Various dialogue in the game makes light humor of the platform game genre, with references to such objects as Red Coins and Power Stars (of Super Mario 64), Spyro commenting about how easy it would be to defeat a boss, and Hunter's breaking the fourth wall by mentioning that if Spyro were dead, the player would be forced to return to a previous saved game.

In Red's lab there appeares a robot that is dressed like Mario.

Sgt. Byrd has presumably lost what flying skill he had in Year of the dragon, as he uses a jet-pack in this game.

OK, cool, I knew the first and last ones, but a robot dressed like Mario?! I never noticed that in Red's lab! I haven't played it in a while, though, so I'll go have a look.

It's the maitenence robot that he's referring to.

Another trivia is how Spyro refers to the usual style that he defeats bosses in the Spyro video games when confronting the Wolly Mammoth.
