Email Response From Insomniac

Hey all,
So this past week I sent Insomniac an email regarding spyro. They responded, and here's what I got:

Hi Roxy,

As far as Spyro goes, we didn't own the Spyro license, Universal did. Therefore, we had no say on which studios made games for the series. When we decided to do Ratchet, they took the series to another developer - it just makes sense business-wise. Just as we don't own Ratchet or Resistance. The PSP Ratchet and Resistance games were completely made by other studios with minimal input from Insomniac. We knew the basics of the storylines, but the rest was totally left to the other developers. I hope that makes sense. Video games after all are a business first and foremost, and sometimes that means different people work on different games.

We are a small studio and don't have the funding to buy the Spyro license back. And at this point there is roughly 10 people out of our staff of 170 that ever worked on the Spyro series. Sorry to say, there is no chance of us going back to Spyro at this point. We have our course set for the next 3 or so years - and unfortunately, Spyro isn't one of the games we will be working on.

Thanks for being so supportive of Insomniac Games. We all wish you the best.

-IG

This pretty much confirms that Insomiac is OUT on the Spyro business. It's sad, really, they seem much more keen on Spyro then Activision ever was (The people at Activision don't seem to care, from what I've heard). Hopefully this clears up some confusion about the rights n stuff, though it's anything but good news tongue

Re: Email Response From Insomniac

I am also saddened by this, but some of us have known this for quite a
while, as other companies made the "The Legend of Spyro" series.

It was really nice of them to get back to you. And for being so honest, rather than keep us hanging like another company...... *coughActivisioncough*

It's a shame, but truly, the Insomniac games will always be regarded as the best performing Spyro games of all time.

Re: Email Response From Insomniac

If you knew how Universal worked, you'd know this was old, old, old. Crash was Universal-owned thus ND never had the rights, and that info's been out for years now.

Re: Email Response From Insomniac

If you check out my other thread you'll see why it was causing speculation whether or not Insomniac still had rights.

Re: Email Response From Insomniac

I've known for a while that Insomniac never owned Spyro and Naughty Dog never owned Crash, but I thought they went independent and made their later games on their own.

Yo, Spyro
I'm really happy for you, but Jazz Jackrabbit is one of the best platformers of all time.

Re: Email Response From Insomniac

After reading it a few times over, I fugured out what you meant by that. In
the beginning of the movies, the earth turns as the "UNIVERSAL" logo
wraps around it. Instead of the logo, it would be Spyro.
