Re: New contest ideas?

let's not do a contest with Enter the Dragonfly, we already have one six-month to year-long contest in the works lolololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololol

get it, because of the loading times?!

eh, i may not do the game design one personally, but not everybody on the site has to participate in every single one. O_o there sure seem to be enough participants lately i've noticed, as Gek's quote shows.

I think a art contest with a theme could be fun.

Re: New contest ideas?

I'm standing idly with my game, and the worst of all is that i can't do anything about it just because of missing resources! That's frustrating me, and it starts to bring off very disturbing vibes... I think i need to take a rest from it and think what to do next...

Re: New contest ideas?

Some good ideas here.

What would you guys think of doing a collaborative game project of some kind? That way it wouldn't be be competition, and everyone could get some experience in whatever areas they're interested in for their own games.

I'm up for any kind of collaboration. Just as long as I don't need my microphone, since mine doesn't work anymore :x

Re: New contest ideas?

I will definitely join if there are people interested in it. and I have even working mic! big_smile but I guess mic won't be needed, maybe we could finally use up spyrochat somehow ^.^ I think the first problem would be to choose an engine.

Re: New contest ideas?

I'm using 001Engine for RPG games because you don't need to write scripts. Just drag&drop&connect thing.

Re: New contest ideas?

Count me in on this big_smile

If it's something 2-dimensional, I suggest using GameMaker, as it is fairly easy to work with, and is focused on 2D.
It can export to a number of different platforms, including html5, windows, mac os x, ubuntu and android. The program itself only supports windows, though(there is an older version of it is for mac), and most of those exports cost quite a bit to unlock. I have all of them, but have only ever tested the windows, html5 and android export, as those are the platforms I have devices for.

Otherwise, it would be a nice excuse for me to look at Unity again. Even the free version does seem to have quite a bit of possibilities for 3d, compared to the current free version of GameMaker, which severely limits your number of resources.

Re: New contest ideas?

I can do both 3d models(low poly) and 2d graphics, and sound to some small extent, but not music. Music and sound has always been my weak spot in game jams, with most of my games being mute neutral

Maybe these last posts should be taken into a new topic of their own.

Re: New contest ideas?

Good :3 everyone I knew did only high polys. I tried making a low poly spyro in model creator big_smile but it lacked features I wanted so it was too slow, so I wanted to make myself my own model creator but didn't finish it : d yet.

Same for me for the sound ^.^' I never did much of it either. (just very simple manipulations in audacity) I tried making some models in blender, but it didn't catch me. I do some 2D graphics in gimp - some simple textures, I sometimes go out for a walk and take pictures, edit it in gimp to make it tileable and maybe some other modifications to make it look more ... cartoonish or what word should there be. I can't do pixel art D: But I can do some vector graphics in inkscape, not that experienced though. Programming in C++ and I can still remember some gamemaker programming too ^.^ As for unity, I only installed it once and that was it. ^.^'

I think we have enough people to make a game, we should only get it together somehow. (and figure out the sound, ISLS said he did something with sound, so maybe he could help a bit too)

Maybe also some story writing and voice acting should be considered.

Re: New contest ideas?

Yeah... I use Blender... it has a few issues(like relying very much on keyboard shortcuts and containing so many things that you probably don't need, resulting in a somewhat overwhelming interface), but it's generally nice to work with when you know how.

I downloaded Unity a couple of times, both of them making very incomplete Spyro character gameplay. How to make the actual game and structure(moving between levels and other systems), I have no idea how to do in Unity. In GameMaker on the other hand, I know those things very well.

Maybe... I dunno. Those graphics don't really appeal to me, though.

Re: New contest ideas?

Oh, i'm just looking for someone to make sprites of a few Spyro characters for me, or at least to teach me how to do it by myself...

Oh, I see...
Well, I'm not sure how much help this is, but here's an image showing the process of how I made a moneybags sprite and scaled it down to two different sizes, just now.
moneybags_strip11.png
The image you posted has a slightly strange combination of graphics styles, with a rough sort of semi-realistic(not pixel art) background tiles, pixel art character and an advanced-ish glowing swirl effect, so I'm not sure exactly what style you're thinking about tongue

...

About the possible collaborative game project... I'm assuming what we have in mind is a typical Spyro game of some sort, most likely classic Spyro?(that's my impression of the general forum opinion on which games are the best)
I'm also thinking that it would be nice if we made a level editor for whatever type of game this is going to be, so that anyone of us could use it without having to know/be able to use/have whatever game making engine we end up with. For example, if we use html5/javascript or have this as the export target, we could have the level editor hosted on a webpage somewhere, and it would be able to run the level you made, output the level data as a string of text symbols, or load a level from a string(pasted into a text field). As new objects get added to the game, the editor webpage would be updated.
This wouldn't be very practical for, say, a 3d game with polygonal terrain like in the ps1 games, but should be feasible for something relatively simple 2d. The level data format should be thoroughly thought through beforehand, though, to not cause problems with additions or changes and keeping some sort of backward compatibility for levels made with previous versions.
... Just an idea smile

Re: New contest ideas?

Simple 2D and HTML5/Javascript sounds great to me. Let's go with that.

Since it looks like enough people are interested, I'll work on a signup thing of some kind for positions and such.

Re: New contest ideas?

Ignore the glowing effect ;P I think that a sprite like this would work just fine. Bot in 4 directions, and everyone has to be animated
