Does it get worse?
Hello everyone, this is my first time visiting these forums!
I have just a year ago bought a Playstation 1 and all of the three Spyro games for it, and enjoyed the games very much, as i did as a child.
So now i have a Playstation 2 and all of the Spyro games for it(5 games) on its way to my home.
And while I'm waiting, i have been reading reviews about the game, but i felt like i needed some thoughts about the games from the community at large, you are the real fans, the critics are not!
So tell me, does it really only go "downhill" from Spyro Year of the Dragon, does it only get worse?

Re: Does it get worse?
the first three are great. 4 has the feel of the classics, but fails because of the glitches and incompleteness. 5 is very different from the first 4, but is definitely worth playing. The TLOS series is a reboot, and if you like fantasy and upgrading elements, you might like it.
Yo, Spyro
I'm really happy for you, but Jazz Jackrabbit is one of the best platformers of all time.

Re: Does it get worse?
Thanks for your great replies!
36IStillLikeSpyro36:
It sounds really different, i must admit, i just love the old "Collect every single thing, glide to secret spots" etc, with the originals, it sounds as if they were scared people would hate them if they continued on that path, so they changed to much, to fast, eventually chosing to "restart" it with a whole other team.
From what ive seen on trailers and such, Hunter all of a sudden becomes this super serious ranger badass, from being a chilling skateboarding badass with that diggs chicks. I'm not sure if i can ever learn to love that =/
I guess what i was "hoping" for was the same deal as the first 3 games, a story line, a crapload of gems and treasures, and a balanced variety of mini-games, normal combat and hidden treasures!
Then again, maybe its because im a simple guy, and they say that men are often afraid of change? perhaps im overthinking it!
I apologize for bad grammar, i come from Sweden
Thanks so much for your kind responses, this seems like a great community forum!

Re: Does it get worse?
They certainly did change a lot, and while the first three are widely regarded as the best, I guess you could say your mileage may vary. The TLoS series generally got worse reviews than the original trilogy from almost every critic, but a lot of people do like it for being more story focused and having combat where it takes more than one hit to kill the enemies. Most of the games between the originals and TLoS tried to be like the originals and were pretty good, with the exception of Enter the Dragonfly, which is full of glitches and was clearly not very well planned out at all.
Here's my opinion on TLoS (up to the second game as I have yet to play the third one). As far as the story goes, a lot of people will say it's "dark," and while the game certainly is literally dark to the point of not even being able to tell where you're going sometimes, the subject matter isn't very heavy or thought-provoking or scary. We have Spyro, who was found as an egg by a family of dragonflies and grows up thinking he is a dragonfly and Sparx is his brother until one day some apes attack and he discovers he can breathe fire. He goes on to meet Ignitus, who tells him he is the last Special Purple Dragon and it is now up to him to save the world from the "Dark Master." We find out later that this Dark Master wants to destroy the world because it's predicted by a prophecy. The Dark Master's minions include Cynder, a female dragon who predictably turns good after being defeated and becomes Spyro's love interest for the remainder of the series; and Gaul, an ape who has entire armies of little apes to send after you. Besides Ignitus, there are three other "guardians" that help Spyro learn to use his elemental abilities.
Fighting the little apes makes up a majority of the gameplay of the first two games. How the gameplay works is basically this: You enter a level. There's a cutscene. Apes attack you. You keep walking for a while, maybe solving an obvious puzzle where you have to push statues around. There's a cutscene. More apes attack you. Repeat this until the end of the level where there will probably be a boss. The reason this is frustrating is not just because it gets old, but because they send so many apes at you at once. They swarm around you and some of them take forever to kill. Also, you can run out of breath (I would say fire, but there are four elements you will eventually be able to use) and have to replenish it by collecting a certain color of gems, so most of Spyro's fighting is done by hitting the enemies with his tail and horns. If you collect a certain number amount of purple gems, Spyro will fill his fury meter, and you can do a slow motion elemental fury attack that will significantly damage most of the enemies around you.
None of the characters has much particularly interesting about them. Spyro is just the hero whose only motivation is to save the world because a prophecy predicted it, and this wouldn't be bad if he had a personality outside of that (he doesn't). Sparx is supposed to be a sort of sarcastic comic relief, and while he does have the occasional funny line, sarcasm is all he does, and it gets pretty old. As for the villains, evil Cynder is probably the most interesting, but once she shrinks down back to Spyro's size, she has even less of a personality than he does.
Tl;dr I didn't like it, but you might enjoy it if combat and fantasy hero's journey stories are your thing.

