Skylanders was originally going to be a darker Spyro Game
From Joystiq's preview of Skylanders at E3:
http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/07/skyla … n-toyland/
"Despite its name, Toys for Bob didn't come at this as a toy company. Reiche is an old-school gamer, and his company has a solid history of development, including the legendary Star Control titles and 1996's Pandemonium. In fact, when Activision first approached Toys for Bob about doing a Spyro title, Reiche and his company originally aimed for something much darker than Spyro has ever been before.
"Let's blow Spyro out," Reiche said at the time. "Let's raise up the age range for him, let's appeal to the kids over 16 up into young adults, let's make it tough and bloody. And we did all of this concept work and just lost our enthusiasm. That wasn't Spyro. That isn't what our passion was about. It was much more joyous and active, and so we sort of stepped back from that.
Especially seeing the younger bent of Skylanders and Toys for Bob's recent games, it's hard to imagine the property with a tougher edge, but it was one of a few ideas they went through before (sky) landing on this one. "We spent about six months on a variety of different directions with Spyro," says Reiche, "and to Activision's credit, they just kept saying more innovative, do something new, more innovative, and they gave us the time and the budget to really seek out what was our dream."

Dang, now I'm interested. I would have liked to see a more serious Spyro platformer, (maybe a T rating).

Re: Skylanders was originally going to be a darker Spyro Game
That is very interesting; I would have never guessed they started in that direction based on what they have now.
But, "appeal to the kids over 16 up into young adults" and "tough and bloody" don't necessarily mean an M-rating. I think T would have been more likely what they meant. Just saying.
Edit: You didn't have to change the title.... Oh well.

It's like the opposite of what happened with Conker's Bad Fur Day. It was originally going to be another kid-friendly game, until they decided to go over the top with inappropriateness.

Re: Skylanders was originally going to be a darker Spyro Game
It sounds like they were planning another Legend of Spyro (it was the darker series after all) but then reconsidered. I doubt they got too far into developing it, though.
[https://www.fanfiction.net/u/5597209/spashthebandragon] I've got fanfics for Spyro, Crash Bandicoot, Frozen, and Spectacular Spider-Man. Err, separately, I mean. Not some weird crossover thing. Those are all separate fanfics.

Re: Skylanders was originally going to be a darker Spyro Game
Well, there you have it. It's nice to think that the developers were having some of the same thought processes we were about what would be interesting for future Spyro projects.
And who knows, maybe much further down the road (if Skylanders doesnt catch on), Spyro will be reintroduced in a more mature way because another developer was intent on trying what Rieche was thinking but never did.
This thought allows me to put the LoS series 'end' on the backburner.

I personally wouldn’t want a mature Spyro game, I'll go to other series if I want mature.

Re: Skylanders was originally going to be a darker Spyro Game
If it's rated T for language and violence, fine, I'd get it. If it was M for sexual themes and excessive language and gore, then I'd consider Spyro to be dead.

With these mature games, they would be aiming for an older audience. In reality they're aiming for a younger audience. Why not aim for it to be fun for anyone? Like the original Insomniac games did. Almost all the so-called "kiddish" things I like (MLP: FiM included, before anyone brings that up) are fun to me because they're made in a way that appeals to all audiences, and it works.

including the legendary Star Control titles and 1996's Pandemonium
I swear I saw some aspects of Pandemonium in the screenshots. Ah, good game - too bad I wasn't able to finish it.
I wouldn't want to see Spyro being in a mature title. I have plenty of games with blood and gore if I'm in the mood for it. Now, if I can get Half-Life to work again...

A T / 16+ rated Spyro game?
That sounds so freaking aweesome.
But now we have a game with Demented Chameleon Spyro and his Happy Happy friends in Super Kawaii Desu Happy Land or something.

Spyro is supposed to be a kids' game in the first place, like Mario. I don't see why it needs a higher rating...

Re: Skylanders was originally going to be a darker Spyro Game
Spyro has always been a kids game, Hyper. Making him a T-rated or M-rated game would really have the majority of the fanbase complaining and would spell the end of the franchise.
It may sound awesome to some teenage Spyro fans, but the rest of the fanbase may not like the idea since Spyro has always been a kids game from the very beginning.

Re: Skylanders was originally going to be a darker Spyro Game
I think Spyro can easilly be fun and have a great story that isn't too cheesy like the LoS trilogy.I understand others enjoy the storyline but I was a bit disappointed with it. Spyro has ton of potential. Just being a dragon appeals to a lot of people.

Which is another example of Spyro fans "Not knowing what the hell they want."
Too many observations from previous games contaminate the expectations of future game developments.

Re: Skylanders was originally going to be a darker Spyro Game
uh... no, it's an example of people having individual opinions.
you can only call it confusion when taking the fanbase as a collective trying to achieve some kind of goal, which it could be interpreted as, but it's really just people wanting different things.
some want Skylanders, and others want The Eternal Night 2.0

Re: Skylanders was originally going to be a darker Spyro Game
I wouldn't mind a reboot to TLOS. Maybe it could eventually be redone with a better story, longer story, more personality, and more responsibility on Ignitus' part. He probably could have saved more than just Spyro's egg.

Re: Skylanders was originally going to be a darker Spyro Game
PFFFFT...
They should've done a more 'mature' Spyro game a long time ago. But nothing senseless like Grand Theft Auto or a rehash like almost every other violent game on the market. But rather try to create something that would be violent (and bloody) enough to attract the teenage and adult fans among the Spyro ranks, but go for something more along the line of a really good Survival/Horror kinda game. Maybe even sneak in a few Sigil Of Baphomet's (the Satanic pentagram) OR maybe not! :-P
Just a wild idea of mine. :-P

Malefor should of had a better reason, heck i would of even liked the what if part that he thought everyone but himself was evil

Re: Skylanders was originally going to be a darker Spyro Game
Ok..Spyro with blood and stuff..I wouldn't be too crazy about that..I mean,it's just not Spyro that way..
Bascially,as long as the game lasts long rather than just some hours like the TLoS, and has a good story and everything, that should be enough to appeal to all ages..

But Spyro the Dragon had a crap story and I think we can all agree that we all love that game.

I would have LOVED a more mature spyro game, especially is they kept the TLoS line (Sadly I'm probably about the last TLoS fan here).

Re: Skylanders was originally going to be a darker Spyro Game
You're not; just look at this thread and around the forum in general: lots of people here still like LoS. LoS-only fans just aren't the majority anymore.
I agree with the Skylanders team and don't think Spyro would work as "mature," but I could see it going the way Ratchet and Clank did, with a slightly darker and more involved story and a T rating for some language while still maintaining the platforming and not taking itself too seriously.

Maybe Stormy’s suggestion wouldn’t be to bad, but it should still be just a funny as it is serious.
