Spyro Debate #1
Yeah, I was going to get around to making this eventually. For now, there aren't really going to be many rules for this. This first one will be kind of an experiment to see what works.
Check the poll for the question, and make sure you vote in it if you're going to participate. The debate will be over when the poll expires. I set this one to two weeks, but adjustments can be made for future threads depending on how that goes.
Just pick a side and try to convince everyone that your side is correct. And yes, "neutral" can be a side if you want it to be. If everyone is picking the same side, it would be nice if someone could switch over for the sake of balance. If you do this, make sure you vote for your actual opinion in the poll.
And remember, purple dragons are not serious business, so let's not let it get too heated. No personal insults or anything like that.
I guess I'll start: Skylanders is good because it has gotten more people interested in the Spyro series. Even if you don't like the Skylanders games or even consider them real Spyro games, there have surely been people who have looked into playing the previous Spyro games after playing Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure.

Re: Spyro Debate #1
I think it's kind of a good thing but still I don't consider it as Spyro game and if new Spyro games won't be released because of Skylanders then it's a bad thing.
But it's true that Skylanders introduced Spyro to younger players who don't know the Original Spyro games or The Legend Of Spyro games. Because of that the potential buyers of a new Spyro games is increased so I think it's better chance to get a new Spyro game.

Re: Spyro Debate #1
franchise in an economic sense, wonderful. the people responsible for it are probably literally rolling in money with how much a dedicated fan would have to spend.
in general, bad. Skylanders by itself may be tolerable, but it's attached to an already-existing idea, Spyro, which is very different. changing that drastically is a bad idea. some people say that change is okay, but there's a point when something changes too much into something else.
plus i don't like the idea of younger players remembering Spyro looking like that.

Re: Spyro Debate #1
You have some good points there:
in general, bad. Skylanders by itself may be tolerable, but it's attached to an already-existing idea, Spyro, which is very different. changing that drastically is a bad idea. some people say that change is okay, but there's a point when something changes too much into something else.
Yes. It's true that big changes aren't good for any game franchise or in any franchise. The fans who has been fans since the beginning might not like the new things. But!!! In my opinion Spyro changed quite a lot in The Legend Of Spyro games (though I haven't played those but I know that the game play is very different than the originals). I don't like Skylanders as Spyro game. But I like it as Skylanders game. I think that Spyro was used in Skylanders just to increase the number of potential buyers. It is
Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure
not
Spyro: Skylanders Adventure
Spyro is just a visiting character in the game.
plus i don't like the idea of younger players remembering Spyro looking like that.
I agree with that. Spyro shouldn't look like that.

Re: Spyro Debate #1
Do you guys think the Spyro series is "dead" now because of Skylanders?
in general, bad. Skylanders by itself may be tolerable, but it's attached to an already-existing idea, Spyro, which is very different. changing that drastically is a bad idea. some people say that change is okay, but there's a point when something changes too much into something else.
I agree with this point; it is completely different. But where do you draw the line where a change is too much change? Lots of people drew that line at Legend of Spyro and said that it was too different to be considered Spyro anymore. Is the difference merely whether or not a given person likes the change?

Re: Spyro Debate #1
It's hard to decide. From what I've seen skylanders is a decent title (if somewhat conniving and cheap in some ways. Paying for all those statues to finish the game? Come on.) and at least it keeps Spyro in the public eye so he doesn't fall into obscurity.
However, the game does not focus on Spyro at all, and sort of downgrades him. Given that this took place only a little bit after the Legend trilogy I fear that Spyro might be getting overused and people might become sick of him. The game also takes away from the traditional essence of spyro and pretty much makes him into a figurehead with no real gaming identity.
Liked the original games, didn't like the newer ones. You go ahead an like whatever you want though.

usually harsh vocals is where i draw- oh. i don't know, when the game stops being about the original characters and collecting gems, i guess. also when "Spyro" isn't the main character.

nah. but i like TLOS, so i don't care. you could argue that's not Spyro either and probably be right, though.

Re: Spyro Debate #1
I still cannot BELIEVE they didn't add Sparx, they, in my opinion, should've tweaked Spyro and Cynder a bit more, and the idea was just plain terrible. The only Spyro game I think was worse than this was Enter The Dragonfly.

Re: Spyro Debate #1
To a question above, I think LoS was honestly too much change, because it took out the exploration factor to an absurd degree (LoS series was too linear. no branching paths, no ability to backtrack (if you wanted to), no gems to collect for a bit of extra challenge (because the LoS games needed it, personally), etc.) and kinda mindless (in the original, you at least needed to attack enemies a certain way for the best results (or any result at all). In LoS, the only enemies that can't die to a button masher are special enemies in harder-to-reach areas far removed from the actual plot).
To the debate, like someone said before, economically, it's a good thing. It gets money flowing back into Spyro again and keep people interested in the purple dragon.
In general, it is horrible. The appearance of it, its major reliance on a gimmick (swap-able characters via toys), and the fact that Spyro isn't the "main character" really limit the audience it's targetting. Some old Spyro fans are disgusted by what they've been doing to his character, some new(er) fans hate that he's not the same as LoS (or the original if they like him better than the LoS version), most or all of the pre-Skylander fans say his new appearance is god-aweful, and too many of the people who started out with Skylanders seem to think that this is just how he was supposed to be (not all, especially not here, but internet and other forums) which hurts his abillity to go back to his older game style (either LoS or original) because the "fans" want more Skylanders. <_<

But what about Activision continuing Skylanders and at the same time releasing Spyro's own game. Taking Spyro out from Skylanders won't hurt Skylanders series and Spyro would have more possible buyers because of Skylanders. Next year is Spyro's 15th anniversary so I don't think it's all impossible that Activision would do something with Spyro.
