Re: General Discussion 5

I was really enjoying Luigi's Mansion, then I got stuck on one part. =/ I haven't played it in a while since then because usually if I put a game down for a while and come back to it later I can figure it out. I'm trying not to use any guides for this game.

Re: General Discussion 5

a rare thing happened, i went to see a movie today. my family was going to see "Now You See Me" (it's funny because now you're seeing the movie), so i decided to tag along.

for sitting in a darkened room with no outside distractions stuffing my face with unhealthy snacks and staring at a screen for two hours, it was entertaining. but entertaining doesn't mean good. somebody on IMDb said that there's never a dull moment in the movie. they're right, the problem is, they sacrifice character development and spirit and emotion and 99% of the world in the process. the entire movie is about magicians (called "The Four Horsemen", who knows why - maybe they're bringing the apocalypse?) that do tricks that take too long to perform stealing money, and the resulting chase. this would be interesting, if the whole thing weren't just continual *bleep*-ups by the FBI and plot twists for the sake of making the story seem deeper, like cutting a pizza into strange shapes to make eating it seem different than the other times you just cut it across the middle a bunch of times.

there are a fair number of things that don't seem to fit, like the occasional inappropriate joke or swear word, which i don't really mind, but they are so removed from the context of the movie, they stick out like the appearance of Morgan Freeman, whom i can't imagine as the character they gave him. only as Morgan Freeman, because that's who he looks like and sounds like. also lines like "i don't know why people have to believe in the unexplainable to feel better about things" and "faith is a luxury that i can't afford right now". lines like this seem to permeate the media today, and are not in context ever, and never fail to rub me the wrong way. "it's hard to see your idols fall" from Castle, anyone?

and what the *bleep* is with the cameras? maybe it's just the screen, but half of the movie (that's not clearly intended to be digitally edited like holographs and special effects) looked like CGI, even though it was clearly real. and i honestly couldn't follow half of the action scenes, because the cameras moved too much while too much stuff was happening to begin with anyway. and remember kids, moving the camera around in an exciting moment of a movie is not a good special effect. it only makes it look like you can't hold a camera.

did i mention that the characters didn't develop at all? sure, the chase scenes where the cameras are going well are cool, and the insanely detailed and hopefully unrealistic explanations of the massive lengths to which people go to pull off a magic trick are interesting, but when the characters are just there and make obscene jokes every now and then, i'm not inclined to care about any of them, much less remember their names or what they're doing. who are these people? what's the big deal? one guy apparently didn't feel like he was taken seriously enough (i guess?), and him opening a door for them was what made him a "big boy" to them. not just anyone can unlock doors, especially the FBI.

"will you just listen for a secon-"
"MAGIC ISN'T REAL!!! THE EYE!!!!!"

. . . i won't spoil the ending ("zomg magic isn't real, but i can still get to the other side of this wall without tricks!") (that is btw never explained), but it's very mind-*bleep*ing, if that helps anybody's case at all. it's a satisfactory ending, but depending how deeply you think about it, it's also a very dissatisfying ending. i don't know.

maybe i'm just cynical. maybe i'm just not a movie kind of guy. or maybe this movie's genuinely as two-dimensional as i think it is. i would feel more comfortable if somebody else watched this too, and had something (positive or negative) to say about it.

either way, it's amazing to me that so much money and effort could go into a production, of which i forgot about 50% by the time we left the theater.
