A long time ago, the "items" feature was added, but it was never fully implemented. Users were supposed to be able to use the gems they earn from posting to purchase "items" like avatars, signatures, and stuff like that. I made some items once that the admin was supposed to add, but he never did (probably because they weren't very good).
