What the critics say about Spyro games
I did some research on review scores for all of the Spyro games.
Here's my method:
I wanted to isolate each version of each game to give credit to where credit is due. Strangely, Enter the Dragonfly got better scores on it Gamecube version and the DS versions of all of the Legend of Spyro games were superior over their console versions.
I couldn't find too many reviewers that review every single version of every single game. The ones I chose to draw from were Gamespot and IGN.
Gamespot's top 10 Spyro games:
IGN's top 10 Spyro games:
And the two scores combined top 10:
The scored are what you'd expect. Although it was interesting to see Gameboy Advanced higher on the charts.

Re: What the critics say about Spyro games
Gamerankings search for Spyro.
There's all the games with links to most of the reviews for them. It pretty much proves what we all knew anyway: Spyro hasn't been nearly as awesome since he was on the PS1.

Re: What the critics say about Spyro games
I have seen that high approval rating for the GBA version of Eternal Night, but only a few review groups support it. Most of what I've seen say that Eternal night in general is the worst game of the three LoS and they don't give the old GBA format any slack.
And Why is Ripto Quest that high on the list, let alone on the list at all.
Gamerankings.com is a good site for overall reviews. But some of the things I've seen from them are contaminated with bad user feedback and game reviewers that wouldn't know a good game if it slapped them on the back of the head.

Riptoquest is a good stupidphone game, but that's not saying much.

Re: What the critics say about Spyro games
Can't trust critics. You have to see and make your own judgment.
besides critics usually don't take in the positive aspects of things and only look for the bad in everything.

It was WAY more liner, there are little to no NPCs,so yeah it is worse.
I guess I just ignore those things about LoS while I play them.

Nope. I thought it was pretty hilarious, too, and nicely vindicating.

For a kids' game, A Hero's Tail is pretty nice. Heheh ... I like it.

Re: What the critics say about Spyro games
I never said these ratings were a good representation. I wanted to make the contrast between the players' reviews vs. gamer mags' reviews. Kind of a "part 2" from the best spyro games poll topic.

Re: What the critics say about Spyro games
How comes A Hero's Tail scored so low?
It was obvious they put a lot of effort into it. Considerably long, lots of collectables, playable characters other than Spyro, minigames, extras, great graphics, puzzles...
Music wasn't all that great though.

LoS wasn't the best, certainly. And the voice acting wasn't stellar, but it wasn't as bad as the voice acting in A Hero's Tail. I don't have any complaints about Gary Oldman. Kevin Michael Richardson is an experienced voice actor, so he was decent. Corey Burton and Jeff Bennett are also seasoned voice actors so, again, no complaints. David Spade was alright.
Elijah Wood definitely could've been better. Wayne Brady... no. Blair Underwood was alright. Christina Ricci was horrid.
Cree Summer was probably the best VA for Cynder, all said and done. Mae Whitman was alright.

The Elders were great, I thought. So was Cree Summer. The rest of them...eh. But Christina Ricci was the worst.

Re: What the critics say about Spyro games
Glad I'm not the only one who thinks that. Cree Summer's voice was the only thing I liked about Cynder. Christina Ricci just...no. I'm sure she's a fine actor, but I wanted to jam a pen in my ears every time Cynder talked in DotD. I feel bad that they wasted so much money paying just for her name in the credits.
