Re: Flame vs. Charge Challenge Run
-Charging is banned even for shortcuts. It's only the head jerk that is allowed. The head-jerk, which I say in Ep 1 is allowed; just not to open Metal Chests or defeat metal enemies (since that defeats the point) does get me a few extra gems from one location that otherwise would be unobtainable...
What do you even mean by "head jerk"?

1. What percentage did you get?
2. In Misty Bog, I was able to get some help from the boars, and, by leaving the gems that the fan chests contain alone, and killing myself to make them respawn, and also by making the Gnorcs run into the fan chests' range, I was able to use the fan chests to kill all 6 of the Gnorcs that are on that bridge.
3. By coincidence, I got the thief in Stone Hill the same way that ManicX did.
4. Did you get onto that platform with the gems on it in Lofty Castle by charging into the wall, and getting hit by an arrow? Because you're only allowed to do that to save time.
5. I have no idea how either of us managed to get more than 223 gems in Magic Crafters. I myself must've accidentally killed an armoured enemy, and got its gem without realising.
6. I have no idea how we both missed 26 and 16 possible gems in Alpine Ridge.
7. I have no idea how you managed to get 462 gems in Dark Passage.
1. I got 89%. I might attempt to improve on it and get that other thief.
2. Yeah I used the boars optimally I believe. I did however not use the fan chests optimally, as I had never considered leaving the gem behind and dying to make it respawn.
3. hm I have yet to watch fully watch the rest of the vids. Curious to see how it's done.
4. I have not pressed the square button during my run entirely except for gnasty. I'm not sure what head jerk exactly is defined by either. With the platform I assume you mean the one you usually supercharge to, right?

6. hmm not sure which gems you mean. I'll check back on that. edit: nvm, spring chest death abuse. I'll have to restart the run though for it

Well, there's one metal chest with a green gem in it that, at least for me, the turtle's fireball goes straight through.

I checked and I think which chest you mean. Though I haven't been able to break that one either. however during my revisit to Dark Passage, I learned something interesting which put my gem count in the level to 473.

Re: Flame vs. Charge Challenge Run
By Head-Jerk I mean: When Spyro is gliding you can press the charge button and then the jump button again very quickly to make spyro jerk upwards slightly to get a bit of extra height. It's not a massive help, but it helped me one time.

Re: Flame vs. Charge Challenge Run
ah, personally I haven't used head jerk and probably won't. As it's still technically using charge. Especially not to do things I can't do without it.

Misty Boo!G
The most difficult and hated level that I have entered thus far, Misty Bog, will be the target of both challenges. One will hit the Dragon Jackpot, whilst the other will have to re-evaluate life choices. What a Mad World!

We finish what we started in Misty Bog, whilst also flying high in the Treetops. We get one step closer to escaping the awful Home World that is the Beast Makers, and it can't come quick enough.

Re: Flame vs. Charge Challenge Run
On the subject of no [Insert ability here] challenges, I think that I should post some things that I've discovered in the no glide challenge.
Here's a glitch that someone discovered in Beast Makers:
By doing this glitch, you can go to the tree stump with the gems and a key. If you jump into a certain part of the side of it, Spyro will roll down. By holding the X button, however, Spyro will bounce upwards when he rolls. By doing this, you can charge onto the tree stump, allowing you to get the gems and the key, which also allows you to open the locked chest.
In Terrace Village, go past the armoured Gnorc after the first dragon. Line yourself up against the wall at a certain angle, facing away from the Gnorc. When it attacks you, charge, jump, and get hit, all with good timing. Spyro should be launched into the air. With enough height, forward momentum, and luck, Spyro will land on the higher platform. Get the gems, jump and charge down to another platform, get the gems there, and jump and charge back across. Get some more gems, and flame the fireworks. Go to the edge of the platform that has a chunk missing from it, and turn right. Charge-jump over the gap, jump up at the very edge of the platform, charge down, and with yet more luck, it's possible to land on the platform with the gems from the banded chest. Get the gems, and then drop down and get the gems from the other banded chest.
In Lofty Castle, by standing in front of the wall where the pool is, letting the enemies attack you, and charge-jumping into the wall just before you get hit, Spyro will be launched into the air, and it's possible to land on the blue platform with gems on it. By flaming, and then immediately charge-jumping, Spyro will flame at an upwards angle. By doing this, it's possible to kill the balloon Gnorc next to the platform with a caged fairy and two fan chests. Go onto the bridge after the first dragon, turn around, and jump and charge onto a wall. Now, you probably know that Spyro does an odd animation when you hold the X button while charging up a slope. This wall has a short slope on it. If you charge-jump up this slope, and jump up at the edge of it with perfect timing, said jump should be abnormally high, and high enough to allow Spyro to charge over onto the other wall that's just across. From here, charge to the edge of the wall, jump up, charge, and with luck, it's possible to make it over to the balcony of the castle, where there's gems and enemies.
The damage boost and the jump to the platform where the banded chest was in Terrace Village are very difficult, and I think that the latter might only be possible on PAL. The second and third jumps that I described in Lofty Castle are even more difficult, and, again, I think that the latter might only be possible on PAL.

