New Spyro fangame being developed in Unity following the originals
Hey everybody! I'm finally going to post about this game since it's been going slow recently. The initial concept of this is probably not going to sound very appealing, but I'm working to make it as appealing as I actually can with the limited resources I have. So without further ado, I'll show off:
(Work in progress art and... well, everything most likely!)
Spyro: Ripto's Return is a fan game I have been working on technically for two years already, albeit slowly. The main focus of the design of this game was to try to recreate the feel of Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly properly and make it seem like a properly made game. I started the initial planning of the game back in 2013 and started real work on gameplay in Summer of 2014. During that time, I created a little tech demo as I could call it that demonstrates what the game could be like(it's extremely unpolished and buggy, but it still works.) I spent quite a while planning the game out and thinking of how I wanted it to happen. In the end, I planned out all the levels and their layouts, homeworlds, NPC species, Fodder, Enemies, and challenges for each level, and I even have an entire script written out for the game. It's possible that later on I might post more info about the game itself and the levels, but for now I won't spoil too much! Expect more info later on as I release things about the game. I'll be posting videos of the game's features periodically and will be updating the thread once new ones have been posted, so be sure to check in every so often to see new things! Feel free to ask any questions about the game and I will be happy to answer them without revealing too much.
As for the tech demo I mentioned, you may download it below. The demo was completed in summer of 2014, so it's quite outdated from the actual game). A little info about this demo: As I stated, it was done during summer of 2014. Technically it was done before summer, but finished summer. I worked on it while in school and as a result, only worked mostly on weekends. The level it takes place in is a very early design of the first level of the game called Dragon Meadows. The demo uses placeholder animations that I did in about three hours for each animation. Spyro himself is wrongly textured in some parts since the model I used wasn't properly textured and his wings are only one-sided. The music is the unused track from Enter the Dragonfly for the level Enchanted Forest that was cut. And a brief warning before downloading: be sure your sound is turned down a bit when launching since the music and sound is a bit too high. After you launch, you can go into the pause menu and change the volume there. The game works with both Keyboard/Mouse and with a Controller(Xbox).
Download the tech demo here: [Mediafire]
The demo has a challenge attached to it and I might even make it a contest for everyone to try out. The demo has a timer that will count up when the game starts. The goal of the demo is to collect all 300 gems in the level and the timer will stop showing your time. I will probably be making this a contest in the thread eventually, so maybe everyone should practice up! Once I am ready to start the challenge, I'll be ranking to top three completion times in the demo and displaying the username of the people who did it in the thread/a new thread. Good luck when it starts!

I got all 300 gems in 8 minutes 30 seconds exactly. Looks good so far. Controls are responsive. I wonder what the game looks like now

8 minutes is pretty long! Once you find the locations, you should be able to get them all in under three minutes or so. As for the controls, the demo's are quite outdated. Charging is done very sloppily in the demo and the camera is a bit old as well. They have for sure been updated since then and eventually I'll post something of the current game to show it off.

I couldn't figure out how to get that purple gem on top of the white box until I figured out <ctrl> makes you hover

Ah, that's reasonable. The keyboard controls aren't my favorite, but they have to be made if it's on PC. A controller makes the game feel much better IMO.

New showcase video added! It's available in 60FPS so you can soak in the smoothness of the game! That video shows current progress as of July 4th.

Re: New Spyro fangame being developed in Unity following the originals
I have a idea for a level. You know the cut level Enchanted Forest in Spyro Enter the Dragonfly? How about you try to make the level and make Scottish Foxes like what was intended.
But you don't have to if you want.
Also is there going to be voice acting?
Its just a float you scaredy cat.

Re: New Spyro fangame being developed in Unity following the originals
I very much look forward to seeing this game, and have so many ideas to share.
One idea for Spyro 4: Enter the Dragonfly, is that the castle door that Spyro starts the game in front of could be a hub with portals to other worlds.
I mean, your doing an excellent job with Ripto's Return. I can't wait to get my hands on the final version, I appreciate your hard work. Your the only person I know who knows so much about Enter the Dragonfly and loves it dearly. It's one of my most favorite Spyro games ever as well as my first. I have the Gamecube version and think that if Universal had let the developers finish it, instead of rushing it, it surely would have been better than Spyro: Year of the Dragon. Keep up the good work, and if you don't mind, I'd like to help on the project by uploading my ideas. I've literally dreamed about stuff that I'd love to see in this game, because it just feels so unfinished.
Sorry about the wall of text. .

Another idea I've got, is that the dragonflies should come toward you early on in the game, and when you collect more of them, your breath abilities should go farther, and then later in the game the dragonflies should run away to add challenge. Most people hate how early in the game, the dragonflies run away from you, when your breath doesn't go far, so you have to chase them down.

I'll be making sure that the bubble breath in this game is as accurate as I can make it. Currently I'll be trying out direct impacts(It catches them when the bubble actually touches them). Most likely dragonflies will be slow and easier to catch from the start and get faster and more challenging as it goes on.

Re: New Spyro fangame being developed in Unity following the originals
What if there was a level buildup before the fight with Ripto? In my opinion I thought it was quite anti-climatic, but I'm not saying you have to. I'm sure you got alot of work on your hands.
Or a three part battle? Using that invinability powerup in the volcano level to dash across to another arena that Ripto teleports to, and then a bridge that crumbles before the final battle.
that would be so exciting.

All the ideas for the level order and boss fights are already thought out. I tried to introduce some cool mechanics in the final Ripto battle(There's technically two Ripto fights: one as the first boss, and the final one at the end of the game). I'm definitely going to try for an epic ending with it!

Might take a while before it gets a new update. I have moved in an apartment on my own and don't have a second monitor to develop properly. Once I get a second one again, I'll resume and hopefully everything will go smoothly!

That's a really good drawing! I can definitely see how that could fit into the Spyro universe. At this point, I don't really have any character designs made yet and it's a bit too early to be doing them as well. I think level sketches need to be made before designing characters so that they fit into the environment.

Thanks! As a Concept Artist/Game designer, I agree with you, levels first, then characters. I try to design my characters to have good design, to feel alive and expressive.
