Black dragons
I think I realized that there are no Black dragons in Spyro games, until The Legend of Spyro games came out. Did anybody else realize this at all?
Spyro is the greatest!

Re: Black dragons
*Thinks for a moment* It's odd indeed. I guess it's too plain dark or something. Not that I think that why but I guess they choose not to do it. Until now...
I don't care how it looks but how it functions

Re: Black dragons
Well, black is a symbol of danger and fear, and plain evil in all human history, but so is the left side, (i think Sinister means left in latin)

Re: Black dragons
NAh... black is just for the contrast. The original three spyro games had a very high lighting which made it possible to make some of the places very adventourus like. In the LOS series, the whole plot is way darker, so adding black enemies, NPCs and dragons is no issue.
As an artist you should know that:
White: White is a very balancing contrast (NOT A COLOR). Anytime white is set among colors, the colors are seen much easier. White things like snow, dragons, eggs and so on in the first Spyro games lighted up the area. White sharpens dark colours, and soften/blend the light. This makes light scenaries very balanced.
Black: Black kills the colours around it, and is therefor almost never used. In the LOS series, black isn't really used if you look close enough. The colors are very dark blue, green, purple or greyish.
Dark steals the view and mists the light colours. Darker coulours blend into the black so that they look more blackish. But they relly isn't.
In the LOS series the worlds and places are much darker, misties and more livly. Therefor shading could be frequently used. But if the Original spyro games where shaded much of the bright colors would dissapear. This is one of the reasons why there aren't any black dragons. There is a dragon which is black in spyro 1 though. I do believe you find him in the swamp world. But if you look close enough, he's really just very dark green. If black is going to be used, the colours around CAN NOT be bright. If so, the bright colors will die (not be seen as good, the black steals the eye). If the colours around is dark or shady, Black can be used, if white is used here the dark colours will get sharper around.
Insomniacs plan for Spyro the dragon was that it had to be a bright fantasy game, with magic and wonders. The LOS series plays more on mysteries, which fits perfectly for a darker set.
____________
Look at my banner for example.
My banner containst the three prime colors.. Red, Blue and Yellow.
The green is the opposite of red, and thus the face of the character shown and the clothing strengths eachother. The clother aren't really white, but they are bright. The hair is actually green. If you want a color to look black without using it, have a very dark color of the opposite version of the colour it surrounds or is surrounded by. In this case red/yellow/orange.
The background: Now for the black/white fields. The character is placed on the brightest place in the banner. Why and how?
The opposite of blue is orange, his face is Orange, and the face is in the center. There for blue is used to keep the white and black seperated. why? if the black and white crashes in tyhe background it will desroy the main picture. Some places'll get darker than others.
The white strengthens the bright colours in the middle, while the outer black balances the light as it fades.
If the backforund had been all black, things like his hair and describing lines wouldn't have been seen. If it was all white the major lines wouldn't been seen, and many places would look very very bright.
---
The LOS series balances this out with Spyro, who is darker purple. Purple is a mixture between the cold color blue and the warm color red. This will make a neutral color, and even though you can say it's dark purple in the LOS series, it's light purple in the original series. But infact, the same colour is used. The LOS series is made darker, so everything in the game will look very dark. Things like flames and special lights in the LOS series will "glow". In the original spyro series such lights wouldn't have been seen.
_____
I hope this cleared up abit...
Yes, all of this is the reason to why there aren't any "DARK" dragons in the original trilogy games

Re: Black dragons
Sleva is very correct in that manner, as it is true black kills the colors around it. It is very true about how that is. It's also probably the reason IN MOST CASES Cynder is drawn is a dark purpleish color. She is a black dragon, but in most cases when you try lightening black you get gray, which as you can guess it wouldn't look very good, so that is likely why she often looks a bit purple dontcha think.
Also take into the fact that Black Dragons don't necessarily use darkness as a form of fighting, nor are they specifically evil. Look at Red for example. He's red, which is a very bright color, yet he is evil. Ripto is red/orange too. I'm pretty sure the Sorceress is yellow, which is practically the brightest color out there, besides white; which isn't a color. It is also a likely theory that Ripto, the Sorcerer (He is red right, I don't really know), The Sorceress and Red are such bright colors since, well it goes with the light and happy theme of the old games. Then we look at Gaul and Dark Cynder who, are well dark colors, which goes with the Dark theme of TLoS, although Gaul those have a glowing green eye, but that's beyond the point.
And white dragons are usually Wind (Yeah I know...) or Light forms of attacks. Remember though, Even a user of light energy, which is normally a form of good, can be evil. Also take into effect that, Gaul would likely think Spyro is the evil one, since Spyro seems to endlessly kill all his solders. Nevertheless, that's my 2¢.

Re: Black dragons
yay! you said it.
In 3D games like Spyro, using black can be a HUGE mistake. Together with forexample a dark purple there will be no flooding, and you can see the line between the colours.
And as you said Carrottime, CYNDER IS NOT A BLACK COLORED DRAGON!!!

Re: Black dragons
If you want to state that she's an evil dragon, you could use DARK. Because Black ain't really a color, and they would never use it in this game.

Black was used in both ANB and TEN, at some point, but it was such a small amount we wouldn't notice unless we looked ofr it.
Black is in everything.
IMPO, I'd say it was pretty much for eyes.

Re: Black dragons
Black is a contrast, lighting so practically it is in everything yes. But never pure black in artworks/games. The pupils cannot be totally dark, it would kill the perspective. Therefor they would need to settle it with white contrast or shade it. So the pupils are never pure black.
Just darker then the darkest colours.

It's not a contrast either, and neither is white.
Black and white have their own category. The correct names for Black and White is "Acromatic Colors".
However Grey is called a contrast.
