I think ghosts or maybe scary caves would work, but not any real horror. Just small things that might make you jump a little. Like some of the stuff in Sonic Adventure 2 Battle or Super Mario 64, it didn't have anything truly terrifying but it had a few spooky levels and enemies.

Bring back the bushes from Misty Bog and Fracture Hills.  Those things still give me nightmares.
