Jared Pullen, lead artist of ANB and TEN, joined DeviantArt recently and has started posting content and answering fan questions on the LoS trilogy.

A lot of interesting details has been revealed from Jared Pullen, some fans asked him by PM, or in the Status Posts, or comments in his art.

The Convexity Breath we know is actually called "Aether", which was never named in-game but mentioned in the game's coding.
Aether is the true element of the Purple Dragon. There are two types of it: Light and Dark.
Regular, or Light, Aether is the powerful breath type Purple Dragons use when in critical times. It's the same kind of Aether Spyro used to defeat Cynder and restore her back to her normal form.
Dark Aether is the result of when the element itself is tainted, or its wielder, a Purple Dragon, is corrupted. The power, in turn, will try to control the corrupted Purple Dragon, much like what happened to Spyro near the end of TEN. It has power of an atom smasher; it dismantles a target at the atomic level, literally "unmaking" it.
The Malefor we saw is actually him in his Dark Form: Dark Malefor. He had abandoned his true calling and embraced the darkness of the Aether element, but he didn't let it control him like it did with Dark Spyro near the end of TEN. His reptilian pupils are evidence of Malefor having full control over Dark Aether, compared to Dark Spyro and Dark Cynder's vacant white eyes. His distorted voice is also a result of him being corrupted by Dark Aether.
According to Jared Pullen, in response to Cynder's return to the Dragon Temple, the four remaining Guardians were intended to have a debate over Cynder's return to Dragonkind. Cyril was the most vocal against the decision, and Ignitus strongly supported Cynder's re-inclusion as he felt he had failed Cynder on levels the other Guardians could not imagine. His guilt, coupled with his understanding of failure prompted him to reach out to Cynder in this way. Terrador seconded the notion, trusting in Ignitus' judgement and out of respect for his close ally. Volteer endlessly debated the pros and cons of Cynder's return until Cyril finally grew tired of all the conjecture and relented!
Jared always imagined a final, intense duel between Spyro and Dark Malefor. Aether vs Dark Aether, in which their beams connected and one would push back the other. We got a taste of this at the close of DOTD, but Jared intended for it to have more drama and a lasting consequence for one of the Purple Dragons.

I always felt awkward about it. The whole Spyro going dark scene, and Malefor supposedly dying and all that... it just felt weird. Plus his voice was kinda cringey. Maybe because it was rushed and they didn't put their whole effort into building these scenes, I'll never know. I liked the mystery of "aether" too, how no one knew what it was really called, or how it worked. It just came natural to Spyro and I was ok with leaving it a mystery. Now that it's explained I feel a bit uneasy. Either way I still thoroughly enjoyed the games despite what I said and sorta wish there was more to the story, another game perhaps.

Shame they aren't making any more Legend of Spyro games, I would like to see a prequel showing Malefor when he was a young dragon.
