New Name: Skylanders NOT Spyros Adventure

Im really upset. Ive been thinking alot about it lately and skylanders killed any chances of Spyro returning.

Its sad because the other day i was looking at Skylanders stuff, and remembered thats how i was when i was a kid, but then im thinking, its very sad because Skylanders is no longer about spyro.
Look at the game cases, only Skylanders Spyros Adventure shows him. The sequels dont. He is playable, but its not about him. Its sad really because little kids nowdays will never know what spyro was, and will likely never play the original trilogy.

I went to my mothers house a week ago and brought Spyro 3 Year of the dragon over with my PS1. My brother was playing Skylanders. I then showed him this and said its a new game. He started it up, HE LIKED IT BETTER.

Thats pretty sad that little kids will avoid the old games, but in the end, the old games are Superior. Graphics dont make a game. And neither does silly trading cards or overpriced figures.

Ccrogers, you should've heard abut the story Skylander novels that take place before SSA, that featured Spyro as the main character. They showed his personality just like the Classic Spyro you know and adore.

The only hope is that Activision makes a separate full Spyro game, though I don't see that happening anytime soon.

Yeah, there are story novels that take place before the first Skylanders game, the first being Skylanders: The Machine of Doom that features Spyro as one of the main characters of course.

The sequel, Skylanders: Spyro versus The Mega Monsters, has Spyro as the title character again, and this time, he's the main character of the book and actually has a role. There are more novels being made under Skylanders' mini series 'Mask of Power', but they feature different Skylanders.

I hope the Undead Mask of Power book has Cynder as the title character.

They made novels? Well i guess i would not be surprised. Activision is finding every way possible to milk this to its core. I would not be in the least big surprised if they find some way to get Skylanders a TV Show on NICK.

Actually, Activision did say that they are looking into the possibility of a Skylanders show.

In the novel, The Machine of Doom, it showed that Spyro still had to get used to working in a team and was convinced that he could do everything by himself.

It was to be expected, ccrogers, Skylanders is a popular kids franchise now. If it happens, well, it just happens. At least Spyro would finally have some tv show time, but not in the way most of us frantically want.

I would of loved that back when the series was really spyro, but im 100% sure the TV Series will have not one drop of storyline to do with spyro.

Its too bad that this happened. Spyros legacy that todays kids will remember is a jack o lantern purple dragon with a high pitched broken sounding voice.

Skylanders TV Show interesting. Also I know it sucks man but Skylanders is making Activision huge money they'll keep milking the franchise because they can get so much money out of it.

Nearly four years ago when that was posted, after the release of DotD.

Spyro was lucky to be picked, or he would've faded into obscurity, or picked up by a game company who had no experience with making Spyro games.

i'm going to be completely honest, i would have preferred that. that's a pretty selfish thing to think, but then again, so is leaving behind games that don't have the potential to be exploited for a hundred million dollars until they're run into the ground. at least there would have been some honor left to this series.

Assuming you're referring to the letting it fade into obscurity bit, I agree completely. It's better to leave something alone when it's over and done with than to keep rehashing and exploiting it.

The beating a dead horse analogy is pretty relevant here I think. The Spyro name is a dead horse that is being beaten. I think Skylanders could be fun, and would love to give it a shot (if it ever becomes cheap enough to be worth it...) but did it need Spyro's name? No. It would have sold just as well without it, if not better.

I agree and this is coming from a Skylanders fan. The only reason I first could interested in the series was because Soyro was in it. Now I love the entire cast of characters. I don't complain if a video game company beats a dead horse cause I love the series. The Mario and The Legend of Zelda series are good examples.

But there comes a time when a series needs to end not just for video games, shows and movies too.

But personally id prefer that. Spyro was not really anything to do with skylanders. Spyro dropping at Spyro Dawn Of The Dragon may of been best. It was the 10th aniversary game, and felt like the "Finale" anyways.

Agreed. I would say Mario and Zelda are not beating a dead horse though, because those games still feel fresh and there was no end to either series. The Spyro series has ended twice now.

Eventually im sure activision will end Skylanders as well for something more "Innovative".

Wait and see. They will end skylanders in favor of something else. Something similar, but less expensive and complicated for activision to create. Such as a Spyro game that requires you to scan trading cards IR codes.

But, they were already planning on making more games after DotD, even one that was going to include blood. But then they decided against that and worked with TFB and decided to do Skylanders, with Spyro being the reason for its creation.

Why does it matter that it exists? If you don't like it, you don't think it's Spyro, and you'd rather Spyro have just died, couldn't you just ignore the fact that this game exists and be happy with that?

KingLambda and Stormy are both right. As for the Skylanders series I say this as not a fan though I am one.

The series makes Activision money. If it keeps doing so which it does they will continue to make more toys and games based of the franchise. Best thing to do like Stormy said if you don't like the series ignore it.

That being said I am looking forward to Skylanders Swap Force and a potential Skylanders TV series off topic I know but to get back on topic if you don't like the series once again don't pay any mind to it.

I assume most fans find it hard to ignore it as long as Spyro is included in the game as a character. I think Skylanders served Spyro some justice, he's now in story novels, activity books, and may even be in the potential tv show. Children who play Skylanders and didn't know who Spyro was, will know who he is in the game, just not the Spyro most of us grew up with. The devs literally looked at the original Spyro games for references in Skylanders.

But some fans are still not satisfied, begging to a game developer like Insomniac to "bring Spyro back" when Insomniac never even owned the license, or wanting Spyro to be "dead".

One of the biggest things that really blew me off on Skylanders was the god ugly design for spyro.
Spyro does NOT look like he ever did. Its hard to recognize him. Its just a purple dragon thing with a fat jack o lantern head. hmm
Thats not how he should of been designed at all.

The other is the absence of Sparx. Sure, hes there, but you must PURCHASE the sparx figure to use him.

He looks just fine to me probably because I got so use to the design and love it now. Also I mean yeah Sprax is an item like character in the game but there still is plenty of other characters beside him that make up for it. It's it's own franchise now Skylanders is but Cynder is in it Spyro is in it. Sparx not being a main character dosen't change the fact there's still plenty of other characters in it. You've got your option so I respect it but just because Spyro is not a main focal point in Skylanders does not mean he is not one of the main characters in the series. Peace all that is all I can offer as an option.

Well you can't expect Spyro to look exactly the same in every reboot in the franchise. I've seen many dragons with different faces growing up, I wasn't fazed that much by Spyro's redesign.
