Finally got some Sheila! Winter Tundra and some more YoD!

... Where the heck are peeps gettin' their images from? I'm followin' the twitter, but nothing new's been posted.
Oh well. roll

Anyhoo, looks like we've finally gotten our first look at Sheila! Yeah, I remember there was a bit of controversy a while back when we caught a small glimpse of the character. And welp, here she is in all her glory!

... Now I will say that I'm not overly crazy for the hair? But I can get used to it.
Now that I've actually seen her -- the full picture and not 1/3rd of her like from before -- I actually DO like what they've done with her.
Granted, I guess we all kind of knew that she'd be going through some sort of redesign, so that knowledge there probably helped decrease the shock value, for lack of any better words?

But yeah, I do like the way she looks -- she sort of has this... Irwin-ish feel to her now.

In other news : Sheila's not the only thing that's gotten teased : we got some Winter Tundra, Magma Cone, Sunny Villa and Cloud Spires!

She looks cute! I'm with you on the hair, but yeah, I'm sure I'll get used to it too.

Re: Finally got some Sheila! Winter Tundra and some more YoD!

I love her.  I'm not crazy about the hair either, but I still think she looks amazing remastered.  She also looks less stout than she did in the originals.  Our girl Sheila's been workin' out!

Back when this game came out, I had this weird fascination with kangaroos.  I thought they were the coolest animal ever, still do.  (Hippo is #2)  When I found out there was a playable kangaroo character in Year of the Dragon, I couldn't believe it.  I was so excited, and she has always been my favorite of the Forgotten Worlds characters.  I loved her controls, her abilities, her australian blunt attitude, her level's music.  UGH!  She's amazing.

Re: Finally got some Sheila! Winter Tundra and some more YoD!

i can't objectively complain. that style does seem fitting to Sheila's character/personality.

i just... man. i'm not a fan of this. i've had the same picture of Sheila in my head ever since i first played Spyro 3, and now she just... man. is it just me? do i have too much personal attachment to these characters? i feel like i shouldn't care this much about all these very small, minute changes (hair, hats, etc), but i do anyway.

Re: Finally got some Sheila! Winter Tundra and some more YoD!

Yeah so, I understand people's issue with features of remastered characters.  Thank god they got Spyro perfect really.  I think that there are some valleys of visual comprehension that is missing between the polygons of PS1 Spyro characters, and their remastered counterparts.  In some cases, people criticize the design choice, but more often it seems that the visuals of the old models was left to more interpretation than we thought.  I think it's a lot harder than people think.  When we saw the liberties they made with the elder dragons, we were impressed with how extravagant some of the characters were, especially some of them who only spoke for a few seconds!  They took liberties with Sheila too, and to many people, it missed the mark.  It makes me very afraid of Elora's eventual reveal.  It wouldn't surprised me if the reason we haven't seen TfB's design of Elora is because they are super nervous about what they have for her and are worried people will rage.  There are a lot of Elora fans out there.  You mess up Elora, and that's a deal-breaker for some.  And I can understand that even more than I understand the download fiasco.

Personally, I would like a little more animation in her movement.  When she gets hit, she doesn't react that much.  It would be nice to see her flinch a little.  As for the hair, yeah it's weird.  I wish we could see the cutscenes with her, I think the spunkiness of her personality will make the hair not a big deal.

About the hourglass stuff.  I get that people don't like stereotype character models in games.  Having a slender-looking female character comes off more attractive instead of relatable.  But do you guys think Sheila's design is stereotypical?  I'm trying to understand how people see it in her.  Yeah she's less pear-shaped, but it's not like she's an anorexic super-model.  What do you guys think?

I actually like her design. Guess I'm in the minority.

i was too busy looking at the hair to even notice. it seems like they ... made her have a slightly more "stereotypically attractive" figure? but not in such a way that i'm sitting here prudishly vomiting over it or something. it's... i dunno, i'm just kind of indifferent to that, honestly, though i fear what the internet is going to do to her.

oh, and i am taking into account the PS1's polygons, don't worry, i understand that some of the characters were really vague by modern standards. (i think of some of the enemies they showed in Spyro 1 -- not at all how i imagined them, but it wouldn't really be fair to judge those since those are more up to interpretation.)

Re: Finally got some Sheila! Winter Tundra and some more YoD!

There's no point in being afraid of what people will do to her in terms of fandom art and memes.  It's inevitable.  And honestly, Elora and Bianca are going to get the most attention in that direction anyway.  It's just an internet fandom thing no one can avoid.

I urge everyone to take a deep breathe when they finally reveal Elora and Bianca.  I sincerely think *bleep* is going to fly.  I think I might just avoid the Spyro-verses that week.

Re: Finally got some Sheila! Winter Tundra and some more YoD!

I saw this on the Spyro subreddit, they are edits of the Sheila reveal picture, illustrating what she could look like if they decided to remove the hair and brighten her eyes.

This is the original:

This is an edit by https://www.reddit.com/user/c00lskeleton95 in an attempt to make the hair less obtrusive in color, and brighten her eyes.

I think she's a cutie no matter what.  But as I looked at the hairless picture, I can't help but think if I was pondering the same thing the TfB character designers were thinking.  Something about her is missing.  In her face it's like there is a feature missing, even though the original she has a pretty boring head.  I'm sure it's not because I have already gotten used to the new hair.  I think an artist at some point decided to give her hair in order to keep her basic expression look lifeless.

Or maybe I'm crazy, idk.

What do you guys think?

Re: Finally got some Sheila! Winter Tundra and some more YoD!

hm... agreed. she was fine being bald in the original game, but with the redesign, it looks like something is missing. like i don't mind, it's just... it seems like something is missing. but the question for me is, why? if her design felt complete before, why not now? associations with other things? (ie "women with full eyelashes and large eyebrows usually have a lot of hair", etc) ........................... or perhaps, does my mind register this version of Sheila as an entirely different person?

Oh, well... I like her outfit, that's actually a good idea, but I don't like her weird overhumanized body shape <.< and the hair.. I don't want to sound too negative, the design itself is good, it just seems to me it is a different character. Like, if it was her mother or friend or sister, that would be totally awesome, but I just don't see the Sheila I remember there.

No it just means you're a sexist bigot.

But seriously, I think the barrier of detail in the PS1 era was low for this kind of nitpick, so it was never a problem.  Although at the time, graphics had never been better for consoles.  This actually a pretty good example of the uncanny valley, the artistic phenomenon that happens when you begin to try to make things more realistic, it becomes creepier and less welcoming.
