people's opinions on the TLOS series

ok, i have been watching reviews of the spyro franchise in general recently and it always seem's to have the same outcome, everyone hates the legend of spyro, and i don't understand why, i know it's not like the old games but as the developers said its a completely different game, you can't exactly compare the originals to the TLOS series, so i just wondering what are your opinions on the TLOS series in general and even the spyro franchise.

do you like the TLOS series

Re: people's opinions on the TLOS series

eh... if you asked me a few years ago, i would have said "yes", but nowadays, i just can't really get into the TLOS games. there are a few reasons, i guess it's kind of hard to explain some of them, but these two reasons stick out at me:

1) the gameplay was way too repetitive, especially in ANB and TEN. just fighting the same few monkeys over and over...

2) my tastes have changed over the years. the games are just a little too "moody"/"dark" for me nowadays.

What do you think from a story perspective, because I hear many people say it's not a spyro game and should never be just because it isn't like the originals , all the gameplay problems aside ( I have to admit the gameplay wasn't the strong point) do you think it is a spyro game?

Re: people's opinions on the TLOS series

I would say yes, it is a Spyro game. Just not an original Spyro game. tongue

From a story perspective, I don't think the story was very strong, although it was certainly better than the gameplay. The story, to me, felt like every other hero's journey story ever - it didn't really bring anything new to the table, and I knew pretty much exactly what to expect from it. It came off to me as trying too hard to be "epic" and "dark" and for me it really only succeeded at the latter.

Now this isn't a bad thing by itself, necessarily, but if the story is going to be meh, I'm going to need some good characters. I know a lot of people loved the characters and got really invested in them, but that didn't happen for me. They felt either like typical caricatures with their one silly gimmick (the guardians, Sparx) or boring with not much personality (Spyro, Cynder). Not to mention the main villain just wasn't interesting, and his motivations made no sense.

Admittedly a lot of my dislike may be bias that I started with from the beginning. I was new to internet forums when ANB was just announced and waited for it with my friends with anticipation and high hopes. As much as I tried to like it, it was a let down when it turned out to be a reboot that erased the original world and characters that I loved so much. I wanted to be drawn into the world of Spyro and explore something new again, and LoS didn't do that for me. This is where most of the anger towards the series comes from, I think. It's more of an emotional reaction to the fact that the games weren't what the current fans at the time wanted. Just like all the hate Skylanders gets now from LoS and original fans alike.

I'm kind of indifferent now to the whole thing, but those were my feelings at the time. I'm sure you know this already but don't let the negative reaction from other people stop you from enjoying it. Some people might be pushy (I used to be) but you don't have to justify why you like the games to anyone.

it's interesting. i guess Stormy's right, it's kind of cliche, but i don't mind. i think my only problems with the story were:

Hidden text

1) we never saw Spyro's / Sparx's parents after the beginning of ANB

2) the game wasn't clear about whether they lived at the end of DOTD

yeah, i'd consider it a Spyro game. it's different from the originals, but Spyro's still the main character.

Re: people's opinions on the TLOS series

The thing is, when you were a big fan of the original games when you're younger, I think it makes it harder to enjoy the newer games for what they're worth since they're just so different to the older games. Same thing happened to me with the Need For Speed series.

That being said, the main reason I like TLoS is simply that it has a good vibe (not including TEN, that game just put me on tilt every time I played it). Each level had it's own unique feeling and good music to go along with it. It was relaxing in a way the original series wasn't. Everything else (story, characterization, etc.) I never really had any strong feelings either way.

Yeah, I wouldn't have had a problem with it at all if there had at least been something else interesting/not totally frustrating. Gameplay and characters both could have made up for this. The original games didn't have much of a story either, but it didn't matter because the gameplay, worlds, and music were the real draws for me. Another example is my favorite game of all time, Tales of Symphonia. A lot of people call the story cliche, but I loved the characters and their dynamic as a team so much that I just wanted to spend time with them and see what would happen to them.

Re: people's opinions on the TLOS series

The time I played it yes but the second time no. I didn't enjoy it at all. I do have respect for it though, it just not my generation of game. Still prefer it to Skylanders any day.
