Re: favourite character

My favorite is Hunter. He is pretty cool, even though he is way to enthusiastic.

Re: favourite character

I've got thousands, well not literally of course. Definately Spyro, Hunter, Ember, Red ('cos he's an evil guy), Bianca, Flame (well he's O.k. I guess), well nearly all the good guys really, Cynder and Red are the only evil people I like. I'm that much of a Spyro fan. smile

Re: favourite character

I think we probably have like 10 of these threads now, but whatever.

My favorite character is Spyro. (Oooh, how original.)

Re: favourite character

The ever so "original" character thread.

Oh well...

Characters that I like as a whole:

-Spyro (A New Beginning)
DUH! It's hard to like a serie when you hate the main character. Anyway... Spyro is definitively a decent character. As he received a major overhaul in A New Beginning, personality-wise, I decided to make them separate characters (although they're really, until stated otherwise in-canon, the same character).

Spyro's personality and background story in A New Beginning is pulled off extremely well. His base personality remain the same: he's the same heroic purple dragon with an oversized ego and who has a definite lack of motivation when it comes to following safety rules. The main change here is that he's no longer one-dimensional ; the fact that he is a little dragon hatchling is stressed enough in the game and he react true to his age, his heroic and cocky attitude quick to deflate the second he end up running into humongous monsters several times his size. True to his heroic personality, he will stand up to his fear and eventually conquer it however. He also tend to take things much more seriously as a whole, not taking the help of others as granted and seems to value the people around him a lot more than his oldschool self which cause him to come off, as a whole, much MUCH less selfish than in other games. In fact, compared to the almost anti-hero old-school Spyro, the new Spyro actually come off as a believable lead character.

-Spyro (oldschool)
The original Spyro is, considering, very original and uncommon as a main character... although I prefer the new version.

Spyro is, frankly, not much of a hero when it comes to personality. He's a bully, has a ego the size of the universe, take the help of others as granted, show little to no regard to the safety of his friends, and as a general rule doesn't care about the fate of the world, only wanting to beat up the bad guys, who he doesn't take seriously at all. He's the ultimate portrayal of the hypocritical corrupt hero, totally corrupted and twisted by his popularity and fame and whose constant victories only keep making him worse.

Deep down, he has a few heroic traits left... but mostly, Spyro has more of the makings of a fallen hero than anything else and that's maybe what make him so original and interesting: the fact that, when one think about it, he's every bit as selfish as the villains, only the side on which he fight making him better.

-Sparx (A New Beginning)
Sparx, always the understudy...

Sparx serve as the Navi-like adviser in the new game and is the main source of humor for the whole game. While Spyro retained his base personality, this new version of Sparx is radically different.

Where the old one was mostly quiet, shy, and overall submissive, the new Sparx is energic, loud, active, and unafraid to speak out loud. This version of Sparx feels a lot more like an actual character and less like an extension of Spyro, actually acting on his own and contradicting the purple dragon. Like Spyro, Sparx was made less one-dimensional as well... in this case, while he may talk big, Sparx is everybit, if not more afraid than Spyro is and although he might seem like a bit of a coward at times, he does end up standing up to his fears as well... although one might think that deep down, he really doesn't have much of a choice considering.

-Ember (A Hero's Tail)
A wasted character, most definitely.

For all of the background story and hyped-up importance she is given, she only get herself two scenes. TWO. That is a real shame. Yet, in two scenes, she manage to pull off more personality and charm than most Spyro characters manage to in the space of multiple games. Frankly, I was disappointed that she didn't appear more often.

Note that due to plotholes and to Shadow Legacy sucking as a whole, I separated her A Hero's Tail and Shadow Legacy versions.

-Gnasty Gnorc (Spyro the Dragon, A Hero's Tail)
A villain that doesn't get enough credit, frankly.

The gigantic leader of the Gnorcs, Gnasty Gnorc's origins are pretty much unexplained... but his motives sure are simple! Wherever most Spyro villains act out of pure evilness and are evil just because, Gnasty Gnorc come off as a strangely well-developed villain despite the few amount of scenes that involve him. Gnasty Gnorc isn't led by pure evil intent and world domination doesn't interest him. What lead him is his sheer hatred of the dragons, who banished him and then judged him based on his appearance. This jealousy and resentment toward all dragons eventually developed into this powerful hatred that led him to lead the Gnorcs against dragonkind. Once, in an attempt to get revenge on a humiliating documentary the dragpons made, then the second time, in an attempt to have revenge at Spyro, the one who made a fool out of him the first time.

Both attempts end up, obviously, in failure. I am one of those who believe that Gnasty Gnorc doesn't get enough credit and that he is definitely neither a lousy villain nor stupid. I mean... he's one of the only villains whose motives are actually explained and well, he is a skilled magician and managed to turn the savage, primitive Gnorcs hordes into an organized army that was stable enough for him to pull off two invasions plans. That must count for something, right?

-Sergeant Byrd (lots of Spyro games)
The penguin with the jetpack!

Yes, he's not very deep nor serious... but the military penguin sure has attitude and nice lines! One of the better side-characters without a doubt. Although his GBA selves are fairly bad, his console selves are all pretty good, excuding much personality. His gameplay parts are also fairly good as a bonus.

...

Well, that's all. Can't really think of an order as I like them more or less on an equal level.

Re: favourite character

*claps for Zerodius' post* Excellent post old scout, 'couldn't agree with you more on those points. Now I must say that imo that I like all the playable extra chars. in YotD because of their overall characteristics:

Sheila - Because she comes off as a butt kickin' kangaroo who, when not beating up baddies, serves somewhat like a mother to her friends the Three Billy Goats who are constantly getting into trouble that she, as always has to get them out of. Of course she gets annoyed somewhat at thier antics, but she really wouldn't have it either way.

Bentley - Sort of the same as Shiela but he has to deal with his little brother Bartholomew who is also prone to getting into trouble. Bentley is of course a gentle giant and rarely shows any irritation to his brother or anyone else for that matter; with the exception of Moneybags of course. He's the kind of guy who'll do anything for his friends and little brother basically yet he has a very funny sense of humor as shown various times in the game.

Sgt. James Byrd - A militiariastic penguin raised by hummingbirds and taught to fly. Very cool since he's the only playable character that has free flying reign all the time where as Spyro has to be in a special boss battle (like with Ripto) or in a speedway to fly anywhere he wants. He is leader of a whole regiment of military trained hummingbirds which is a added plus imo and shows very good leadership skills.

Agent Nine - A hyperactive space monkey with a ray gun, always eager to shoot the baddies as if it were all a game to him. Hmmm, I wonder what would happen if he met Stewie Griffen...lol. He's got to be my fav, of the four since his eccentric and enthusiastic personality reminds me of me in a way, lol. Too bad he doesn't  has his own jetpack so he can wreak havoc in the skies too.  big_smile Anything can happen with this guy around!

That's all I have to say on my part. Later guys!

Re: favourite character

If you're just talking about Year of the Dragon, my fave charrie would EASILY be Agent 9. I mean, who wouldn't love a hyperactive monkey and come forth with so much wit in the varying levels that he was placed in? It's a shame that portrayal didn't get carried on in the GBA games - that would have been so cool.

Someone mentioned Sergeant Byrd getting some great portrayal down the line too. That can be agreed upon, but why did he need a jetpack in A Hero's Tail when he could fly well without in Year of the Dragon?
