendary blah blah you are destined to blah blah'. And of course go tri-platform. (PS2, PS3, Xbox) This way people can get a game they will love without dumping $200 for a PS3. I am sorry, but I am not dumping $200 for a PS3 just because there is a new Spyro game.

If they do make a Spyro and Crash crossover next, it would be wise to use the 'older models' with some graphic updating. Crash can get away with using Twinsanity models for the PS2. They are pretty close to the characters as thought up by NaughtyDog. But Spyro will need to be bent around... alot. The only models that are not 'poofy' or frikken ugly are the PS1 models... and they are a little... PS1-ie. tongue
Of course I would like to see a Spyro and Crash crossover done like Twinsanity, (Humour, multiple characters, 'vehicles') but that will never happen.

Hidden text

Part I hate about Twinsanity though, the bugs. That is the only element they would need to keep out of a new crossover.

But most of all the story would need to be unique... Which is what made Twinsanity a memorable Crash game... and not JUST a Crash game.

A big problem with just 'updating' the classics is the problem with it being just a remake. Sure it will fetch a few bucks, but it would not fetch near the amount if they just made a new game that was unique. It is not all too hard to get copies of the first 3 originals... nor is it to get a PSX. Everyone would just go back to the old games instead of getting the 'updated' versions.

Re: Spyro to go back to the old loved dragon?

Does the original owner still own the original games, or just the engine?  Or neither?
Activision should re-release the original games if they have all the rights to do so.

Re: Spyro to go back to the old loved dragon?

Activision is the owner of Spyro and the rights of the franchise now, since Sierra merged with them. If the producer is still the one who did the LoS trilogy, then it's possible the next game might be set in that same universe. Universal Interactive is Vivendi Games, the former coperation Sierra worked for.

Re: Spyro to go back to the old loved dragon?

If the originals are ever remade on one disc, they should add a bunch of bonus levels.  The levels would be full of references to 90's video games (as an added bonus for old fans).  Levels would be based on/inspired by:
Bubsy 3D (the best game ever)
Metal Gear Solid
Crash
Jazz Jackrabbit
Mario
Sonic
Not sure who the bonus boss would be.  Maybe a Missingno.-inspired mass?

If the remake just has the original games with no features or levels added, I don't think that justifies buying it if I already own 2&3.  I'll just get the first one on eBay.

Re: Spyro to go back to the old loved dragon?

I don't want Spyro to be merged with other games. That would ruin the
whole dragon universe. But if one of the new games had a flashback to
old-school levels from the previous Spyro games, that would be very cool
[in my perspective] if they did it correctly.

Re: Spyro to go back to the old loved dragon?

Not merging, just including indirect references, like purple-shelled turtles, spiky-haired rodents, extremely poorly-made polygonal landscapes without texture (guess what game that is), etc.  Not to mention references to glitches and limitations of the 90s.

I wouldn't want Spyro in an actual crossover unless it is Super Smash Bros.

That would be ... wonderful. Kind of like that Tiki guy from Year of the
Dragon. Or maybe a skateboard level.
