Spyroforum Fan Game - deciding on the levels

This is going to need to be figured out very soon. I'm hoping to get some discussion going in here so we can make some final decisions. If you're involved in writing and level design, we especially need your input here.

We have some good ideas here; we just need to pick some and go with them. Keep in mind that we're starting with one homeworld and three levels. There may be more in the future if everyone wants to keep this going.

Okay then! Here were the homeworld proposed ideas:

- An Artisans themed homeworld

- A village surrounded with energy-poles

...And apparently that was it. I suggested a Gnorc Gnexus homeworld and a Dragon Shores level as an example, but that's all we have so far for homeworld suggestions.

Also, Sheep - What sizes would you prefer those sprites to be? I could take a shot at a couple smile

Anyways, well for the level themes how about like a mario on DS idea so a few levels inside 1 "zone" and each "zone" has its own theme?

A world with a dream-like atmosphere would be interesting. Do something that has a ethereal feel, and halfway through, just change it to a nightmarish setting.

A cybernetic world would be interesting as well. Have Spyro go through one terminal and come out another, kinda like a maze, but nothing too complicated.

Just getting some ideas around, see what you guys and gals think.

A world with a nightmare-ish, creepy atmosphere would be cool. It seems pretty un-Spyro-like, but it'd be a nice change from the happy stuff. Plus I'd love to make a creepy-sounding track for it tongue

I really want to see the Dream-like level be created, go from ethereal to nightmarish. An Artisan-like homeworld would be cool. How about a level that has a mystical forest setting?

Re: Spyroforum Fan Game - deciding on the levels

I would absolutely love a mystical forest setting! Those types of levels are always fun to play.

I also believe we'll be having the level changing from morning, to mid-day, to night. I'd especially love to see a forest at night level since, when done correctly, they can give off a creepy vibe.

Other level possibilities - Snow/ice themed level (which are usually popular). 'Larger than life' style level (think of the library level from Castle of Illusion on the MegaDrive/Genesis).

I imagine an eventual Artisan homeworld to mostly take place inside a castle, with a couple of small out-door areas.

Maybe those two(dream-like and forest) could be combined?
A dream-like/magical forest morphing into a nightmareish one, with the trees getting scary faces and reaching limbs, fodder creatures becoming distorted and dangerous, glowing eyes in the dark etc.

A snow level was also mentioned in the other thread, and

I've been talking with masterscorp, and they came up with a few new level ideas:

An evillooking electricity level
A dark tower level
A nice evening carnival like level with lots of lights.

Have we decided on a homeworld theme yet?

What about a snowy evening carnival:

I really like the carnival picture Sheep smile
I like the mystical forest idea. I also like the desert/canyon one we have now, maybe there could also be some underground cave, or make a separate cave level :3 with crystals.

Yes, crystal caves! smile
I have a hard time picking my top three favorites, but once we have three levels and the game engine done, it shouldn't be very difficult to add more levels.

As for the homeword, Artisians like world seems the most appealing to me.

Also another idea for a level could be a haunted castle with some traps and secret chambers :3

Re: Spyroforum Fan Game - deciding on the levels

I'm not sure if this was thought of yet, but I think a day/night cycle would be cool to implement in the homeworld. You could go to a level when it's day time, and you come back to the homeworld at night.

Re: Spyroforum Fan Game - deciding on the levels

Yes, I've already discussed that with Sheep. smile

The plan is to have a level during the day, the evening and night. Each time you return, the homeworld will reflect that new time, so that the finale takes place during the night.

For future reference, what format would you guys like for the music? mp3? wav? maybe some of that hot .ogg action?

Re: Spyroforum Fan Game - deciding on the levels

Probably not wav, since that would be like having huge .bmp images?
I think we need both an .ogg and an .mp3 version for each track, and for all other sound files, because of the inconsistencies across the browsers. Those are the formats I ended up with for the sound effects, at least.

Re: Spyroforum Fan Game - deciding on the levels

I plan to make a track, maybe just a title screen one, once I have all of my samples together. I could make one now, but I prefer to have everything present, even if I'm not going to use it.
