A Hero's Tail... Is it worth it?
Well I've been a Spyro fan since I was a 6 year old girl. Starting off with Enter the Dragonfly (which I know was heavily panned but I still love it) and I recently started playing the 3 originals. But one game that always has never seemed appealing to me, was A Hero's Tail.
When I saw it at age 8 I said to my dad "what... That's not Spyro..."
I'm a fan. I'll play almost anything except that Skylanders rubbish. But I just really think that A Hero's Tail looks horribly childish.
So what would you say about it? Do you think it's worth playing? Should I look past the childish exterior?

Re: A Hero's Tail... Is it worth it?
I'm a fan of the original 3 games, and I loved AHT. Yes, the humor and characters are pretty childish at times, but that's not the point of the game. The point is that gameplay is fun, and there are plenty of collectables to keep you busy as well. Light Gems, Dragon Eggs, (and gems, but they aren't required to reach 100%, just to buy things from Moneybags). The game is also fairly long, so you definitely get your money's worth.
It's not the Spyro you know and love, but the game is still good in my opinion.
I agree with you about Skylanders. I'm not going to pay for a kid's game that doesn't look appealing to me just because it has the name Spyro in the title.

Re: A Hero's Tail... Is it worth it?
It's better than Enter the Dragonfly. But that's not really saying much. The game is pretty short and there is almost no difficulty or originality to the game. It's not worth it IMO.
EDIT:
The game is also fairly long, so you definitely get your money's worth.
Maybe if you try to get 100% but even then you get nothing out of it other than some massive fourth wall breaking in the ending.(Think of it as beating the 3rd Birthday 50 times to see Aya in the shower. Unless you're an extreme pervert there's no point to it.)

Re: A Hero's Tail... Is it worth it?
I pretty much always go for 100% on games. I've learned to deal with the lack of special endings after getting all 120 Shines in Super Mario Sunshine and having the Toads say the princess is still missing...
No difficulty? That underground, skull-themed Hunter level was pretty tough. And the Blink ones weren't exactly a walk in the park either. A lot of the collectables made you think or perform some pretty difficult glides too. But if you didn't go for 100%, I guess you'd miss out on those.
missbarghest: I suppose it's up to you and what kind of games you like. To be fair, I did play it a few years back, so I suppose my review might not be as accurate since I've played a lot more games since then.

I only 100% a game if i like it. But if it's for some thing really obscene(Beat The 3rd Birthday 50 times to see a scene where Aya is in the shower for example. Then again 3rd Birthday sucked hard so...) Then i won't do it.

I really liked it. It's not as good as the originals and the humor is a little off, but they had the right idea of what Spyro should be when making this game. Good gameplay, challenging puzzles and minigames that aren't too frustrating, and really pretty worlds.

AHT is fairly good despite panning critic reviews, If you're gonna try to find it on PS2, I can only wish you luck. You'll probably find it on eBay, but to find AHT on PS2 in good condition is EXPENSIVE!

Re: A Hero's Tail... Is it worth it?
I actually favored ETD over AHT, but that's just my opinion. Hero's Tail wasn't horrible, but like missbarghest said about it looking childish, I agree. When I first played it I didn't like the animation, it looked like Spongebob in a bad way. Regardless to each his own, so I do recommend it on the sense that it's not a horrible game, but it's not my favorite Spyro game if that makes sense. I also didn't really like having all those things to find because it takes me awhile and I still haven't 100% gotten everything, that and I'm just lazy...lol.
I have changed my username from Justin Long Fanatic to EricChristianOlsenFanatic, so Justin Long Fanatic is my old name on this site, and EricChristianOlsenFanatic is my new one.

Re: A Hero's Tail... Is it worth it?
I'd say it's the highest-quality Spyro game. It doesn't have the nostalgia of the first three, but totally a worthwhile game. My biggest beef against it is that you can't re-battle bosses. The worlds are HUGE and there is a lot more exploration.
I got mine new for $10. It was a steal.

Re: A Hero's Tail... Is it worth it?
... the nostalgia of the ...
New word for you, eh? I've been seeing that world a lot within the past two
weeks on this website. Every time I read or hear that word, I think of one of
my favorite bands, Nyctalgia.
Anyway, I think the game is very fun, regardless of its "desired age group."
Unfortunately, I'm caught up in playing Homefront at the moment. I needed
a gun game to play other than Battlefield [since I have over 710 hours on it].
A Hero's Tail ... I could never get over the fact that Spyro's butt bops up and
down as he "trots" along the ground. It looks pretty funny.

this basically.
the graphics were actually kind of like Skylanders in that they were good, colorful, just not really overly "realistic-looking", and yeah, like you (the OP ) said, childish. (i stand by my shameless fanboy status for LOS's graphics.) but yes you should look past that and get this, it's good.

I'd rather have a kid's game than an adult's game with bad content in it.

Absolutely, its worth it. I had this same thought process. AHT was the first game I decided not to buy right off the shelf because ETD was so poorly made. But after, my Spyro fandom hiatus, I revisited during the LOS 'scandal' and put it upon myself to play through the 13 games again (some for the first time) to give my honest personal opinion about all of them.
AHT is actually one of the best games IMO, especially for those who strongly disliked the LoS movement. It is childish at times like people say, but I'm not so sure what's wrong with that. AHT could be considered childish, but it's not a preschool head start program. Its a full adventure with colorful characters and fantastically drawn worlds. It also has a good soundtracl, despite the contrast with Stewart Copeland's definition of Spyro music.
You just have to play it with an open mind, and enjoy it that way. It's definately worth a play.

Not true. Amazon has all versions of it used for under $6. And it's only a little more if you want to buy it new. I bought mine used for ps2 and never had a problem with it.

Re: A Hero's Tail... Is it worth it?
Yeah, true ...
I still haven't finished AHT. I don't get why. I am sure I'd be playing it if I was
able to stay connected to Xbox LIVE to talk to my friends. I guess I don't play
it as much because it is an Xbox Original game and not a 360 game.
But now that you guys reminded me of AHT and are talking about it, I have an
urge to go play it ... which is not a bad thing at all.

Metal Gear Red is perhaps easier to beat than regular Red.

I'd recommend it. It's very underrated.
Sure it can be slightly childish at times but the gameplay it the important thing.