Re: Does it get worse?
I wouldn't bother playing 4 unless if you just want to say you've played it. It's glitchy, ugly, and just poorly made in general.
5 is different in the way that there aren't many "collect all the gams" sort of deal, and the levels are pretty different. However, it still is just as good in the platforming aspect, and the story is pretty similar to the previous ones. However, I personally like the boss battles a lot more than in the previous games.
I really liked the story in ANB, despite it being drastically alien and a bit harder to grasp. However, unlike the previous ones it is heavily linear. It's very good as its own game, and it isn't as bad as most on here make it out to be (usually it's constantly compared to its predecessor).
TEN is nothing impressive. It's just an extension off of ANB using the same graphics, bosses, and enemies. Nothing big comes out of this. It does allow you more freedom in upgrading than ANB, but other than that I would say it is only truly an expansion, if even that. If you can get it for $20 or less, then I would say you should enjoy it in itself, but any higher than that and I would say it's just a waste of money.
DotD seems really underrated around here. Generally, you have the people who say "Meh, okay." and then most of the rest say "Wow, this game sucks." around here. But like ANB, it is best judged by itself. There are many plotholes, but unlike ETD or TEN, it feels like a complete game other than that. The feel of it is completely different than all other Spyro games before it, so it is usually judged harshly. However, the platforming aspect of it is pretty challenging. The fights are similar to ANB and TEN when it comes to just bluntly button mashing, but at certain points it does get pretty complicated. I would say it is even better if played with another person.

Yeah ... most of us here want a new Spyro game that is similar to the originals.
The originals simply had that special ... spark of creativity that a person of
every age can enjoy. Something that creates wonderful childhood memories...
Then again, maybe its because im a simple guy, and they say that men are often afraid of change? perhaps im overthinking it!

Sweden is a cool place. My favorite game developer is based there, along
with Notch. I'd love to go visit that place some time in my future. Also, I
think being a simple man is a positive thing.

I'm not sure where Spyro is going these days. It makes me sad, actually. I
feel like a part of me is breaking off and floating away. I guess this forum
is the only thing that keep my interest in Spyro. I rarely play the games,
even though I smile every time I look at the case of one. In a way, I feel
pain on the inside every time I think about the direction Spyro has gone.
Game developers can be ... well ... difficult sometimes.

I dunno, I remember dying a lot and getting mad and the getting headaches while fighting those monkeys. The really hard parts were the bosses, though, especially that *bleep* Arborick where it forces you to only strafe for some reason. T__T

Re: Does it get worse?
Wow thanks so much for great responses, you guys are awesome!!
I realize some games (Like Spyro 4) sounds as if they are incredibly rushed and glitchy, but i got the "Collectors syndrome", It just doesn't feel right to just buy all the "worthwhile" games, i need to have them all! Haha (Atleast for the Playstation consoles!)
But it is nice to get some fanbased thoughts about them, i believe you should not put too much trust into critics reviews about a game, since we all know there are games out there we love, that sometimes get 0 points in ALL reviews, so knowing what you guys think is really helping me out here!
Again, you guys(and gals) are great, thanks!!

Re: Does it get worse?
The first 3 were good, Enter The Dragonfly was pretty good, except for the loading screens, Hero's Tail was crap, I disliked it and the animation was too cartoony like a Spongebob episode. The Legend Series is really amazing and I enjoy all 3 Legend games especially the 3rd one. As for Skylanders, that doesn't interest me in any way shape or form.
I have changed my username from Justin Long Fanatic to EricChristianOlsenFanatic, so Justin Long Fanatic is my old name on this site, and EricChristianOlsenFanatic is my new one.
