Merchandising

I haven't seen many Spyro products other than games.  I want to see Spyro t-shirts, hats, maybe even Lego sets.  It seems every other game out there has a line of t-shirts.

Re: Merchandising

I always used to wish for official Spyro merchandise.

T-shirts are easy, though. There are tons of websites that print T-shirts with anything you want on them. We could even make Spyroforum T-shirts if enough people wanted them.

Re: Merchandising

I mean officially licensed.  Maybe if we send designs to Activision, they'd be willing to go through.

Re: Merchandising

Activision's a pretty big company; it would probably take a lot of emails to convince them they'd make enough profit off of them to make them worth producing.

Re: Merchandising

Not only that, but getting them to accept your designs would be even harder. If they did want merchandise, they'd want it designed and made by whatever firm they hire.

Re: Merchandising

Yeeeey, we should have SpyroForum shirts. I'd wear it too often, then have
to buy new ones because the first one would be worn out so much.

That reminds me, I think SR should fix that picture at the top left, since the
boxes refer to Boxing Day.

Re: Merchandising

Two things that remain constant, the empty boxes on the spyro forum picture and day turning into night tongue. But technically for skylanders the toys for the games are the merchandise. Then with TLOS off the top of my head there were plastic spyro toys released with Wendys i think it was? I can't remember the fast food shops name. Then of course theres all the plushes of classic spyro, the plastic toys from nestle cereals, pinball machine, t-shirts as Stormy mentioned and i've seen an inflatable dragon which looks like spyro. I'm not sure whether or not this is official mechandies. Though thinking in the wider scheme of things in terms of merchandise all of that is very very small compared to other game merchandise.

Re: Merchandising

Considering the fact that I am a major Spyro merchandise collector, one of my biggest wishes is to see more Spyro merchandise.

I'm trying to start some Spyro Projects, check my guestbook for details, please throw some ideas to me so I can do as best as I can for the fandom. ^^

Re: Merchandising

with how money hungry activison is you would think that they would make more merchandise, right?

i mean its not like there isn't a large enough community that would buy this stuff. especially since their main target would be the younger audience, but they could make stuff for the older fans as well.

Re: Merchandising

If they're not doing it, that tells me they really don't think there's enough of a fanbase for them to bother with it.

I'd be interested to see some statistics about Spyro fans to find out how popular it is and with what age group. I mean, no one I know IRL is interested in the games coming out nowadays, but I'm not exactly their target audience. I get the impression that pre-Skylanders Spyro was not hugely popular enough for them to bother with merchandise, but that might just be because I'm not as in touch with what younger audiences care about.

Re: Merchandising

It's a sad day when Mega Bloks gets their filthy tentacles on the Spyro franchise.
tumblr_m91b2tPZ6A1rca388o1_400.jpg
They had Pirates of the Caribbean (and I think Lord of the Rings), and now Lego has those, so Spyro has a chance at building brick redemption.

Re: Merchandising

i can't help but feel extremely betrayed by this.

i feel no ounce of magic in any of these past corporate decisions regarding him, only mechanical insincerity. as if the however-many hundred Skylanders toys weren't enough, now we need more things from The Legos That Aren't Legos. Spyro indeed, if that figure doesn't depict Spyro, i just don't know what does. we didn't have this problem when Insomniac had the rights to this franchise.

marketing is *bleep*ing disgusting.

Re: Merchandising

mechanical insincerity. Spyro, in terms of business practices, has just become another way to milk something for every dime it's worth. what i meant was with Insomniac, they didn't do that. they released the games, some merchandise, and let consumers have some money left over. Activision have no mercy, having all these things kids will absolutely need because they feature a purple dragon, and for some odd reason that's probably ridiculous but still valid enough for me, i take this extremely personally.

Re: Merchandising

It's not exactly fair to compare a developer (Insomniac) to a publisher (Activision). The developers of a video game probably have little to no say in what merchandise gets released; they just make the game, and yeah, they probably come off as a bit more sincere and stuff because it's a smaller company with fewer people making decisions. If you want a more fair comparison, try Universal vs. Activision. It's the same thing: big companies making profit off a franchise they own  by selling merchandise.

So what, exactly, makes the Insomniac-era merchandise more "sincere" than these Mega Blocks? Is it the fact that it pairs Spyro with another brand?

Re: Merchandising

I'd say it's more Insomniac had pride in their work (Spyro) than the "hey, let's see how much money we can squeeze outta this thing before it dies" thing that whoever it is seems to be doing with Skylanders.

Re: Merchandising

Yeah, I keep hearing people say that, but I can't figure out what's giving everyone that impression that the Skylanders developers have less pride in their work than Insomniac did when I'm not sure that's really the case. Is it the toy thing? Is it that the games don't appeal to us anymore as a fanbase? Is it that everyone already hates Activision?

Re: Merchandising

probably because of the shameless marketing tactics. we didn't need Spyro "Legos That Aren't Legos" back in 2000, or 2005, or 2010... or all these action figures. the thinking is probably that if they had pride in their work alone, they wouldn't have felt the need to spread these extras so much.