Re: Flame vs. Charge Challenge Run
Some interesting stuff. Particularly that video. I never saw if anyone beat RJWaters at his No Glide challenge, but it appears that it is indeed possible.
I may not be able to post a new episode for a couple of weeks and I'm currently rendering the Spyro 2 Race I did some time back. Each 10 minutes of footage is taking 2 hours to render, so it's going to take some time to do .

Those are the only 3 levels that I beat him on. I got 52 more gems in Beast Makers, 70 more gems in Terrace Village, and 78 more gems in Lofty Castle, which means that I beat him by exactly 200 gems.
Edit: I've also managed to get 100 more gems in Jacques by doing what was done in the first clip in this video:

Re: Flame vs. Charge Challenge Run
Hmm I'm intrigued by the Jaques thing. I thought he had a requirment to be hit exactly three times; but I guess it's just once as long as you can reach him.

Re: Flame vs. Charge Challenge Run
After several hours of trying, I managed to make an insanely difficult glide in Twilight Harbour, which allowed me to get 84 more gems. It involves gliding from the top of the supercharge ramp, doing a wall glide on a wall that you approach head-on, and have to turn almost 90 degrees to avoid being knocked down by it, and getting enough height to avoid being shot by the Gnorc commando. Don't try it. Just don't.

I actually tried doing that yesterday, but after the blind turn that you have to make, the sides of the mountains are too vertical.
I'm also certain that there's nothing else that I can do on the no flame challenge.
In the flight levels, Sparx is actually still there, but you just can't see him. If you land, and then charge into the water, you can actually jump out of it. However, you can only jump out of the water the first 3 times. I abused this to get all of the chests in Wild Flight. You can also get all of the chests in Sunny Flight and Icy Flight, as well.
And, without saying too much, I definitely know how to use the supercharge...
By the way, you also mean no charge, not no flame.
Edit: Oh, for crying out loud. I made exactly the same mistake.

Re: Flame vs. Charge Challenge Run
Sorry to anyone following this thread for the wait for my next episode. It will be up this week hopefully. I've just been so busy editing the Spyro 2 Race, with a Spyro 3 Race being planned for this weekend.
So in the meantime, here is the Spyro 2 Race should you need some filler while you wait.

EPISODE 15: HEAVY METAL

The Charging Only Challenge must clear out the Treetops, whilst the Flame Only challenge takes on the ACE OF SPYROS: METALHEAD!
==============================================
Which is more valuable to Spyro in the first Spyro game?
Flaming or Charging?
This will be a challenge run by Manic, to see what % he can get without charging vs. without flaming.

My results differed slightly to yours. Unfortunately I got a job in Vietnam and didn't have time to finish my series. All my files are on my desktop in England. It will maybe about 6-7 months before I will prolly have the ability to finish my series sadly. Sorry to hear you was waiting...

Re: Flame vs. Charge Challenge Run
Had to recover a lot of missing files, but this series will be finished. Will just need to explain some inconsistencies due to missing footage.
But my score will at least be completed. This is Episode 29. I'm trying to tie up all the loose ends by Episode 30. Although I have had hours and hours of nightmare piecing together.
All because I was too lazy to organise my files correctly.
