We Can Do Better
Honestly, the plot of recent Spyro games isn't what it used to be. The old games had charm, and they were very innovative for their time. The plot of the Legend series? Eh... the plots were tired and used all the time.
As for the title, I really mean it. I've seen fanfiction writers who come up with better plots than these "professionals." Here are a couple off the top of my head:
Rurikredwolf
RedDragonX
Aduro
Shade105
Given-Inside
The fans know what we like in a plot, but the companies don't take our input into consideration.

Re: We Can Do Better
I disagree that fanfic writers are better (sure the games' stories could be better, but they are 100% canon and still better than fanfic). Most fanfics need to die. So should most, BUT NOT ALL, fan characters.

Oh I am flattered I am on here.
I do agree with the post above me. I despise fanfiction and will never read random people's. Only people I know. 90% o the fan characters suck and are unimaginitive and pointless. If I have fancharacter, I have a use for them or have them on the supporting role, focusing on a canon character (Malefor for me)
BUT HEY, AT LEAST FANFICTION PEOPLE NEVER RIP OFF LOTR, AMIRITE?

Just because it's canon doesn't mean it's good. Second, I never said that all fanfic writers are better, I only said that I've seen fanfic writers who are better than the professionals and gave specific examples.

Re: We Can Do Better
I haven't read too much fan fiction. But I don't think it's fair to bash all fan fiction. Most of it sucks because they are bored or suffering from nostalgia in Spyro.

Re: We Can Do Better
Fun fact: LoS wasn't written by professional writers. The producers (aka, the guys whose job it is to raise money for the games and get them made) did the writing. It shows, too.

Oh, so they spend most of their budget on actors, and had nothing left for a writer. Maybe the rare one-in-a-million good fanwriter could have done better. Maybe if it was more accurate to the books and movies (Harry Potter, Star Wars, and Lord of the Rings) it would have been more original.

Re: We Can Do Better
...Star Wars wasn't based on a book. (Before you say anything, I've read Joseph Campbell's book and it has nothing to do with Star Wars.) I'm thoroughly confused now.
I've always been of the opinion that they wasted their money paying celebrity actors for those games. They should've paid for pro voice actors (who cost a lot less and do a much better job) and paid for some real writers (who, y'know, know how to write things).

yeah...
And how much of that 1% is actually taken from TLoS that already sucks as a storyline. The best fan fiction isn't just good, it would require it to introduce completely different characters, instead of the ones that are in the story we think is crap. Show me a good fan fiction that has 100% original characters and themes. It may not exist...

Re: We Can Do Better
Sure thing. It's called a book. If you don't have any of the original source material in your fanfic, it ceases being fanfic.
What you might be looking for in this case is something that takes the tired cliches of LoS and gives them actual life. The only writer I can think of who actually did that with LoS material was ScarabDynasty, and she didn't need any tacked-on OCs to do it.

Re: We Can Do Better
Actually Norman, so long as a story contains material, be they characters or locations, from the source, it's considered fanfic. So technically it would be considered fan fiction to have only locations from the source material and not the canonical characters, though very loosely.

Re: We Can Do Better
I can concede to that. But who would want to read a story that just took place in the setting (at least in the Spyro fandom)? I've seen it happen in fandoms where the source material is more about outright wish fulfillment (i.e. Dragonriders of Pern, Dungeons & Dragons, etc.), but Spyro is generally more about the characters than the settings (which are usually just generic fantasy sans the Insomniac games, which suggest unusual concepts like multiple universes).

Re: We Can Do Better
Very true. Spyro universe is mostly centered on the characters. I myself am a writer for TLoS continuity, although I generally try to avoid clichés and throw in twists. For example, in my fic that is 5 years after DotD, I chose someone... unexpected as Cynder's biological father. Many say Malefor, though that's improbable considering Malefor is centuries old, and others say Terrador.
But I digress. I'm a fanfiction writer myself. And I know I'm not a master, but then, writing is almost impossible to master as there is always something to learn, and different writing styles. So long as I like my work, I'm content. I've gotten positive feedback on it, but I don't let it go to my head. I just write because I love to write.
It also helps that I'm an English major, I suppose.

I see you writing amazing dragon-related books in your future, then the
books later becoming some wonderful and outstanding movie.
Well, that's me being my not-so-usual optimistic self.

Re: We Can Do Better
Character's are the only thing that get all interested in stories, having the setting being a volcano and it going off is only a obstacle, everyone could survive if they could but it might seem out of character, the starsrceam type would only save himself and once out of the woods would not help the others and run off for himself.
Take dead rising, if everyone had stayed sane and worked togeather the zombies would never of entered the West side of the mall..But no we had to have people go insane, cry or run away from the terror of events..the crazed people were a majority of the game's bosses.
Malefor is pretty much the most bendable character for a fan-fiction, He pretty much has no reason for wanting to kill the world or destroy it, anyone could mend it in the story as he got corrupted and thought everyone was evil but himself.
The story i am working on is basically taking the emotional side of someone and snapping it, you then got a psycho infested creature on the loose going on a happy go Slashing vigilante spree..and for people who he thinks are pure of heart..it's doesn't get any better but getting lock in cages like animals

Re: We Can Do Better
I think Malefor simply got power-hungry. He was the rare purple dragon.
And when he knew that Spyro came as the new Purple Dragon, Malefor
got in some sort of "there's not room in this world for the both of us" kind
of mood. So Malefor pretty much has anger management issues.
