How did you get into the franchise?

Today I posted a video explaining my personal history with the Spyro series. I'd love to read some of your stories too.

Re: How did you get into the franchise?

i don't remember how i got into Spyro, so i asked my mom. my mom doesn't remember either. she *thinks* Spyro just looked like an age-appropriate game (i was... either 4 or 5), so they just got me one of the games. i'm ALMOST certain my first game was Spyro 2, but i'm not 100% sure.

i played the games (1-4?) for several years, got away from them for a few, but got back into them in 2007 thanks to a bunch of Spyro YouTubers (yearofthe, RedDevilDazzy2007, etc). if i remember correctly, that's when i got AHT and the first two TLOS games. DOTD was released in 2008 of course, i............ stopped buying games after Skylanders started, and here i've been ever since! smile very excited about the reignited trilogy, definitely planning to get them if they're released on something i actually own.

Re: How did you get into the franchise?

I had Season of Flame on GBA when I was a kid. It was one of my favorite games. Sometime during 2012 I decided to download Spyro the Dragon on the playstation store and I really enjoyed it, so I started playing through the whole series. 6 years later and I still play them occasionally.

Re: How did you get into the franchise?

I played the demo that was on Crash Warped (or was it CTR?) with the wayayayum buddhists and thought it was pretty neat back when I was pretty young, probably about 9 or 10. I then got Season of Flame for the GBA, but never finished it. I thought nothing of Spyro ever again until I met Stormy back in 2009 and I played through the OT and ETD with Stormy (tried AHT too but it was so awful I couldn't take more than a couple hours of it) Even now I don't know that I'd call myself a fan of the games, I don't love the mechanics tbh, but I like them enough and have a fond enough connection to them because of all you folks and all our homegrown illegal memes sparx that I'm pretty excited for the remaster

Re: How did you get into the franchise?

Childhood crushes are funny things. I remember having a short-lived crush on Ash from Pokemon when I was a bit older. tongue

So I played the first game when I was in second grade, at my friend's house. I didn't have a PlayStation at the time, and it was probably one of the first video games I ever played. The world and characters immediately grabbed my childhood imagination, and I still remember the levels we were playing at the time pretty clearly.

When my family unexpectedly received a PlayStation from a richer uncle who was upgrading to a PS2, I had to go rent the games from Blockbuster. The second game was the only one available, and I had to return it before I got very far. My dad played a little as well and helped me with the parts I was scared of (Sunny Beach, Hurricos). I later received Spyro 2 as a Christmas gift. We bought the first game at some point, and my dad actually got pretty into it, starting his own file and, to my amazement, beating Gnasty Gnorc before me or my brother.

Then one day my dad suddenly turned into a giant stick in the mud and decided video games were the worst thing ever and they were "corrupting my mind" or some *bleep*. I may or may not still be bitter about this almost 20 years later.

Re: How did you get into the franchise?

i started with Enter The Dragonfly, even completing it 100%. then came A Hero tails, then, The Legend Series and skylanders. I eventually downloaded the original trilogy on my p3, a version that was backwards compatible to ps1 and 2, and I played most of 1 and part of 2.

Re: How did you get into the franchise?

I was 5 years old in 2005/6, and my parents got me a whole bunch of PS2 and some PSX games from some yard sale in a box, mainly so that I could try video games for the first time. Now here's the thing, the games were supposed to be kid games, but for some reason GTA Vice City was in the box. (I don't blame my parents because these games were supposed to be kid games.) I for some reason or another popped the disk in, and played the game. A few hours later, my parents checked on me because they were hearing screaming noises. When they arrived I said "They scream when you hit them." They took the game away and said to pick a different game. Mom found Spyro the Dragon in the box and said something along the lines of "Let's try this game." She then popped in the disk and I played the game, I loved the Spyro series ever since. So much so that she got me all 5 original series console Spyro games and Eternal Night, and some of the merch like a Spyro plush that I still own.

Re: How did you get into the franchise?

It was 1998.  I was 12 years old (32 now).  I was staying at a friends house.  He had a Playstation.  He didn't have a lot of games, but I was still on the SNES so anything he had was gold compared to what I had.  I played a demo disc with Spyro on it.  It was Interactive Sampler Volume 8, which I hear is a common disc among PSX fans (I think it was distributed during the peak of that console generation).  I had heard or seen commercials with Spyro before, but never actually played the game.  My first experience playing the game, I fell in love with the art style, the ability to move freely, the animation of enemies, the cuteness of Spyro.  All of it was amazing.  I played it religiously for 12 hour straight, JUST THE DEMO.  I was obsessed.

