Really, though, I can see where you're coming from, but, you know, those Captcha things are far from perfect at keeping bots out, and just plain images with text on them would probably be even less "secure" than that. Remember all the spambots that kept registering on the old forum? That's how the registration worked there.
I feel like it would be more trouble than it's worth to install something like that, anyway, especially when I don't even know if I'm going to keep guest posting enabled.
Also, there is a tiny bit more to the antibot system than just a plain text math question, but I'm not going to explain what it is because that might ruin it.

i'm pretty sure certain bots *can* pick up on certain symbols in images, otherwise they wouldn't have to mangle the numbers and letters up so much that most humans couldn't read them, while they can seemingly easily bypass ones with no effects on them.
that's another thing, i can't read them half the time.