(not my video)

By the way, if you watch the video, you'll notice some dragon freeing dialogue is different from the release version.  It's very interesting.

I got a Playstation for my 13th birthday in 1999.  The games I got with it were Crash: Warped, A Bug's Life, and Nascar '99.  I had extra birthday money so my parents took me to the store and I bought the only thing I wanted.

s-l300.jpg

This game wouldn't leave the disc tray many weeks.  To this day I've probably played Spyro the Dragon to its 120% completion 50 times.  I'm ready for #51.

This cemented me as a Spyro fan for life, and I've never looked back.  Some Spyro games have been better than others, some have been disappointing.  But I will never not like Spyro.

Speaking of the crushes, reminds me of the good old days when people were falling in love with Cynder cynder We even have that inside joke for it.

You have always been more of a Crash fan if I remember sparx I used to be into Crash games more too when I was younger, my brother was more into Spyro games. Then, around the time of TLOS, our likes changed and I liked Spyro more and my brother liked Crash more. And this forum also helped me liking it more.

I remember my dad being against games too tongue He would never let us play more than 1 hour and always complained how bad or useless the games are. But he luckily gave us the freedom to decide for ourselves... mostly.

I just imagined this in colors and found the situation more funny than I probably should x)

I noticed this too when I played the full game later after playing the demo. It sounded a bit strange to me after I got used to the old dialogs.

Anyway, as for me, we got playstation from grandmother where I played with brothers a lot before as a kid, mostly the Crash games, but there was also the Spyro demo I enjoyed. We had tons of demos by the way! We even had the official thing for holdiong many cds with playstation logo. Too bad it, and all the cds inside, got lost somewhere and we never found it again sad I remebmer playing the demo of Spyro 1 before I went to elementary school. I was trying to open the dragon head somehow, because I could see the portal there. Also in the Dark Hollow, there are the fireplaces you can lit, I always put Spyro's tail in it x) like a flaming tail, lol. And I liked burning the flowers in the artisans world. Later I got Spyro 2 and 3 and much later I got a copy of Spyro 1 from a friend. I only played heroe's tail at a friend, and then I tried Enter the Dragonfly, which I never finished. I remember meeting that friends thanks to the playstation games, because except me and him, literaly noone was playing playstation games at school. Everyone was playing just computer games. I guess playstation was not that popular here. Then, after a longer time of a gap, I found TLOS games in the stores and got into them a lot. Strangely, I didn't play the first TLOS game until about a year ago. Except some of the mc donalds games, I didn't play anything else. Just replayed the games I had a few times, and attended some of the forum contests. Now I can't wait for the remaster and hope they will release it for PC just like Crash smile

i always thought you had to flame those fireplaces. you know, like in Breeze Harbor in Spyro 2. it took me years to realize they were just for show and didn't affect the gameplay in any way tongue

i also thought you would get a skill point for flaming all the flowers/grass/etc in Spyro 1, like in the later games, but it didn't take nearly as long for me to figure out that wasn't the case.

Yeah but even then I wasn't like a die hard crash fan (except CTR which is still my favorite racing game)

Re: How did you get into the franchise?

My cousins got me introduced to Spyro when I was about 5, I didn’t get a big chance to play it though, I watched my oldest play it a lot, so he can teach me to play it, and I loved it, and 4 months later, I got PS1, I didn’t get Spyro till Xmas

Re: How did you get into the franchise?

Hi, I am new to this forum, and I want to share my experience.

When I was 8 years old, I would play the demo of Spyro on the Crash Bandicoot disc. Spyro hadn't been released yet (I don't think). But, I would come home from school and play the demo game over and over. At the time, there really weren't very many kid friendly games on the Playstation, so Crash and Spyro were all I got. I eventually received Spyro the Dragon for my birthday, and it changed my life. Mostly, there was something that felt very safe to me while playing the games. I can't quite put my finger on it, but it was a haven for me amidst the troubles of real life. I remember that I used to have dreams of flying because of Spyro, and I remember making up Spyro related games to play with my friends during school recess.

Now, more than 20 years later, I am playing the original Spyro games with my daughter who is 5. She immediately fell in love, and I got her a Spyro stuffed animal that she takes with her everywhere!

Well... to be honest, the music always speaks to me; hence why I loved this series since I can remember. I produce music myself, mostly only VGM.
